    3. SENT YESTERDAY: Scots Origins New Data - 6 August 2001 Origins.net (http://www.origins.net) are pleased to announce the addition of major new data to their Scots Origins service; namely the 1881 census for Scotland and digitised images of the 1891 census. 1881 Census Unlike the 1891 census, the nearly 4 million records in the 1881 census on Scots Origins show the full transcript from the source document, not merely index data. This means that the Scots Origins users will have more information at hand when they are searching the census, and more fields will be searchable. A major difference from the 1891 census index, is the facility automatically to be able to view the records for all members of the same household. A free text search facility on place names will be available later in 2001, as will a facility to search on birthplace. The 1881 British census was transcribed by a team of volunteers from various family history societies, led by the Genealogical Society of Utah (GSU). The GSU provided the General Register Office for Scotland (GROS) with the Scottish part of the census, which has led to the GROS allowing EXCLUSIVE internet access via Scots Origins. 1891 Census Images Scotland is the first country in the world to provide to provide fully indexed online access to census records. The availability of the 1891 census images is a major enhancement to the previous Scots Origins service. It is the first stage in the GROS’s project to digitise all of its birth, marriage, and deaths registers and census returns. The 1891 census returns comprise over 260,000 images, and access to the Scots Origins database is by credit or debit card, via a secure payment system. The fee of £6 (approx $8.50) for a 24-hour session purchases 30 “credits”. To view a census image costs 5 credits while to view the index records costs 1 credit per page of up to 15 records.
