Marjoribankses, I have been helping my distant Killian & Coleman cousin Eddie Killian do tents for his Clan Hunter starting with the Waxhaw Games in Oct. 1999. As a result, I: marched for M'banks at Waxhaw October 1999 did M'banks table at Tartan Day, State Museum 9 Apr marched for M'banks at Loch Norman 16 Apr got 1st cousin Harry to carry flag at Savannah 13 May (but due to squeezing events & my failure to communicate, we missed getting into parade at Sav.) & I will do a M'banks tent at Gatlinburg this coming weekend! Or is someone else doing a M'banks tent at Gatlinburg? Eddie needed to finish Savannah before asking his wife for permission to do Gatlinburg. <grin> I will email Gatlinburg today & snail checks tomorrow. Two questions: 1) Is anyone doing the M'banks clan tent at Gatlinburg TN? 2) Are any of you coming to the Gatlinburg Games? Dr. Dean Steward, Franklin NC phoned last week and said clan tents are free, but you have to bring your own clan tent and they want to know within 2 weeks, which is now 1 week. Franklin NC is the same weekend at your nephew's Huntersville AL Scottish Games. Wouldn't you rather help him in AL? I am not sure I can afford to come to Franklin after having gone to the above plus Indian Springs June 3. I will go to Franklin only if I can afford it or Eddie says let's go and that will require his wife to agree and it will require Franklin Games to let us notify them late. I cannot see Eddie making a decision until after June 3. Eddie works so may not be able to take off. He is planning on going to Grandfather Mt. I do not know if I will be at Grandfather Mt. BTW, Eddie has been wearing one of my Johnston great kilts but as of Memorial Day which was a week ago, he has joined a reenactment group due to NAACP and treason of SC legislature & so he wore his CSA uniform (wool) with coat, gun, & flag to Savannah which was hot. The Savannah Games is at a CSA fort. The only flag flying over the fort was the stars & bars (not to be confused with Southern Cross. Stars & Bars is also called 1st National). Sadly SAMS only did 3 anthems at the games: UK, Canada, USA. Some games do one of the Scotland quasi-anthems. Eddie's 9 year old (Kyle) likes the games & is doing well in the athletics. He is the only one that can participate in the games since the rest of us are well over the hill & in our declining years. LOL Of course we old folks can do tents & march in the parade. -- James W. Dear Brenda Jones: As you may have noticed, Sheila Hale, who is chief librarian at a genealogical library in Fort McMurray in Alberta, Canada, picked up the message about your Dumfries ancestors that you sent to the Dumfries and Galloway list and she passed it on to the Marjoribanks Forward. The data I have on your family line was provided by yourself and Bill Marchbank of Gainesville FLA. I believe you have been in touch with Bill. Has he given you everything he has? We can trace your line back to John Marchbank, born about 1784 and died in 1833 at Morton, and his wife Agnes Hairstones. But so far we haven't been able to find anything about their parents. I will keep watching, of course, for something to turn up. Best regards, Bob Marjoribanks
Found this on the Dumfries and Galloway list. I thought someone might be able to help her. This email came to me today - think on? TWO ETHICAL QUESTIONS Q1: If you knew a woman who was pregnant, who had 8 kids already, three who were deaf, two who were blind, one mentally retarded, and she had syphilis; would you recommend that she have an abortion? Read the next question before scrolling down to the answer of this one. Q2: It is time to elect the world leader, and your vote counts. Here are the facts about the three leading candidates: Candidate A Associates with crooked politicians, and consults with astrologists. He's had two mistresses. He also chain smokes and drinks 8 to 10 martinis a day. Candidate B He was kicked out of office twice, sleeps until noon, used opium in college and drinks a quart of whisky every evening. Candidate C He is a decorated war hero. He's a vegetarian, doesn't smoke, drinks an occasional beer and hasn't had any extramarital affairs. Which of these candidates would be your choice? drum roll please.................. Candidate A is Franklin D. Roosevelt Candidate B is Winston Churchill Candidate C is Adolph Hitler and by the way: Answer to the abortion question - if you said yes, you just killed Beethoven. Ouch!! Scary isn't it??? I've been studying the article I mentioned yesterday & thought the following extract worth sharing with the Family as a whole:- "Bathgate is an old-world place, King Robert Bruce having given it to his son-in-law Walter, Sixth Steward, as part of his daughter's dowry. Marjory was married in 1315, and had a residence at Bathgate, her husband dying there in 1326." This seems too close to the traditional explanation of our Family surname to be mere coincidence - I imagine that the early Balbardie Marjoribankses must have been well aware of it and woven it over hte years into the Family consciousness. My printer is a Hewlett Packard, and have been having problems and deal directly with the office in Amsterdam I telephoned last Monday (I think) and they couldn't access there system due to this particular virus. He also warned me of another one called I HATE YOU and two that suggest ways to fix them. Thrilled to hear you had such a super holiday and many thanks for your postcard. Hope to get together in the not too distant future. Much Love Anna Wood Farm Starston
I've just returned from a marvellous holiday on Crete & having kept up with the newspapers rushed to my computer to see whether there was any potential infection. When I saw that there were 57 e-mails awaiting me I was sure that a high proportion would be virus-carrying, but in fact the only reference was Anna's warning (Many thanks, Anna). The vast majority were concerned with various computer problems regarding e-mail attachments! Bob, I've received from RIBA a most interesting article about Balbardie, which I'll incorporate into the article within the next few days. Mike, thanks for message re teaching notes, which I'll study at leisure. Don, I'll think about your suggestions for re-invigorating the computer course, but am doubtful whether I can contribute a great deal. On the virus, I think I read that 90% of the world's computers had been infected, but since I have about 70 people (and three fair-sized lists) on my address book and no copies had been sent on to me I take leave to doubt this figure. Has anyone actually come across it? It would be v. interesting to hear. Roger. P.S. I do most strongly recommend Crete at this time of year - the display of wild flowers is spectacular and it's not too hot for a bit of energetic exploration. We went with Pure Crete, who put you in to locally-owned houses in villages in the west of the island & the local food & wine is much to be recommended. The exchange rate woks in such a way that it is quite extraordinarily cheap for Brits and Americans.
Gary, Sorry, I can't help - it's not a term I recognise at all and I suggest that it may be a name used only in America to distinguish it from other Scottish rites. Roger
There is also something called Taste of Scotland Festival at Franklin in the NC mountains at the Scottish Tartan Museum. The emailed newsletter of 1 May 2000 of the Tartan Museum says: "It includes delicious Scottish foods, Scottish music, dancing, bagpipers, border collies, children's Highland Games, and more! (It's) all right here in downtown Franklin from 9 am to 4:30 pm, Saturday June 17th." Are any of you able to attend that? I do not know what I am able to attend. If there is no interest besides myself, there is no reason for me to consider it. I received an email today saying they'd phone me about clan tents. The Gatlinburg Scottish Games will be far better. But June 17 might suit some better & coincide with a vacation. -- James W. We are leaving today, Mon. May 8th, flying from San Francisco to San Juan, Puerto Rico to meet our ship (Seven Seas Navigator) sailing via the canal to San Francisco - Will be home on the 26th of May - Really looking forward to the trip -- Since our grandaughter, Carleens paralysis we haven't done to much, but she's is doing better - She's even working with her Mom now - She still has hope that she will walk again , as do we - Her therapist says she going to make it -- Regards, Chuck Marchbank
I need the Marjoribanks experts of Scottish culture and religion to enlighten me on something. I have a Revolutionary War pension record for a Woolbanks/Wilbanks ancestor (this family marries into the Marchbanks family of Greenville, SC in 1878) that states she was married in 1774 by a minister of the Scottish High Church in Bute County, NC. My questions are; What is the Scottish High Church? Is it a Scottish version of the Anglican Church? Is it the Presbyterian Church? Is it something altogether different? Any insights that the List members could share with me would be appreciated. Gary Wilbanks

I have unsubscribed the following, whose mail has been bouncing for some little time: ipresn19@idt.net Additionally, I have been receiving bounces for eldon@bbs.neto.com, who is not a subscriber but who may be the forwarded address for a subscriber. The same is also true for john_k.m@virgin.net. Can anyone shed any light on these last two addresses, as to why they are getting mail from the mailing list which is bouncing? By the way, Barbara and I are currently in Budapest, after having been in Vienna and Prague earlier. Vienna is pretty pricey, but Prague and Budapest are VERY economical. The operas for the latter two are under $30 for the best seats in the house, and tickets are available on short notice, too. Crystal in Prague was very well priced, but we understand that Bratislava in the Slovak Republic may be even better, so we are headed there on Tuesday for one night. We go back home on Thursday of this week. Best regards, Bill Jackson

The Marjoribanks Family mourns the death of a gallant kinsman. Fred Novak¹s brave messages during the course of his illness were an inspiration to us all.Our thoughts today are with his family in their loss. Robert Marjoribanks Honorary Secretary The Marjoribanks Family
A sad loss, he was a brave man, and I am pleased he went peacefully. Anna Wood Farm Starston
List, Cousin Charles Fred Novak has passed on. About 10 PM EST tonight, Sat. 29 April 2000 from Fred's ICQ I received: James, This is his son, Larry. Fred passed away last night around 11:30pm. He went very peacefully with his family around him. I added this info to http://genealogy.org/~green/Mbanks/fredhealth.html and http://millennium.fortunecity.com/byker/362/Mbanks/fredhealth.html We will miss him. He subscribed to our list between 2 & 6 Jan 1998. He told us of his lung cancer some time shortly before 13 March 1999. You can see his photos, lineage, snail address, phone, & health reports at the above url. He provided money for us to do a tent at Gatlinburg last year. He was a descendant of Sam Banks. Since he was subscribed, his family will no doubt receive this message from the list to Fred's mailbox. The above is all I know. I know nothing of the final arrangements. I am in shock as we all are when someone passes. -- James W.
