    3. Mye Goodye Cosynes, My sister Sharon is in the advanced stages of cancer now. She had expensive treatment, and just hasn't taken. More chemo was supposed to be administered a couple of months ago, but her Doctor refused to give it. From the first treatment, her body started to get fragile, and lost a kidney several months ago etc. The cancer has spread quickly over the last 3-4 weeks, and she spent this time at her home in Bulawayo. Since Thursday last week, they put her on Morphine, and on Sunday she went into hospital. We have been told by her Doctor that she has a short time to live. I phoned her in hospital tonight, and seems very tired, sick, and yet brave, as she knows her time is near. I will be surprised if she makes it past the weekend... I will probably be making a trip up to Zims this weekend, or sooner, and will be on and off this list for the next month or so. A brief page for Sharon can be found here: "Sharon Patricia Markham": http://www.geocities.com/kenmarkham/sharon.html Sir Ken Markham, K.C.B., (95)... 2. Derek Mauleverer Porter
    3. Hi All, My family, from Yorkshire, had a penchant for using previous family surnames as Christian and second given names. The name MARKHAM was first used in 1845 with the naming of my G. grandfather GEORGE MARKHAM PORTER. The name has since been in use up until 1940. The use of previous surnames in naming children has been a boon for me in tracing family connections. The one family which I cannot connect to is that of Markham. Does anyone, with Markham connections, have connections with any of the following families, prior to 1840? 1. Markham Marshall
    2. B CESTERNINO
    3. The following information does not relate to my Markham line, but is one of the few I've found mentioning Markham Marshall. It seemed many on our list were interested in this gent. Hope this helps someone. Cissi Colonial Families in the U.S. Description: This impressive database covers the families of the early English colonies in America. Beginning with the first landing at Jamestown this series covers families up through the start of the American Revolutionary War and beyond into the Nineteenth Century. Many vital records are included, as well as locations of births, marrages, and deaths. In addition to containing family genealogies this database also contains armorial bearings, or coats of arms, for some of the more prominent families from England and Scotland. Researchers will find this database filled with important information compiled by George Mackenzie, who was a member of the American Historical Association and National Genealogical Society. Source Information: Mackenzie, George Norbury, ed. Colonial Families of the United States of America. New York: 1907. Colonial families of the United States of America: Volume 1 ISSUE ABRAM MARTIN, Captain, b. 7th February, 1716; killed by Indians, 1780; Captain in the Colonial Forces of Virginia, serving under Colonel George Washington in the Braddock Campaign; m. 4th October, 1744, Elizabeth MARSHALL, dau. of Captain John and Elizabeth (MARKHAM) MARSHALL of "The Forrest," and aunt of Chief Justice MARSHALL. Colonial Families of the United States of America: Volume 7 ISSUE OF JAMES AND CATHERINE (MONTGOMERY) CALHOUN page 122123 The origin of the family has been distinctly traced back to the reign of Gregory the Great and connects with the Earl of Lexon in Dumbartonshire, Scotland, and one of the younger sons of King Conock of Ireland, who came to the same region at that period. The name of CONOCK soon became corrupted into COLQUOHOUN, COLQUHOUN, COLCHOUN and finally CALHOUN. The first ancestor who obtained the barony of COLQUHOUN in Dumbartonshire, was Umphredies, who lived in the time of Alexander II and his posterity have enjoyed successive possession ever since. His son Robert, who lived in the reign of King David, was ordered by that [p.122] king to storm and take the castle of Dumbarton, which was strongly fortified. His written reply to the King, was "Si je puis."-"If I can." He effected the capture of the castle by strategy. Collecting his trusted friends and followers, he arranged for a great hunt in the immediate neighborhood, which drew out temporarily from the castle most of the defending warriors and retainers, and when the chase was at its height, he suddenly sounded the recall of his clan and hounds and took unresisting possession of Dumbarton Castle of which he was subsequently created Earl. For this deed of personal valor and warlike strategy, the crest was bestowed upon him. This consists of a Stag's Head, indicative of the chase, supported by two ratch hounds, with the motto, "Si je puis," and below this the words, "Snock Locken" the war cry of the COLQUHOUN Clan. Succeeding Sir Robert was Sir Humphrey and after him Sir John, a man of parts and Governor of Dumbarton Castle in the reign of James II. Then came Sir John of Luss, who was made a Knight of Nova Scotia by Charles in 1602. He became such a zealous loyalist during the Civil War that he was fined £2,000, by Oliver CROMWELL. Following these was Sir James, and after him Humphrey, fourth Baronet of Luss. From him came Patrick, who was given an estate near Glasgow, and then his son Patrick, IV, and succeeding him was Sir James again, who became Principal Clerk of Sessions and married Mary FALCONER of Edinburgh. His son Patrick, a lawyer, was the father of James CALHOUN, who came to this country from Donegal, Ireland, in 1733, bringing with him his wife, Catherine MONTGOMERY, with four sons and one daughter, James, William, Ezekiel, Patrick and Catherine. The cognomens of James and Patrick have had the preference for eldest sons in the family. Their first settlement was in Pennsylvania and from thence they removed to the waters of Kenhawa, Wythe County, Virginia. They were driven from there by the Indians after Braddock's Defeat, and established Calhoun Settlement, in Abbeville County, South Carolina, February, 1756. Their settlement here was again devastated and broken up in 1760 after a desperate encounter, with the Indians, in which James, the eldest son, and his mother were slain. Subsequent to this, Patrick, the youngest son, father of the celebrated statesman and great-grandfather of our subject, was appointed to the command of a body of rangers by the Provincial Government for the defense of the frontiers at the time of the Revolution, and rendered conspicuous and sanguinary service in fighting both Indians and Tories in defense of his country. On his mother's side, Captain CALHOUN'S lineage goes back distinctly to the reign of King William III, at which time a census of the officers of the Court and Government, both civil and clerical, shows the name of William Green (in 1693-1694) among the select body guard of one hundred under command of Charles, Earl of Manchester, in daily waiting upon the King. They were required to be men of the best quality and not less than six feet high. Their attire consisted of scarlet coats to the knee, scarlet breeches, richly mounted with black velvet, broad crown caps with velvet bands, and distinguished by ribbons of the King's color. Robert, the son of the above William, was born in 1695, and emigrated to Virginia with his uncle, Sir William DUFF, a Quaker, about the year 1717. Sir William settled in what is now King [p.123] George County, Virginia, and acquired large landed possessions. Duff GREEN, son of the above Robert, was next in line of maternal ancestry. He married for his second wife, Ann, dau. of Col. Henry WILLIS, founder of Fredericksburg, Virginia, whose wife, Mildred WASHINGTON was aunt and god mother of Gen. George WASHINGTON, which thus brought his children into blood relations with the Father of his Country; these ties also exist with the LEES, LEWISES and HENRYS of Virginia. John GREEN, the eldest son of this Duff GREEN, by his first marriage was father of the distinguished jurist and scholar, William GREEN, LL.D., of Richmond, Virginia (b. in 1809 and d. 1880) who left a conspicuous history in jurisprudence. The above John GREEN was appointed a Captain of the Culpepper Minute Men, in the War of the Revolution and had reached the rank of Colonel of the First Virginia Regiment, when leading the advance of the storming party at Great Bridge. He was also seriously wounded in the engagement at Mamorouk. The previously mentioned William GREEN, who is next in direct maternal line of Captain CALHOUN'S ancestry, was the youngest son of the above Duff. He became a Revolutionary soldier at the age of fifteen and was with Washington at Valley Forge in the winter of 1777-1778, and afterwards with General MORGAN at Cowpens. He m. Ann MARSHALL, who was a cousin of Chief Justice John MARSHALL and also of the celebrated Humphrey MARSHALL of Kentucky. Next in line was Gen. Duff GREEN, the noted diplomat, soldier and editor of Gen. JACKSON'S time, who served with General HARRISON'S command in the War of 1812. Gen. Duff GREEN'S maternal grand father was Markham MARSHALL, whose wife was Ann BALLEY, and these resided for some time in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, from whence they removed to Wayne County, Kentucky. It is said that the descendants of Ann BAILEY and Mildred WASHINGTON include more distinguished names than any other families in America. Gen. Duff GREEN of Kentucky was the father of Margaret Maria GREEN, who was his second child and Colonel CALHOUN'S mother. Her mother was Lucretia EDWARDS, a sister of Ninian EDWARDS, a distinguished jurist and first Governor of Illinois.

    3. Has anyone every heard of Rainey/Reany Freeman born 6 April 1801 in Wake Co,? NC and married to Spencer Marcum/Marcom ( born 18 Oct. 1798 Orange Co, NC ) March 1827. Reany, Spencer and family moved to Haywood Co, Tn in the last summer of 1836. The marriage records of Wake Co, NC list Rainey as marring Spencer Martin, but this is wrong last name. I am looking for the parents of Rainey. All I know about her parents is that her father was a dance instructor of great fame in Wake Co, NC. They had a large mansion and many slaves. I have a lot of information on this line of the Marcom/Marcum family to share if anyone needs it, but nothing as yet on the Freeman side. Robert Sinclair in Tennessee

Don't forget Marcom. I found my actual relatives after 10 years of digging under Marghum..........would never have thought to look under that. This was after a complete search of the archives....small town, luckily......for the area I knew they were there but the soundex didn't pop them up. Spelling was either problem of how the census taker either heard the name or thought to spell it. Later censuses name was spelled correct. I always wondered if the person from whom the census taker was getting information was either drunk, had a speech impediment or as might well be the case, was from the south....my people had just moved up to Illinois from the south. Interesting what one can surmise from all this stuff!!! :)

    3. I am getting all kinds of messages from various Markhams who did not understand my recent message. I stated that John Markham of Wayne Co, KY who was listed on a post recently was not the son of Arthur Markham. This John Markham was my direct ancestor, and lived in Giles Co, VA. We do not know his parents at this time. He is an entirely different man than John Markham of Bedford Co, VA who married Jenny Eads. However, I am a direct descendant of Jenny's sister Ann/Anna Edds/Edds, who married Radford Cannifax in Campbell Co, VA. They were the daughters of Joseph Edds and Sarah Leftwich of Bedford Co, VA. 1. Wayne Co. KY Markhams
    2. Dear Hayley Markham: I am fairly new to the Markham Mail List and Markham research. I descend from Millia Markham, daughter of Archibald Markham and Nancy Kelley who is the sister to your George Markham. I don't know anything about your George and would appreciate it if you would give us his marriage date and place and the names and dates of birth of his children. Most of my Markham information has come from Ancestral File, bits and pieces from other researchers and from the Wayne Co., KY Vital Records book by June Baldwin Bork. Also there is a great outline of Archibald's children and siblings on the Markham Rootsweb Archives dated 3 October 1999 and also one dated 14 March 1997. Are there any other researchers of the Wayne Co., KY Markhams who can identify for me the James M. Marcum who married Alcey Coe on 21 October 1853 as outlined in the Vital Records Book by Bork. Groom is listed as age 32, a widower. This would be the right age for James the son of Archibald. Is it him? Also, in the Markham archives, I found a reference to marriages of Charles Marcum and Jane Marcum in Johnson Co., MO. Is it believed that Charles and Jane are the children of Archibald and Nancy Kelley? Thank you. Deborah Pirie

    1. Hello
    2. Hannah Lloyd
    3. Am looking for relatives on my grandfather's side. He was born in Botetourt (William Nathaniel Hannah) to N.B.B. Hannah and Roberta Snead Markham, who were married at Jennings Creek, in Botetourt Co., VA., in the late 1800's. I understand that there are lots of us out there and this is definitely news to me! 3. Mye Goodye Cosynes, For those it might interest... I have already completed the text of this book up to Vol. II, Chapter IV. The family descent charts and family arms charts will be done last. The family arms charts will go 'fairly' quickly, due to a new and improved technique I will be using, but the family descent charts will ultimately decide how long this Word7 book will take to complete. Placing these descent charts into Word7 tables takes forever. The main advantages of this "MM" Word7 book version are: 1. All pages are in text as far as humanly possible. 2. All pages for both volumes can be referenced through the INDEX of either volume. So if you look for a reference for a specific page, the information will be found on that page. So, say page 207 in the original book, will be page 207 in the Word7 version. 3. The text of ALL family descent charts and family arms charts, is typed out. 4. You can freely benefit from the largest set of volumes on the Markham family, in a single file, about 577 pages of original texts, that will probably be within, or in the region of, 10Megs or so. Down side: 1. This reproduction does NOT contain the colour pictures, but only the black & white equivalents. A future update when I get around to purchasing and original book myself. 2. I'm sixpence none the richer. Update: 1. "MM" contains as to date, exactly '989 097' characters of typing. So it should top the 1 Million mark by the time I am finished. A fair bit of typing by someone who is definitely not a typist. Yours Sincerely, Sir Ken Markham, K.C.B., (95). [A Phenomenal Researcher In The Mists Of Time] [Genealogist Extra-Ordinaire]

    3. Fri. 15th Sept., I submitted the three families of my gt. gt. grandfather, Thomas Markham of Rose Abbey and said I would send further information in instalments. Some years ago, my researcher in Ireland sent me a copy of a Markham chart beginning 1675 with a Markham whose first name was missing. Through information since gathered, he is now believed to have been William Markham d.c.1724 m.1675 Margaret Bernard d.c.1729, daughter of William Bernard of Carrick and his wife, Mary, surname not known. I shall now list their children and who they married. Later, I will submit their individual charts. 1.Mary b.? m.16-4-1694 John Bowen 2.Bernard b.c.1678 m.17-6-1700 Rebecca Briscoe dau. of Edward of Twining Kelly, Co. Kilkenny - family of 9. 3.John b. ? m.1701 Elizabeth Powell - 1 child known. (John of Ballinacarriga) 4.Captain William b. ? m.1716 Catherine Markham, dau. of James Markham and his wife, Honora - 5 children.- of Ashtown, Kilkenny - all his children predeceased him and he left Ashtown to his brother, Robert of Kinsale, co. Cork. 5.Robert b. ? m.(1)1710 Susanna Winter - 1 son, Noblet. * m.(2)29-3-1714 at St. Multose, Kinsale Rebecca Britton nee Rowley, sister of Sir Hercules Rowley -7 children. 6.George of New Abbey, Clonmel, Tipperary appears to have not married and left New Abbey to his nephew, William, son of Bernard. 7.Query. There was an Edward, not on the chart, at Clonmel around about this time who appears to be from this same family. In this era, a William, George and Edward, brothers, had dealings with land in Kilkenny. *Robert and Rebecca are my ancestors. Quote from "THE CROSSLE PAPERS", National Archives, Dublin.
