    1. [MarinGenSoc] Renovations at Salt Lake FHC
    2. Jana Black
    3. Hello everyone, This message was posted on the USGW-All-L this AM. I asked for and have been given permission to repost it here, intact. It has terrific information letting us know what renovations are going on in SLC at the FHC and what direction they believe research is headed for genealogists. Note, they are increasing the number of computers on every floor and reducing the number of readers... they are putting the CD ROM collection on the network. David notes why they are adding cabinets... My conclusions... as I have told you before... no longer can you effectively research genealogy with out at least some basic computer skills. If you do not have them, you might consider attending some of the classes offered by Golden Gate Computer Society to get them! Jana Black ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From: W. David Samuelsen [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, July 14, 2001 10:33 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [ALL-L] Family History Library's MAJOR renovation The Family History Library in Salt Lake City is undergoing major renovation and it isn't minor by any standards! Right now the main floor and the B2 (British floor) are in middle of major renovations. Later it will be B1 (International) and Floor 2 (US/Canada). The renovations started July 6th and expect to end sometime in early fall. The Library will remain open throughout the renovations. Before/After Changes on each floor. B1 (International) Microfilm Readers 146 - 144 Cabinets 533-426 Computer stations 12-40 Microfiche stations 16-16 Flat Tables 28-46 Study carrels 0-0 B2 (British) Readers 134-109 Cabinets 144-144 Computer stations 14-40 Microfiche stations 24-24 Flat Tables 92-120 Study carrels 15-0 Main Floor (that's where the US/Canada books are located) Computer Stations 17-40 Microfiche stations 7-4 Flat Tables 146-144 Study carrels 29-0 Floor 2 (where the US/Canada microfilms are) Readers 343-251 Cabinets 418-464 Computer Stations 18-40 Microfiche stations 20-16 Flat tables 40-0 The latest additions to US/Canada microfilms will be moved to Floor 2. hence the increase of the cabinets. Study carrels are the individual booths. Done away. Computer stations will he all networked and has access to hundreds of CDs on servers. The Automated Data Center will be no more. Book copiers are moved into new alcoves. Biggest change will be Floor 2 - massive rearrangement of cabinets and removal of readers (Model 2020 - the most desisted model with cute little crank). David Rencher is the Director who is tech savvy (anyone who's involved in FGS, NGS and GenTech will remember him.) He ordered the Library to be more accessible to disabled as well, including cutting the legs of high tables to bring reference books down to be accessible by the wheelchaired users. W.
