For those of you that keep tabs on the M.'s that have "gone before" . After William died his third wife, the third Molly, moved to Murphee valley in Blount County Alabama to be with her Murphee childern of her first marriage. It was said that her grave was the first marked grave in Blount County, but many of us could not find it. I teach a External Degree course called Gravestone Studies and one of my current students is from the Sand Mountain Area, so I offered her a good grade if she found Molly's grave what follows is part of her project..."Old Mt. Moriah Cemetery contains thirty-four graves that are connected to Lebanon United Methodist Church. Listed is Mary (Molly) Marshbanks who was first married to Daniel L. Murphree. The church record book for Old Mt. Moriah list the death of Mary Marshbanks as January 4, 1823. Other names of those in this Graveyard are Ambersons, Bynums, Mortons, Allgoods, and of course Murphrees all of which I recognize as names from Western South Carolina and East Tennessee. Probably more than you wanted to know ! Jerry O.

Lucretia Marchbanks (sometimes spelled Marshbanks) was born 7 Feb. 1861 and died 28 Nov. 1934. She married Bayliss Earl McAlister. I have no record of any offspring. Lucretia was the daughter of Benjamin Gifford Marchbanks (1829-1863) and his wife Mary Caroline Batson (1829-1913) She was the grand-daughter of the well-known Stephen Perry Marchbanks. Other descendants of Benjamin include Brian J. Marshbanks (correct) of Greenville SC and the late Katherine L. Hester who was an enthusiastic genealogist and the leader of a group of Marshbankses and Marchbankses who held reunions at Mars Hill NC. I am not familiar with "Black Hills Ladies" and would be interested to hear about anything you might discover. It may be that Brian Marshbanks can shed some light. His address is <<75453.175@compuserve.com>> Best regards, Bob Marjoribanks

Bob, I'm afraid it's looking very unlikely that we'll be able to get to Texas in October - it is simply too crowded a part of the year. Roger

No reunions or other games have been reported as planned (or recently past). I am getting ready for Indian Springs GA in 8 days. I expect no Mbanks so plan to do a tent for Clan McCallum instead of Mbanks since there are always a few of them there. My 1st cousin Mrs. Julia HODGES WILSON (JuliaTHodges@Juno.Com) & husband John WILSON leave Sunday for two weeks in Scotland. They plan to see our Mbanks home in Thornhill, Central Region. At Gatlinburg last weekend Stephen Patrick said the owner of the house had never heard of the Marjoribankses. I think Roger came after Stephen so maybe she inquired further before Roger's visit. >Best regards, >Bob Marjoribanks -- James W. Many thanks to you James, and to Stephem Patrick, for all your efforts at Gatlinburg. I hope you're dried out by now! I am writing today to Betty Walker in Knoxville and to Jason & Deborah Killebrew in Calhoun TN. I'll let you know what turns out. In answer to Jerry Oldshue, and others who were asking, the Fort Worth Gathering dates are 13, 14, 15 October, 2000. The headquarters will be: Clarion Hotel 600 Commerce Fort Worth TX 76102 (817) 332-6900 FAX (817( 338-1917) They have agreed to reserve a number of rooms for us at the reduced price of US$79.35 per room per night, single or double occupancy, tax included. If you plan to stay at the Clarion , you should make your own reservations directly with the hotel, mentioning that you will be taking part in the Marjoribanks Gathering. There are, however, many other hotels, motels and B&Bs and you can get information about them from: The Fort Worth Convention and Visitors Bureau 415 Throckmorton Fort Worth TX 76102-7410 (817) 336-8791 or (800) 413-5747 FAX (817) 336-3282 www.fortworth.com I will be mailing a notice along with registration forms about the middle of July. Jim McDonald and Donna Lonnon are now working on our sight-seeing schedule but there are so many interesting Marchbanks sites in the area -- including Boling Fetz's old home -- that it's difficult to fit them all into our three-day schedule. It would help if we knew how many people to prepare for. If you're planning to attend, or are thinking that you might attend, drop me a line to let me know. I have a feeling we're going to have a big turn-out! Best regards, Bob Marjoribanks
Marjoribankses, At Gatlinburg this past weekend, we had 5 sign the register at the Marjoribanks tent: 1) me 2) Stephen Patrick 3) Betty A. Waller / 1912 Emariland Bld. / Knoxville TN 37917 4/5) Jason & Deborah Killebrew / 187 County Td. #5 / Calhoun TN 37309 Bob you might want to snail something to Waller & the Killebrews. I did not get to speak to Waller or the Killebrews. They came to the tent while Stephen & I were away from the tent. I had left my distant Killian cousin Linda Barkley Hoyle in charge of the Mbanks & Hunter tents. They gave no phone or email address or lineage. According to Hoyle, Waller planned to return to the tent but Waller did not. Linda said Waller was very interested. Still Waller & the Killebrews could both be merely Banks descendants. My distant Killian & Coleman cousin, Eddie Killian came wearing his CSA uniform with gun & bayonet & brought his 9 year old son, Kyle. They did a tent for Clan Hunter (Eddie's mom was born a Hunter) beside my Marjoribanks tent. They had about 18 visitors whereas I had only 4. Eddie's son was in the kids' games, battle axe, & wrestling. Eddie & son, Linda, & I were in the parade in our respective clans. Linda was in Haggis hurl & got 3rd place & Eddie was in Bonniest Knees. We 4 camped at Leconte RV Campground, as is my custom. It was $30/night for the little cabin & we boys pitched my tent in the yard of the cabin for free. I missed you all. We tried to make it in time for the parade at 6 PM Friday but did not arrive until 8 PM. Rain slowed us packing up & so Eddie did not drop me off until 2:30 AM Monday & Eddie did not get home until 3:30 AM & he had to get up at 6:30 AM for work that morning & his boy had to go to school. But we all had a good time. Stephen Patrick was only present Saturday, but I was glad to have a Marjoribanks cousin for at least one day. Linda, Eddie, Kyle & I made it to kirk, but I did not take the Johnston flag because it was duct taped too well to the tent & was holding up one end of the banner. So, we merely sat in the stands with the spectators. So we did not get blessed. :-( Then in the parade about noon Sunday, I left flag & banner because they were still duct taped & holding, so I just used the laminated sign. We had a little rain Saturday & two hard rains Sunday. Sunday it rained at about 2:30 - 3 PM and 5 to 6 PM. I remember a light rain Sunday morn. I am still trying to get things dry since we drove in Eddie's pick up truck. Stephen thanks to your plastic boxes, a lot is dry. My camcorder got very wet, but I just checked & it can still record. I guess Nina will report on the ABQ NM games when she returns from Vesuvius, VA. I "spoke to" (typed with) her husband Richard Barrett via AIM last night. She is helping her brother Henry with his new B&B complex of log cabins near the Blue Ridge Parkway. Maybe Richard will read this & give you all the url of the M'banks B&B on the parkway. :-) My computer crashed before I could save the url. -- James W. Bob and All, I checked the phone book and found a listing for a Donald and Howard Marchbanks at same address. I called and talked to Howard and his sister who is visiting from Oregon. They knew very little about the Marchbanks but said they came from Canada into Kansas. I have been given an address for their brother in Portland Oregon, as he is the family member most interested in the family genealogy, and will forward the address to you Bob if you would like to contact him. Dr. Donald Marchbanks is no longer living, however his sister still lives in Topeka and is in her 80's. This family knows nothing about Kate Marchbanks and nothing about Capper's Weekly. Even though I live in Topeka, I have never heard of it either. I will see what I can find out. Phyl -- mailto:fvvpjv29@idt.net (two vs not w)

Star & Anne, My distant cousin Eddie Killian will be snailing you a check for $50 tomorrow for 2 clan tent spaces -- one for Clan Hunter & one for Marjoribanks. (I will give Eddie $25 cash for mine.) We hope to arrive in time for the parade in town Friday at 6 PM. We plan to camp at LeConte RV Camp ground in my usual spot. Please email me if there is a problem or if you just want us to bring the cash & hand it to you all Friday eve or Saturday morning. I cannot locate a brochure on the Gatlinburg games, but http://www.maclachlans.org/internet/TN.HTM says it is $25 for space & to send the check to: Mr. & Mrs Lanny Payne, Gatlinburg Scottish Festival, 12405 Hounds Ear Point, Knoxville, TN 37922 so I will have Eddie do that unless I hear differently from you. Eddie is getting his flag & table cloth & Clan t-shirts, hats, post cards etc. (to sell) from Clan Hunter. We could not decide sooner due to having to see how Savannah went (what his wife would allow). <grin> Some would say there are too many games! :) -- James W.
