    3. Jerry, Live oak is evergreen; red, white, willow oaks are deciduous. The acorn crops come at different times of the year. Anyway, glad you found what you were looking for. . . . 3. Ah ha!! Joy Best went further than I expected, and not only told me a number of places in Marin to look , but also that acorns are now either dead or seedlings. She then went online and found two neat sellers, one a nursery in MI that has all kinds of seedlings for $1 each in 100 quantities. The other sells ready-to-give seedlings, one style in a plastic tube, one in a soft cellophane pkg, one style wrapped in burlap and one style stuffed inside a hummingbird feeder. I got the kid the information. The rest is up to him. 3. Jerry, Forgot to get to my main point. If you mean REAL oak trees, there is a line of them along the old Larkspur train station (behind the buildings bordering the parking lot across from LEFT BANK CAFE in Larkspur). I used to visit them regularly in the 80's to collect oak galls to use in wreaths. 3. Jerry: Perhaps a gathering of acorns, directions for doing so and how to germinate might be a good substitute.... or a small sachet of acorns with a scroll telling how the symbolism applies to the wedding couple? Much quicker to do than germinate 100 seedlings. Much easier for people to keep as a momento.... how many would actually plant the oak? "Mighty Oaks From Little Acorns Grow.."   Celtic symbolism for wisdom, it is also often a symbol of patience and the fruition of long, hard labor. The oak is a common symbol of strength and endurance . In Celtic mythology it is the tree of doors, believed to be a gateway between worlds, or a place where portals could be erected. In Norse mythology, the oak was sacred to the thunder god, Thor. Norse legend that Thor sheltered from a thunderstorm under an oak tree has led to the belief that having an acorn on a windowsill will prevent a house from being struck by lightning. Some scholars speculate that this is because the oak, as the largest tree in northern Europe, was the one most often struck by lightning. Thor's Oak was a sacred tree of the Germanic Chatti tribe. Its destruction marked the Christianisation of the heathen tribes by the Franks. In Classical mythology the oak was a symbol of Zeus and his sacred tree. An example is the oracle of Dodona, which in prehistory consisted solely of a holy oak. The Oak tree is traditionally sacred to Serbs and is widely used throughout Serbia on national and regional symbols both old and new. Happy Trails, Lauren<who'd like to hear more of why the acorns are being used for this wedding.... and is it Niles' wedding?

    3. Jerry, I personally have and am currently growing coast live oaks from acorns taken from a desirable tree next to my house. I must tell you that the time to do this is in the fall when you need to collect the acorns. Then the acorns need to be planted in the winter when the rains are here. If you don't follow this cycle then the acorns dry out and will not germinate for you. Sorry about your ASAP but you have to wait until the next acorn harvest. You might be able to dig up some young trees growing under an oak tree if the deer haven't gotten to them first. 3. Have you been counting the toll of American soldiers killed in Iraq and Afganistan? Do you remember the gold stars on the windows of homes during World War II? None of these, or any other American war can match the 600,000 American casualties suffered in the Civil War. That is one reason to attend this Wednesday's MCGS meeting on "Chasing a Civil War Ancestor." The chase will be led by Jeffrey Valliant, a history buff and candidate for our new Board. With Jeffrey's guidance on useful websites, Civil War service records and pension records, you might even come across an ancestor you didn't know you had! Hope to see you at the LDS Church at 7:30, and don't forget to bring your recyclable bottles and cans to help defray MCGS expenses. Bill Bryant Secretary

    3. Carlma: You need to ensure to capture the entire URL for it to work. The URL had split to a second line. <http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2009/04/a-preservation-problem.html> If one uses < and > to encapsulate a URL, it does not split, but rather is "read" as one continuous line/address.
