    3. A thought just came to me regarding Robert's comment about a connection. This is very true, but I wonder how many children were in this family. The fact that Thomas Marjoribanks was a minister in that church, made me think of the fact that if a family ran out of names they would often name one after the minister. Therefore a connection but not necessarily a relative. I've had this happen in my family on more than one occasion. Just a thought. It might depend on the timing of the two incidences. Perhaps other members of the family will have more information. As our late chief used to say, The name was never invented twice." (Although it has been misspelled thousands of times!) Lochmaben is in the heart of Marjoribanks territory and Thomas Marjoribanks was once the minister in Lochmaben church. There are also Bankses in our family tree. So why is it called Greenlands (if not precognition for me, LOL)? I find Greenlands just north of Henley-on-Thames labeled in both my Great Britian atlases & my 1:200,000 map of SE England. Do I correctly remember there being a picture of it on Roger's web site? Using browser I find Greenlands is mentioned only in Journal 4 & is mentioned by name only once & that is in the 2nd paragraph of said Journal. So I guess I will have to wait for Journal 6's article on Marjoribanks houses before I learn who built Greenlands & when. Reading on to the 4th paragraph, why was Edward expelled from Oxford. What was the "prank which the authorities could not ignore". You have my curiosity up. -- James W. 3. Wow the list sure woke up. A couple of points. It's the 1881 Census not the 1861 Census. I DID not transcribe it, I just did a lot of cut and paste from the Mormon Church 1881 Census CD set. Roger, I have never used Scottish Origins, but one thing I have been told is that it is very sensitive to spelling variations. If you don't type it in exactly "right" it won't find anything. Good luck checking all those Marjoribanks spelling variants. Roger tells me he received the Edinburgh and Yorkshire census records. I did not get them sent back to myself, likely because I receive messages in Digest mode. If anyone else didn't get them and would like them let me know and I will send you a copy. They are both LONG. If anyone has Marjoribanks women who were Married in the 1881 Census they would like me to try and find for them let me know. If you have a married surname it should be relatively easy. I would need a year and location of birth, If they were married /or had children in the 1855 to 1875 period in Scotland, I can often cross reference them with the online civil registration indexes to locate them. A region of the country that they likely lived in at the time of the Census would be a benefit as well. Let me know Sheila I Hale

    3. Bob, I saw that too - fascinating as they were my great-great-aunts! Lots of other relatives too but the exciting bit is that I think I've now cracked the Australian problem - Sheila listed a Robert Marchbank (whose ancestry I have some details of) in Edinburgh & by reference to www.origins.net I find that he married Jessie Walker in 1881 - voila! Cessnock Jack's grandparents (but oddly enough I can't find a record of the birth of their children). Roger

    2. Roger Marjoribanks
    3. Jerry, All this sounds very possible indeed, especially when one considers that the clerk who wrote "Sineland" was an Englishman interpreting a Scottish accent - and possibly a pretty thick one! Whether we can make anything of it, of course, is a different matter, but having just solved a question re the ancestry of our Australian cousins which has been bothering me for seven years I have renewed hope! 3. Australian cousins, Thanks to the work of Sheila Hale in transcribing the 1881 Census I have been able to pin down the parents of John Walker and Robert Alexander Marjoribanks who emigrated in about 1912. Robert Marchbank (this seems to be the way he spelled his name at the time), described as an "engine stoker," lived with his widowed mother Mary and older sister Christina in Edinburgh and married Jessie Walker later that same year. Oddly enough, I can't as yet find record of the births of John and Robert, which are known, I believe, to have taken place in or about 1884 & 1889. Robert was 32 at the time and had been born at Swinefoot in the Family homeland of Kirkpatrick Juxta, Dumfriesshire. His father William was already 76 when Robert, the youngest in the family, was born & is described in 1851 as "annuitant" (i.e. living on some form of pension). I have ordered a copy of the Certicate of marriage of Robert and Jessie and will put details on this list or send on a copy to those who request it. I'm sorry that I don't have any individual e-mail addresses - all my address book was accidentally wiped a few weeks ago - so could those who read this forward the info. on to those who are not on the List. 3. Greenlands, a beautiful white mansion at Henley, on the River Thames, near London, was the summer home of Edward Marjoribanks (1776-1868) who was a senior partner in Coutts Bank. The house is now a business college and was the site of The Marjoribanks Family Gathering in 1995. Best regards, Bob Marjoribanks

    2. Robert Marjoribanks
    3. I have just begun browsing Sheila Hale's copy of the 1861 UK census and I find it quite fascinating. I discovered, for instance, three unmarried daughters of Edward Marjoribanks of Greenlands -- Maria, 64, Emma, 58 and Laura, 54 -- all living together at 15 Sussex Square, Paddington, London, with no one to look after them except a butler, a cook-housekeeper, two ladies' maids, a housemaid, an under housemaid, a kitchen maid a footman and a boot-maker. Best regards, Bob Marjoribanks

    3. Roger, I guess that I will be forced to admitting to having decended from the Armstrongs as the map that I used was a reprint of a 17th or 18th century map that was reprinted in a small volume on the Armstrongs. This map shows a small village to the northeast about seven or eight miles from Hermitage Castle by the name of Singlon. That would put it a the head of Teviot waters. If you look at that area today the village in that same location is Singdean. Do you think this is the present name of what was Sineland? I also notice that among the group sent to the colonies after the 1715 there were many by the name of Mc Intoish and Stewart do you think one of these was the family that George was servant to? When George got to Virginia he was unindentured ,but the fact that he did not clain land until about seven years later probably indicates that he was indentured after he arrived .I guessed that it may have been to the Echols since marriages of indentured servants and daughters of masters was common. So what would be nice to have would be a copy of his indenture and with this we could also determine if he could read and write. Since I last was in contact I have gone back and checked all of the records that I have and found that all I have are copies of typescripts and the only note in them on a signature indicates that George" made his mark ". This of course would be strong evidence that he did not know how to write and came from a humble background. Well as usual I ramble.Let me know what you think I will be here all day as it is a hundred and five out side and at my age I plan to stay indoors. Jerry
