I've received this answer from the Archives Dept. at the Scottish Borders Library; disappointing, of course, though not entirely unexpected. Was our George, perhaps, a recent emigrant to Teviotdale from Annandale? The chances of tracking him down must be limited - I could spend a fair amount of money and find nothing. Do you want me to keep trying? I am afraid have been unable to find 'Sineland'. There is a 'Singley' in Cavers Parish and there is a 'Singdean' in Castleton Parish, according to the book 'The Place-names of Roxburghshire,' by J.S.M. Macdonald; published by Hawick Archaeological Society, 1991. There is also a Singlie in Selkirkshire. I checked the microfiche index to christenings in the pre-1855 Old Parish Records for Roxburghshire without locating a born c. 1680. The Old Parish Records for some of the parishes in Roxburghshire do include entries before 1700 but some do not start until later. It is possible that some of the earlier records have not survived. It is possible that there may be information on records of the Jacobite Risings which are held at the Public Record Office which may be of some help to you. The Public Record Office finding aid on The Jacobite Risings can be found at www.pro.gov.uk/leaflets/ri2128.htm. The following extract may be of interest to you:- DOBSON, David.
