General Meeting July 25, 2001 - 7:30 P.M. Marin County Genealogical Society offers "How DNA research might assist genealogists" with Doug Mumma from Lawrence Livermore Laboratories "For several years, a "Mumma-Moomaw Project" was worked on to assemble a database containing as many Mumma descendants and their spouses as could located from printed books, GEDCOM files submitted by various people and other sources. The number of people in the database now exceeds 46,000 and is continually growing as new data is added. It consists of two primary trees, one for Jacob Mumma and one for Leonard Mumma." "It has been demonstrated that DNA tests of the male Y-chromosome can be used to trace the descendants of a particular man through many generations and that these testing techniques are commercially available. Now for the first time, the tools and opportunity became available to answer some of these questions about Mumma ancestry and so the Mumma Surname DNA Project was conceived. E-mail invitations were sent to a Mumma distribution list of over 500 people to encourage men with the Mumma (or alternate spellings) surname to participate..........." Come hear what they learned about their family!
