    1. [MarinGenSoc] Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter: How to Trace Your Family Tree without Spending the Family Fortune
    2. Gene Pennington
    3. >From Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter: How to Trace Your Family Tree without Spending the Family Fortune. Go to --> http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2009/04/how-to-trace-your-fam ily-tree-without-spending-the-family-fortune.html to read the complete article. Esther Rantzen has written an article that will be of interest to anyone researching ancestors in England or Wales. She describes the services of the General Register Office that is now available online on Directgov. Some commercial companies charge as much as GBP30.00 for a birth certificate but each certificate costs from just GBP7.00 if you order online via Directgov. Public information about registering births, marriages and deaths in England and Wales has moved from the GRO (General Register Office) website and is now available on the government's supersite, Directgov, from 7 April 2009. One statistic in this article that amazed me was "GRO online ordering service currently receives up to 7,000 applications a day." No wonder they are moving their services to the web. Can you imagine the manpower required to handle 7,000 applications per day? You can read more on the TMCnet web site at --> http://www.tmcnet.com/usubmit/2009/04/07/4113281.htm. 3. LOS ANGELES REGIONAL FAMILY HISTORY CENTER TO CLOSE FOR RENOVATION The Family History Center on Santa Monica Blvd. will be closing as of April 26 for renovations.  It is expected that the facility will be closed until the fall.  It is my understanding that they have had rain damage.  That probably precipitated the need for this renovation.  The Orange Family History Center would be a good alternative.   Susan M. 1. [MarinGenSoc] Workshop April 11, at CGS
    2. Shirley Genetin
    3. If you can and are interested this should be a must.   Saturday, April 11, 2009, 10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. CGS Library, 2201 Broadway, Suite LL2, Oakland, California Microsoft Word Skills for Genealogists - Formatting Styles, Footnotes and Indexing A Publishing Workshop with Matthew Berry Join CGS member Matt Berry for this skills building workshop designed to help give genealogists the practical tools they need to go beyond the basics of Microsoft Office Word. Follow Matt's step-by-step tutorial and learn to create an organized family history with information that is easy to find using:      · Consistent formatting of information    · Footnotes or endnotes to document sources    · A comprehensive index and table of contents Please note that MS Word 2003 will be used for illustrations but instructions will also be provided for MS Word 2007. The workshop day will consist of lecture material with handout, a lunch break and a "hands-on" session so attendees can practice their new skills. Members are encouraged to bring laptop computers; the six CGS computers may not all be available for the program. Bring a brown bag for lunch or, if you prefer, there is a nearby deli where you can buy a sandwich and bring it back to the library. The workshop is FREE for CGS members but is limited to fifteen people. There will be a sign-up fee of $10 for non-members. (This fee can be applied toward membership on the day of the workshop.) There is a sign-up sheet at the CGS Library desk. Please call CGS at 510-663-1358 or send an E-mail to reserve a space. Matthew Berry is a San Diego native who came to the Bay Area at a young age and grew up in Foster City. He received his B.A. and M.S. degrees from the University of California, Berkeley, and M.B.A. from Santa Clara University. His first career was as a satellite systems engineer at Lockheed Martin for fifteen years; he is now Project Manager at Wells Fargo Bank in San Francisco. Seeing what he calls "a cool computer program" for entering family information at a family reunion in 2003 sparked an interest in genealogy, which was subsequently fueled by a desire to consolidate the genealogical work of several other family members. Matt lives in Livermore with Karen, his wife of 15 years, and daughter Christa.v

    1. [MarinGenSoc] Breakfast at Star this Saturday
    2. It has to be an April Fool joke, of course, but the entire article (not reproduced here) is pretty funny. And wouldn't it be a kick if it were true? We can talk about it over breakfast Saturday at Star restaurant in Novato - 9 a.m. Cathy _Ancestry.com announces Ancestry Séance_ (http://ancestryinsider.blogspot.com/2009/04/ancestrycom-announces-ancestry-seance.html) (http://lh4.ggpht.com/_mpUi75C5vC8/SdBCbn3FCkI/AAAAAAAAA50/_FCSVIsB_Q4/s1600-h/seance2[6].png) This first day of April, Ancestry.com announced yet another new service to help members investigate their family history: Ancestry Séance. According to company president, Tim Sullivan, There comes a time in each genealogist's research when ancestral lines hit a dead end. Sometimes it seems an ancestor simply popped into existence. Or available records dry up. What genealogist hasn't thought to themselves, "If I could only talk to this person, I know what I would ask." With Ancestry Séance, now you can! Ancestry Séance is a service that allows customers to pose a question to an ancestor and get an actual answer back, usually within 48 hours. 3. Hey...well... this combined with Gmail's new CAIDE program, announced April 1, that reads and replies to your email, inserting the appropriate level of typos, tone, brevity (or lack there of!) allowing that we never need personally read or reply to email ever again, it would seem all of our Genealogical work will be completed by the weekend. That would mean we could discuss other things at Breakfast rather than elusive dead relatives! lol.. yeah... right.. .like that would EVER happen! It will be a rare occasion, indeed, for me to join in at the breakfasts any longer. I have sold my house in Novato (deal finalized 3/27) and am looking to purchase in Roseville. Have a great time Saturday. I shall miss our lively discussions. Please say hi to our faithful waitresses for me and .... someone order the Star Protein Plate. :) I will be down in the Marin/ Sonoma area at least twice in the next month or so to repeat my lecture on DNA and Genetic Genealogy. 2. Dear Members: With life being busy, move, school, etc. I managed to have my trusty old email account fill and bounce me right off the Marin GenSoc list. I thought things had been too quiet! 3. Yikes ! I had over 30 messages in my inbox this morning. Is there another method we could use for answering a questionnaire - such as having the answers sent to one person who would compile them? The ideas I've been reading are good, the yes/no votes don't mean much to anyone except the compiler. We save the hard copies - I don't know why...we have no Marin ancestors. Anyone want some old copies? Ann Gregory

    3. Gee I sort of like knowing how the rest of the group responds.  I skim and delete quickly.
