Just a note on "Hants." The oldest form of the county's name is "Hamtunscire" (it was named after what is now the city of Southampton) & in Domesday Book is "Hantescire." So the t rather than the p is of a more respectable antiquity!. Roger

James, I can't find Kilcronaghan either - I don't have a good map of Ireland. Robert Marchbank, son of Samuel M. & Janet Gillespie, was christened in Moffat 9 April 1756; there is no record (at least in Dumfriesshire) of his marriage or death. Roger

James, The introduction to George's will (at least, in the form I have it, which I presume is correct) simply says by way of introduction "Will of George marchbanks of the Parish of Raleigh in the County of Amelia, being very sick, weak in body, dated 27 Oct. 1740." He leaves everything to his wife for her lifetime & the total of some 1200 acres to be divided between his children. It is not quite clear whether the children get their inheritances immediately or only on their mother's death. So there is no direct indication of George's age. As you suggest, the phrase at the beginning could be a sort of set formula; I have always tended to assume that it implied that George was elderly, but I suppose that he may merely have been attacked by some disease - common enough, I guess, in those days. Although there are plenty of records of George indulging in lawsuits with his neighbours I don't recall that any of them give an indication of age. When I go out into the woods at this time of the year, there are red bugs, ticks, poison ivy/oak, snakes, and black berry briars nearly 10 ft. high that one cannot walk through. However we now have bush hogs that can mow the briars, kudzu, bamboo, & little trees, if we don't get the tractor stuck in a creek or swampy spot. There are gullies 20 ft. deep & 100 ft. x 100 ft. all over the county caused by rain & not contour farming back when cotton was king. We get more rain than London, but less than Wales. This county is were my [Marjori]Bankses settled in 1794. Admittedly the immigrant (Sam) did try to leave & return to the UK, but his wife was afraid of the waves she saw at Charleston. Checking 1999 emails mentioning Robert Marchbank there is just one: Sheila Hale's 19 Jan 1999 email about a Robert Marchbank being a War of 1812 soldier in PA per url. So this Robert who was the Flax grower of 1796 in Ireland, could be fighting in PA in the War of 1812. The war is only 16 years later. The Robert who had a son die in Dumfriesshire in 1810 could also be the Flax grower of 1796 in Ireland. Roger, when was Robert (who was born in Moffat in 1756 last in the Moffat parish records?
