    2. Lisa Marcum
    3. I need to see if anyone might know of any Marcums in Alabama around 1819 - 1830s? I am missing Anderson Marcum b. 1819 in Alabama and his father was b. in Virginia. Anderson only appears around 1850 in Indiana, but I can trace him back to 1839 to Gallatin Co. Ky when he married Ruth Swango. Other Surnames in this family are Swango, Whiteside, Webster, Fightmaster, Shaffer and Jump. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you, also his name might be William Anderson Marcum (Markham) but I am not positive. Thank you,                      Lisa Marcum

    3. Hello Rhoda... What a fascinating story! This must be how all those Marcums were kept separate! Yes, this is the same Leonard, married to Rosie Bell Sparks. (They raised me.) I am the daughter of Delena A. Marcum/James F. Kirk. Her birth record was changed from Anna Sue to Delena Ann in the Wayne Co. archives. She was born at Webb. I have slowly been piecing my line together with the help of a cousin in Arizona. I have recently returned from KY where I photographed several headstones. I could not find one for Sarah Wiley Marcum or Nancy Belcher Marcum. Any clues? Best Regards...Claudia

    1. Witchers
    2. Rhoda Dian Marcum
    3. Dear Claudia. I'm not sure how well I can explain the Witcher part. I am a Bullethead Marcum. Other Marcums were known by peculiar names also; Big-Nose Marcums(Carl Marcum's line who is on the Marcum list),Chugarouse, Quillback, Lick skillet, etc. Then some certain person has his own personal name to set him apart, Jim-Pokey, Broke Leg Jim, Miller Mose... Then when one of these names start like the Bullethead or Witcher or I've also heard Witchy Wylie (though that may be another set) it gets passed down the line to the descendants. I have heard a few variations on the 'Witcher' name and where it originated. Herbie Dawson said that it could have been someone who used a willow stick and 'witched' for water for a well. Also, there were men over there that were known as Witches or witch doctors. I have one of a Dock Marcum. He is said to have been a man before his time. He used herbs and such to cure all ills. I have also went to Mingo Co WV courthouse and found a few deeds that state Joseph Witcher Marcum. I'm not sure if this is his true middle name and that's how it started. Or as Herbie also mentioned, Joseph could have been a Witcher and got taken in by the Marcums. Quite confusing. When you mentioned Leonard, you were talking about the one who married Rosie Bell Sparks right? Which one of the children is your connection? Rhoda

    1. Marcrums
    2. Rhoda Dian Marcum
    3. Dear Jean, I'm not sure how far your name goes back but in some of the census's in and around Wayne Co WV they spelled Marcum as Marcrum. I don't know if this would be the origination of your name or maybe it goes back alot further than the mid 1800's. Rhoda Marcum Burks

    1. Re:James Markham/Elizabeth Locke
    2. Hi Jan, Glad Susan informed you of the James Markham and Elizabeth Locke genealogy she has compiled from information given by members of the Markham Mailing List. I have minor differences on a few dates and place, but mainly wish to point out what I consider a major difference. The parents of Elizabeth Locke are (Deacon) William Locke and Mary Clarke. Their son, William Locke, born 18 Jan 1659 was the one who married Sarah Whitmore. Though I haven't done the research myself, these are the sources of information I am using: 1. FamilySearch International Genealogical Index (http://www.familysearch.org) for all above names. 2. FamilySearch Pedigree Resource File submitted by Robert N. Halsted, 606 Old Indian Mound Trail, Sun Prairie, WI, 53590 and found on Pedigree Resource File Compact Disc #6, Pin #538316 for family. 3. A book giving the Descendants of William Locke of Woburn, Massachusetts on the website http://www.heritagebooks.com/thismo.htm which states, "William Locke, Sr. is the immigrant ancestor of the Locke family...He made the voyage to America with relatives on the ship "Planter," embarking March 22, 1634. He settled in Woburn, Middlesex, Massachusetts, and wed Mary Clark (b. 1640) in 1655. Between 1657 and 1681, she bore nine children and died July 18, 1715. William died in Woburn on June 16, 1720, at the age of 91." This quotation is taken from the book, "Descendants of William Locke of Woburn, Massachusetts, and costing $35.50. The book has not been purchased by me. 4.The web site http://micromagic.net/~nmcarter/dat2.htm also indicates that William Locke, was born 28 Jun 1684 at Woburn, Mass. to William Locke and Sarah Whitmore. This latter William Locke was born 18 Jan 1659 at Woburn to (Deacon) William Locke and Mary Clarke. The date of birth of the (Deacon) William Locke is 13 Dec 1628 at Stepney Parish, London, England. This is almost all the information I have. -Lois

I have just returned from a visit to my home town of Louisa, KY, where I also visited & photographed some MARCUM headstones. I was told by a MARCUM descendant that "Miller Mose" was married three times, instead of the two that I have documented! This person mentioned a set known as "WITHCHERs". Can anyone explain this?? 3. Mye Goodye Cosynes, This book has now been corrected in its Word7 format and is available for your viewing and printing from the "TW" website. The slight problem was only due to the page layout being 0.1" out on the footer section. This resulted in the page numbers not printing out properly. I would suggest that one prints out pages 1, 2, 21, and 22 as a test set of pages before printing out the whole document. If these print OK, you are pritty safe to print out the whole document correctly. If there are any other problems, please do let me know directly, and I can make adjustments where necessary and possible. Remember, when asked for a password, just click on the 'Read Only' tab to continue. You must have MS Word7 correctly installed on your PC to view and print this document. If you have MS Word7 correctly installed on your compoota, the document will also automatically show as a web page in your browser. This Word7 document is Chapter I only, and is 499kB in size. It is about half the content of the Rev. David Markham's book. [50 pages.] The Index.doc or the front pages of this book should arrive our way soon, probably within the next week or two. The one item here of great interest I am sure, is an absolutely amazing scanned picture and reproduction of the Rev. David Frederick Markham himself. At some point in time, a large version of such pictures will be made available to this list. Many many thanks to Dave Markham, NZ, for all his hard work and efforts to bring this work our way. To any-one who has benefited from this book so far, please do take the time to email Dave and say thank you for his time and effort in this project. The digitisation of this book is a first of its kind, and an historical occasion in itself, and I look forward to seeing the completion of this work... Yours Sincerely, Sir Ken Markham, K.C.B., (95). 1. "Markhams of America" by Leslie Ashman and MML... ... ...
    2. Ken Markham
    3. Mye Goodye Cosynes, The section in "TW" on the "Markhams of America" is now up and running. This can be found on the main menu of this website under Leslie Ashman's section. There is still much fine editing to do, but the basic layout of this section is now in place. If you have any concerns, email me directly or to this list. Feel free to discuss the information on this mailing list. This section is her entire website placed here in "TW". The main changes I have made are: 1. All her pages have been placed into a single menu format, and all the pages can be accessed from this menu. 2. All the pages have been placed into a similiar format and layout that fits in with the rest of "TW". 3. The section is not complete. This area of "TW" now consists of 202 HTML files, each one of these files will print at least one A4 size paper, and probably well over 300 pages altogether of Markham information. (Guesstimate). I have asked several permissions to have this information on this website, but can not ask everybody, as there were too many people that submitted information to there pages. I have at least 20 questions concerning these pages as they stand. The menu in this section also clearly shows what has been done, and what hasn't been done. I don't mind to add all the rest of the Census records etc., if I am given a '''final''' email or posting to add to the website. How about getting all the rest of the census records, and correcting the existing ones ?... 3. Mye Goodye Cosynes, Briefly, for those who want to print out the HOTMF Word7 Chapter I, please wait until further notice so that the page number printing problem can be sorted out. The list will be informed when this file is ready for printing. Secondly, Leslie Ashman's data now to be placed on the "TW" website, is unavailable till further notice. This is simply due to the fact that I have a vast amount of work to do on these pages before I make them available again. This should be within the next month or so... Yours Sincerely, Sir Ken Markham, K.C.B., (95). [A Phenomenal Researcher In The Mists Of Time] [Genealogist Extra-Ordinaire]

    1. Anderson Marcum (Markham)
    2. Lisa Marcum
    3. I am stuck. Anderson was born in the Carolina area around 1819. He married Ruth Swango in Gallatin Co. Ky. in 1839. I found him in a Census Record in 1850 in Franklin Co. Indiana, then back in Gallatin in the next 2 Census. All the records say that Andersons father was born in Virginia. When I have tried to match him up with other Markham(Marcum) I can`t find his name. It is possible that his name is William Anderson but when I cross reference that, it still doesn`t work out. Other surnames in his family are: Swango, Whiteside, Browning, Fightmaster, and Shaffer. Can anyone help me solve this? I have been stuck on this for 2 years and I can`t go back until I do. Thank you Lisa

    3. Mye Goodye Cosynes, It is with the greatest of pleasure, I introduce to you, our good friend and Cosyne, Leslie Ashman, who lives down under in Australia. Leslie was one of the very few people who actually helped me in my own line of research. This year alone, I have made telephonic contact with much of the Rev. Benjamin Markham line, and still much to follow through, thanks to Leslie. Not only had I never heard of the Rev. Benjamin Markham, I now have most of his line, a picture of him, and much more. In Leslie's section of "TW", contains her photo, 'Bio', and an illustration of the place she calls home. 3. Mye Goodye Cosynes, At long last... I have the absolute greatest of pleasure to write this message to you all !!!. Some time ago, our goodye cosyne - Dave Markham from New Zealand, offered to assist us with the compilation of the Rev. David Markham's book into a Word7 format for our use and benefit. This has also been placed into an HTML format on the website too. This book is being done in stages, and the first stage is complete, and is now available on the "TW" website. If you have MS Word7 installed correctly on your computer, the file will open up in your IE 5.xx window, or you can download it to your hard drive. This way of doing this book has the advantages of printing with page breaks and numbers !!!, and also viewing and the same within IE 5.xx with MS Word7 correctly installed. In other words, if you open the file, it will print almost as close to the original as has been set out... The document has been read through at least once, and I will do my own proof read at some point soonish. Any corrections to this book are welcome !. One of the great features of this book, is the clarity of picture content. The greyscale images are exceptional. Dave has already spent months on this first chapter to bring it our way. He has also had to deal with my local phone line problem, which is an extreme pain in my left PC speaker. Questions have been asked and answered. Chapter I of this book is approximately half of this book, it is quite long. This book info and pictures not found elsewhere in the Markham books, and also has the point of view of the origin of the Markham family from Claron. The book does NOT contain updated texts, and only the original text is present, a great feature. I would like to personally thank Dave Markham for his interest and efforts to bring this book our way. Thank you... To appreciate this book, you may go to the "TW" website here: "The Wanderer Above The Mists Of Time": http://members.xoom.com/kenmarkham/ Direct URL to Dave's site: http://members.xoom.com/kenmarkham/hotmf/index.html PS: If you are asked for a password, for Word7, click on the 'Read Only' box in the popup dialog box to open this file... Once again, thank you Sir... Yours Sincerely, Columbus & Ken, [Phenomenal Researchers In The Mists Of Time] [Genealogists Extra-Ordinaire]
