LEGISLATIVE REPORT - AUGUST 2, 2002 This is just a quick report to keep everyone up-to-date. WHAT WE STILL NEED TO DO IS KEEP OUR EYE ON OUR GOAL TO KILL SB1614 Because of the uncertain timing of the next hearing on SB1614, we MUST continue our efforts to let our legislators know of our opposition. WHAT WE CAN DO? If you have not contacted the members of the Assembly Judiciary Committee IN YOUR AREA, please do so right away. Contact information is listed below. While we have established Republican support, they are the minority. It is imperative that we convince our Democratic representatives to support our stand. SECOND: Be sure to sign the Californians Say No to SB1614 Petition. It will only take a few seconds. http://www.petitiononline.con/intrpid/petition.html The opposition's suggested amendments to the bill have been reject outright by the Governor. The bill was to be heard on the time waiver yesterday, August 1, 2002, before the Assembly Rules Committee. That was postponed until Monday. Then is will have to go to the Floor for a vote on the waiver before it goes to the Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, August 6, 2002. This can be done. So, it is still possible that the Judiciary Committee hearing on the bill will take place at their regular session at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Opposition groups representatives, including myself and Wendy Elliott for CSGA will be attending hearing in spite of the fact that the FGS Conference begins the next day in Ontario. The Adoptee groups have set-up a Rally at the Capital at 7:30 a.m. on the North Steps, 10th & 'L' Street, before the hearing. If you are in the area and can attend the Rally or the Hearing, Email me and I will send you the details. We could sure use your help. Remember that your letters, faxes, Emails and phone calls have made an impact, but we need more. We need to contact our own representatives. Be sure that your representative knows you are a constituent. Constituents mean votes. Area society Board Officers and Regional Directors can, speaking for their organizations or Regions, write area legislators. Editorial items to the news media in your area also makes an impact. It was through our gigantic efforts that the Genealogy community stopped the closure of vital records in the mid-1990's! WE CAN DO IT AGAIN!
