    3. Roger: I remain skeptical about George Marjoribanks's social status as implied by his listing in English documents in the category of "Scotch servants." At the time of his capture he was spelling his name in the traditional way: Marjoribanks. And he was evidently pronouncing it Marchbanks, since that's the form he chose on arriving in America. It seems very unlikely that any master would allow his servant to identify himself by the name of a distinguished family of landed gentry and, what's more, to pronounce it otherwise than phonetically. Such behavious would be regarded as intolerable affectation, bordering on impudence. Bob Marjoribanks
