    3. To introduce myself as a new contributor, I am 3rd generation Australian from my great grandfather, Edward Markham of Rose Abbey, Kinsale, Cork, son of Thomas Markham and his last wife, Jane Weldon who married at Gretna, 1826. His home was Rose Abbey, Kinsale. Edward was born 31-7-1828. His father, Thomas, was a soldier of the 83rd Regiment. First an Ensign - enlisted 1782 - by 1790 a Lieutenant. He also held the rank of Colonel as Commandant of the Kinsale Yeomanry while commander during the Irish Rebellion of 1798. Thomas inherited the following estates - Rose Abbey, Mansfield Lands, now Summer Cove, Killaney, Co. Cork and Ashtown House, Kilkenny. Thomas had three families:- !st m.2-7-1795 to Elizabeth Elleyne Leary bur. 10-11-1803 daughter of Ellwell Denis Leary. Children !.Mary Fudger Markham - never married d.c.1842 2.Sarah b.1799 m.15-6-1826 at Nohoval Church, Charles Huson of Mt. Anne, Kilpatrick and Springfield, Co. I have a lot more information to contribute and will do so in sections. In 1994 I compiled a family history on my Markham family. There are many branches of earlier Markhams connected to this family who lived in Clonmel, Tipperary, parts of Kilkenny, Waterford and Cork, Kinsale and Killarney. When I send my next contribution, I will start at the beginning of all the families I know about; it will have to be in instalments and I will be very grateful to anyone who can help me in any way as there are lots of missing links out there somewhere, probably world wide by now. My great grandfather settled in the New England area of NSW with three of his half brothers. He moved around a lot and finally settled in the mining town of Tingha near Inverell. I was brought up in the country and now live at Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. My personal e-mail is whiteman@ausnetwork.com.au Looking forward to some response. 1. MARCUM, MUNCY, ALDRIDGE families
    2. While surfing the web I came upon the following web site: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bogue/aldridge/aldridge.html According to the information on this site Margaret Aldridge was born between 1785-1790. This matches with the Peggy Marcum who was identified living with her son Thomas Marcum on the 1860 Floyd Co., KY census as age 75, thus born 1785. Based on this information, it appears that Margaret Aldridge, who married William Marcum after his divorce from Lydia Sutherland, was previously married to an unidentified man with the surname Muncy before she married James Aldridge. She apparently married James Aldridge about 1810 and James abandoned her and his children about 1820 and left for NC. Since she was without a husband after 1820, that matches with the time she "took up" with William Marcum just previous to his divorce from Lydia. This of course suggests that Margaret's true maiden name was neither Muncy, Aldridge nor Marcum. Also the 1850 Lawrence Co., KY census also provides additional supporting information to confirm that Margaret Aldridge and Peggy Marcum are the same person because her children including Thomas Marcum, Francis Aldridge & Wealthy (Aldridge) Runyon were all closest neighbors on the census. The following is an excerpt from the census: 970 ALDRIDGE, Francis 43 M Blacksmith 300 VA Nancy 43 F VA James 16 M Farmer KY Owen 14 M KY Aaron 11 M KY Harrison 9 M KY Thomas 7 M KY Adeline 4 F KY PREECE, Cornelus 24 M KY 971 RUNYON, Adam 50 M Farmer NC Welthy 36 F VA Arena 12 F VA Salsbury 10 M KY Heriford 8 M KY Alexander 5 M KY Maria 4 F KY Caroline 2 F KY 972 MARCUM, Thomas 20 M KY Jane 18 F VA Elisa 7/12 F KY Of course with any new discoveries I uncover, I also discover other contradictive information. For example, the Lawrence Co., KY vital records shows that on Oct. 28, 1877 Wealthy Runyon died at age 64 of consumption. The record shows her father was James Aldridge, which is a match; however, it also shows her mother's first name was Catherine with no maiden name shown. I don't understand why her mother was listed as Catherine when her mother was suppose to be Margaret. Is this an error? Any thoughts? I understand that this gets confusing. In order to help reduce the confusion of this conundrum wrapped up in a riddle, I will recapitulate below: *Margaret Unknown b. 1785 VA. Husband #1 Unidentified Muncy Children: Unknown Husband #2 married 1810 James Aldridge b. 1785, son of James Children: Rebecca "Betsy" Aldridge Francis M. Aldridge b. 1807 m. Nancy Muncy Samuel Aldridge b. 1811 James Wesley? b. 1815 m. Mary "Polly" Chapman Rachel Aldridge b. 1817 m. William Callaway Husband #3 married after 1824 William Marcum b. 1784, son of Josiah Children: Margaret "Peggy/Martha" Marcum b. 1828 m. William M. Muncy **Thomas Marcum b. 1828 m. Virginia Jane Beavers Possibly other children * It is possible that marriage #1 never took place. The wording of the aforementioned web site suggests that when Margaret married James Aldridge, she did not use her true maiden name on her marriage record, but instead used her previous husband's Muncy surname. Perhaps, the married record suggested she was previously married. I have e-mailed the webmaster to find out if that was indeed the case. It's been too soon to recieve a response yet. I have ran across several examples in my genealogical research where brides used their previous husband's surname when they later remarried. I don't know why they did that. It just makes it harde for their descendants to find them. Any thoughts on why they did that? **As previously mentioned Thomas Marcum died from Typhoid fever in Martin Co., Ky on August 10, 1877, which was only 4 days following the death of his son William from the same illness on August 6, 1877. According to the death record, his son was 18 yrs old, thus born abt. 1859, which matches with the 1860 Floyd Co., KY census which shows him age age 1. The following is an excerpt from that census: #347 Thomas Marcum 32 b. 3. Dear Dorsey Jude, Yes, I see what you mean. The James Harrison I have was born about 1847 and I have no date for Moses. I found him as an Uncle on a birth of one of James's children. But like you said, she couldn't have been having these children and also Moses and James. But it was matching up so well! What a shame. You wanted Karen Nelson Marcums email: kmarcum@se-tel.com She may see this and write you or vice versa. She has been on the internet for a little while but I don't know how busy she is and I don't know if she still gets the Markham list. I hope she is able to shed some light on this for you. I'll try to keep an eye out and figure this out too. It did give me good insight in fixing my Thomas Marcum and Jane Beavers line. You did mention something I am interested in. You mentioned that Thomas died only 4 days after his son William also died of the same illness, typhoid fever. Could you tell me the dates on this William? I have a William listed for Thomas and Jane, b. 1859 and I'm wondering if this is him. Here's a little nostalgia for you. Some of the children of Thomas and Virginia Jane Beavers Marcum are; Charlotte, James, and Thomas! Rhoda

    1. re: William MUNCY & wife, Margaret MARCUM
    2. In my previous post on Tue, 15 Aug 2000 23:04:27 EDT I made an error. I stated that Margaret (Marcum) Muncy was b. about 1817. That is incorrect. I have racked my brain trying to figure out where I came up with that date because it off about 10 yrs. It must just be a typing error because she was born abt. 1828. She is listed on the the 1850 Tazewell Co., VA census as Peggy Muncy age 23, thus born 1827. Next, she is listed on the 1860 Floyd Co., KY census as Martha Muncy age 32, thus born 1828. She is last found on the 1870 Lawrence Co., KY census as Margaret Muncy age 42, thus born 1828. This makes more sense that she was born ten years later in 1827, which was a few years after the divorce of William Marcum and Lydia Sutherland in 1824. I thank you Rhoda for citing your source as Karen Nelson Marcum for the information showing Margaret Aldridge & William Marcum had a son named Thomas and a daughter named Margaret. I had long suspected that Margaret & Thomas were siblings because census information shows they lived so close together and yet no other Marcums lived near them. I did find in my files the death record for Thomas Marcum who died of Typhoid Fever in Martin Co., Ky on 8-6-1877, which confirms he was the son of William Marcum and Margaret Aldridge. Unfortunately, Thomas died only 4 days after his son William also died of the same illness. There is one problem that I would like to investigate further. You stated your source indicated that Margaret Aldridge & William Marcum's daughter Margaret Marcum married a William Brewer about 1848. This appears to be in contradiction to the fact that Margaret appears with her husband William Muncy on the 1850 Tazewell Co., VA census along with their children. The following is an abstract of that census: #1037 Wm. Muncy 35 b. ? Peggy 23 b. VA Charlotte 8 b. VA James 7 b. VA Thomas 2 b. VA As the previous excerpt shows, William and "Peggy" began having their children about 1842, which was well before Peggy would have married William Brewer abt. 1848. Your source also stated that Peggy and William Brewer had two sons Moses and James Harrison, who don't appear to be listed with their mother on the 1850 Tazewell Co., VA census shown above. Even though Moses is not listed, I guess it is possible that James who is listed above as age 7 is the same person as James Harrison Brewer, but I doubt it because he is shown with the last name Muncy instead of Brewer. Of course, it was quite common in those days for step-children to assume the surname of their step-father. Do you know how I can contact your source, i.e., Karen Nelson Marcum to investigate this further? Hello Markham List, I wanted to post a brief message letting you all know that I purchased the book, "Deacon Daniel Markham - His Life & Times" from Mark Goodmansen when it was posted a couple weeks ago on this list. I won't go into a lengthy review of the book but want to let all descendants of Deacon Daniel know that if you are interested in the historical context of his life, you will want this book. Mark has done a fantastic job of condensing British history and the place of Daniel's family in that time frame. His work is thoroughly documented and we are truly blessed to have a "cousin" who has put so much time and effort into our ancestry and is willing to share it. It is a bargain at only $20 including shipping! I don't know Mark Goodmansen but if you want more information on this book his email is Mrvl@cs.com. Most Sincerely. 3. Dear Mr. Jude, I may have a solution to your question. I too had found that older Peggy Marcum on the 1860 Floyd Co Ky census with Thomas and Jane Beavers Marcum's family. I couldn't quite place her either. I started looking through my data files and I think I've come up with a solution. William Marcum, s/o Josiah Marcum had married a Lydia Sutherland. They divorced in 1824 and I was told by a decendant that it could have been because William took up with a woman named Margaret Aldridge and openly lived with her. Lydia later married John Wellman Sr. Anyhow, she is in the right age bracket to be this Peggy that is mentioned. Also, It was said by this ancestor, Karen Nelson Marcum, that Margaret Aldridge had two children, a Margaret and a Thomas Marcum that are known, by William Marcum. There were other children but I have no names for them. Daughter Margaret had married William Brewer about 1848 Lawrence Co Ky. She could be your Margaret b. 1817. The reason I'm saying this is because Margaret and William Brewer only had two children; Moses and James Harrison Marcum that I know of. Yes, they were Marcums and Margaret went back to being a Marcum. Karen said that something traumatic must have happened for her to take the Marcum name back for herself and her kids. Karen found a William Brewer who married someone else in Lawrence Co Ky, and she said he must have had a previous family that he never was divorced from or had a previous family along with her own. Needless to say, they separated/divorced. Now, I did have Thomas Marcum under James Marcum and Dicey Chapman. I'm talking about Thomas that married Virginia Jane Beavers. Anyhow, now that I see this and see the connections, I think that I have Virginia Jane and children under the wrong Thomas. I only had 3 years difference in the two, but I also didn't find Thomas who md. Jane after 1880, and I have that Thomas son of William and Margaret Aldridge Marcum died in 1877 Martin Co Ky. I think this may be leading somewhere. Rhoda

    1. William MUNCY & wife, Margaret MARCUM
    2. My ancestor William MUNCY was born abt 1815 VA son of James b. 1790, son of Samuel. William married Margaret/Peggy/Martha? MARCUM b. abt 1817 VA. Does anyone know where their marriage record is? They are listed on the following censuses: 1850 Tazewell Co., VA, 1860 Floyd Co., KY & 1870 Lawrence Co., KY. Also, does anyone know who Margaret's parents were? I believe she is the sister to Thomas MARCUM b. abt. 1830. Thomas and his wife Jane, whose maiden name is unknown, are shown on the 1850 Lawrence Co., KY census. Does anybody know Jane's maiden name? Later, Thomas and his wife are shown on the 1860 Floyd Co., KY census. Included on this census is Peggie Marcum age 75, thus born 1785 in Virginia. It appears that Peggie is the mother of Thomas. If Thomas is the brother of Margaret (Marcum) Muncy, then it appears she was named after her mother, the elder Peggie, which of course is a nick-name for Margaret. Since these families settled in eastern Kentucky I thought it wa! s ! a logical conclusion that they were related to the Josiah Marcum family, but I cannot find a connection. If I could somehow find more information on the elder Peggie b. 1785, I am sure I could solve this mystery. Using her age as a determining factor, this Peggie fits in well as a daughter-in-law of Josiah; however, according to all records I have uncovered thus far, I haven't found where any of Josiah's sons married a woman with the first name Margaret or Peggy. That doesn't mean they didn't. I just haven't uncovered any that have. Since most of the wives of Josiah's sons are known, we can eliminate many as the possible husband of the elder Peggy; however, I have not yet found out who was the wife of Josiah's son Joseph. Is it possible that Peggy was the wife of Joseph? According to the death certificate for Nancy (Muncy) Webb, she was the daughter of William Muncy & Margaret Marcum. I found William & "Peggy" on the 1850 Tazewell Co., VA census showing William age! 3! 5 and his wife Peggy age 23. Their children were: Charlotte, age 8, Jas., age 7 & Thos., age 2. Later I show them on the 1860 Floyd Co. & 1870 Lawrence Co. census'. On the 1880 Martin Co., KY census William is living with his second wife Rebecca. I believe William & Margaret were married possibly in Tazewell Co., Va shortly before their oldest child Charlotte was born in 1842. 1. MARKHAM, Mary - Abt 1862 - 1891
    2. Yvonne Evans
    3. Hi all, I have an elusive ancestor, my gg grandmother Mary Markham and am wondering if anyone on the list has this particular lady in their family tree. Mary married Charles Sydney Dobbyn on 27 Jan 1885 in Shetland Ontario Canada, according to the Bothwell Times of February 1885. She gave birth to three children in Melita Manitoba Canada: Charles Stafford Dobbyn born in Apr 1886, John Francis Dobbyn born in Sep 1887 and Bruce Wycliffe Laird Dobbyn born in Aug 1889. She died in March of 1891 in Melita, presumably at the age of 29 and at the birth of her fourth child, a breach. A Dobbyn relative believes that she was born in Euphemia Twsp in Ontario about 1862. In research that I've done so far, Mary doesn't appear in the 1871 Ontario census, nor does she show up in the Euphemia area in the 1881 census, leaving me to suspect that maybe her family moved around or maybe she was born elsewhere - possibly Scotland as the family has been told she was a red-headed Douglas Scot. We are also wondering if she was an orphan. Sincerely, Yvonne Evans Victoria BC
