    1. Re: [MARKHAM] Don't panic
    2. Karen, The earlier lines of Arthur Markham are not clear, and as of yet, no one has been able positiviely identify these early relationships. Many records were destroyed during the Civil War, along with records which may validate the claims of William & Fonda Markham. So it here that you meet with many, many cousins at the same brick wall, all working together to remove it brick by brick. I don't know if we'll ever be able to prove anything and there are many more Markham's than those you mentioned that may fall within this same family, but proof has not been found. As for the Bedford/Botetourt Markhams, most of the lines that come from this area, have been proven back to Arthur Markham who is found in Bedford County in the early 1800's. Some of John of Botetourt's children are still sketchy, but evidence strongly points his way. A few years ago, Melvin Markham uncovered a probate record listing the heirs of Thomas Markham & Penelope (Wilkerson) Markham which gave documentation of their descendants. This record was found in a shoebox at the Botetourt Courthouse, unfiled. How many more Markham records may lie in these unfiled boxes throughout the country, we don't know (perhaps a probate record for John listing his heirs) but hopefully someday, these records will all be filed and become accessible to us researchers. Hopefully, time and patience will remain on our side and these shoeboxes will someday take us a step further in not only identifying the children of John Markham but providing some evidence on his father Arthur and his forefathers. I know from working at in my local Historical Archives that there are many unpublished records that line their shelves and I would guess that it is this way throughout the country. I think it is these unpublished records where the next key to unolck the Arthur Markham mysteries may be found. The published ones seem to have been throughly searched. Keep your fingers crossed. I'm not sure how to post to the list, so I'm replying to your post to see what happens. Here's my question: I keep seeing on various internet sites and in personal records some of the members have shared with me a line of Marcum/Markhams ascribed to the original Thomas Markham who came into Jamestown in about 1635, married Susan Greenleaf, etc. I have personally seen land records for a Thomas Markham, Jr. across the James River from Thomas Senior, and am willing to admit this is fairly good evidence of a father/son relationship. However, I keep seeing a line traced from Thomas Sr. and Jr. all the way to the Arthur Markham/Marcum/Malcom who wound up in Bedford and Botetourt Counties, Virginia, and from whom I can prove descent through original records. (This Arthur had sons James, John, Arthur, and Thomas, according to William and Fonda Markham's book, and I tend to agree with them, although the only firm proof I have for my own line is a processioner's record of son John filling in for father Arthur, who, as we know, was infirm and unable to walk the boundaries himself by then.) Now. Does anyone have any actual documentation of the line I keep seeing from Thomas Jr to Bedford County Arthur, or is everyone just accepting as fact the hypotheses made in William and Fonda's book, which they say is "generally accepted by genealogists working that line" ? It would indeed be nice for me if someone has proof, for example, that the Arthur Markham who died in Bedford after 1791 was the same Arthur who was born in Henrico County c. 1730 to the Arthur born c. 1670 who is supposed to be the son of Thomas Jr. This would put me back to original immigrant on that family, and would delight me greatly, but does anyone have the SOURCES? I keep seeing the info, but there never seem to be any footnotes, and this would be wonderful information for me if I could confirm it from the original documents. The information I keep seeing has been received most recently from Sandy, who was kind enough to forward her line to me, and I suspect she may have gotten most of it (she didn't say) perhaps from Tommy's site. I love Tommy's site, but again, have found no individual footnotes except for some general credits at the beginning. One of those credits is to Willam and Fonda's book. All this brings me back to my original question. Does anyone on the list have any independent verification of this line, or does it in fact all track back simply to William and Fonda's book, which is a great starting point, but a little shy on documentation in some places? I invite comments from anyone with information. I have shared pieces of my research with several people on the list, and am always happy to do so. I hope to begin posting some of my accummulated data to the list after the first of the year. (census, tax, probate, court minutes, processioner's records, birth and death records, etc. related to the Markham/Marcum/Malcom lines in early Virginia, especially in the Bedford/Botetourt/Jennings Creek area, which Tommy's site illustrates so well. David, your efforts are greatly appreciated, as were those of the previous listowner, whom I consider a friend. Karen Marcum Brandon -----Original Message----- From: David W. It's part of their American Memory Collection. The main site for the American Memory Collection is http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/amhome.html. The religious petitions are at http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/repehtml/repehome.html. The site has copies of the actual petitions with all the signatures on them. It's interesting to find ancestors among the signatures, and see their actual signatures (it looks like in some cases a clerk might have filled things in, but these are usually obvious because all the signatures look the same.) It's also handy for helping determine dates ancestors might have moved on or died, as it places them particular parishes on certain dates. My Markhams were in Chesterfield County, and I have found a couple of them there. There may be other Markhams in other counties as well. The ones where I found them in Chesterfield County are November 3, 1778, Chesterfield, Manchester Parish, for dissolution of vestry. Geo. Markham - first page, col 3, 2nd signature November 19, 1783, Chesterfield, Vestry of Manchester Parish, for adjustment of glebe boundaries. Geo. Markham - 4th signature Bernard Markham - 6th signature If you find a copy that you want, be sure to click on the high resolution version. They're huge, but the resolution is fantastic! 3. Sam, Do you have access to cemeteries in Claiborne Parish? It is there I understand that John Bunyon Markham was buried. The Sprata cemetery is the one it was supposed to be and it's the one that my husband and I scoured several times, but with no luck. There appears to be lots of the old part of the cemetery that has no markers. ----- Original Message ----- From: "David W. Minden was in Claiborne Parish at the time of the killing. It is now the county seat, er, parish seat, of Webster county. John probably never had a tombstone. We couldn't be that lucky. 3. When I was in Minden several months ago I visited the genealogist at the library there. I believe that the genealogy section is new at the library. I visited a cousin who lives in Vivian, LA and she and I took a trip there about 2 months ago. It was a weekend and John, the genealogist, doesn't work weekends. We did find some things we already had that had been in the Shreveport Library and Minden now has, so they are building their resources. There are no copies of the Minden newspaper from the date stated in the article that David found. It boils down to 'sloppy housekeeping'. The genealogist in Minden has sent several letters out, but has had no reply concerning the stabbing death of John Bunyon Markham. I also tried to find his marker in the Sparta Cemetery, but there is no marker. I have a feeling that he was buried and nothing was done following that. His wife's brother was sheriff at that time and his name is mentioned in the follow-up in that the judge (I'm bad at names) at the time dismissed charges against Morris. The brother, James, was apparently friends with the judge. There have generations of judges by the same name since that time. Minden is a tight-knit community with generations of families living in the area. I visit Minden several times a year and if I find anything at all I most certainly will let all of you know. The genealogist has my e-mail address and will inform me of anything he finds out concerning the stabbing. He is as curious as any of us are. When I hear or see such goings on by a researcher, it makes me doubt the motives and the veracity of the person's research findings. I was trying to find the father of my 2 Morris boys, James R, b 1845 and William J. b 1839. There was a Daniel J Morris in Claiborne Parish, 1850. I was just sure he would be a long lost grandpa. But alas, he is not my granddaddy. He is, however, almost assuredly the DJ Morris who stabbed John Markham. He is the only Morris in the Parish in 1850. The census lists his age as 32, born in VA, a planter, value of real estate $500, his wife Martha(?) age 35, also b in VA, dau Nancy, age 5, b in VA, son John Y Morris, age 3 b in LA ( meaning they arrived in LA ca 1846), and dau Jane, age 1 b in LA. Also living in household is a Mathew Bean (sp?), age 33 and George Bean, age 22. I don't see any Markhams in the immediate vicinity, nor do I have any idea why Morris might have wanted Markham dead. Good luck- hope this helps. I was awfully disappointed not to find a Morris granddaddy, but maybe I wouldn't want this one. Melinda *** David dmorgan@efn.org David W.
