Spotlight: Various Newspaper Resources by Valerie Beaudrault California Digital Newspaper Collection http://cdnc.ucr.edu/about_us.html The California Digital Newspaper Collection covers the years 1846 through 1922, plus a few months in 2006 and 2008. The collection includes the following newspapers: Daily Alta California, 1849–1891; San Francisco Call, 1890–1912; Amador Ledger, 1900–1911; Imperial Valley Press, 1901–1911; Sacramento Daily Union, 1851–1895; the Los Angeles Herald, 1905–1910; the Californian, 1846–1848; the California Star, 1847–1848; California Star and Californian, 1848; Sacramento Transcript, 1850–1851; Placer Times, 1849–1850; Pacific Rural Press, 1871–1922; Marinscope, November 2008; Santa Cruz Sentinel, April 2008; Sausalito News, 1885–1922; and Black Voice News, March, April, and June 2006. Database users may search the collection by entering keywords in the search box. Searches may be limited to a specific newspaper. You can also browse the collection by newspaper title or by publication date. When browsing by title or date click on the month in the desired year. This will open a new page with a calendar for the month you’ve chosen. Newspaper title links will appear on the dates on which issues were published. Click on the title link to access the issue for the specific date. Newspaper Websites with Searchable Archives In some cases researchers will find that a newspaper’s website will allow them to search its archives and view the full text or an article for free. Two such newspapers are the Times Union of Troy, New York, and the Nashua Telegraph of Nashua, New Hampshire. This is useful, if you are seeking obituaries and death notices for individuals who died more recently or, if your family lived in that area, you might find articles about their activities reported in the newspaper. These might include birth and marriage announcements and participation in the PTA, veteran’s organizations, or local politics. Or, as was the case with my family, I found an article in the Nashua Telegraph, under the title, Expensive Dog Food. I had been searching for articles containing my grandmother’s surname and I found that a dog stole a 15-pound piece of pork from the shed behind my grandmother’s house in March 1949! The game warden and police chief search for the dog, but it “apparently vanished”. My mother had never heard about this before I showed the article to her. Gene Pennington and David Williams will be giving a presentation to the Golden Gate Computer Society (GGCS) on Monday, May 24, 2010. David and Gene's presentation is titled "GENEALOGY, YOUR COMPUTER, AND HOW TO FIND YOUR ROOTS". Growing your Family Tree is fun but not always easy. May's General Meeting is all about how to get started using your computer, the Internet and local resources. We'll hear about the Family History Center's resources in Marin, what materials are available there, how to use the Internet to research your family's history, and what software to use when you want to organize the data you uncover. Gene Pennington and David Williams from the Marin Genealogical Society will give us tips for success, tell us where to start, how to compare genealogy programs, what we can find at the Family History Center, and provide handouts with website resources. Gene Pennington is deeply involved in genealogy research and belongs to a number of genealogical associations. His personal genealogy web site is http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~genepenn/. Gene is Chairman of the Board and Research Director for the Pennington Research Association and the web master and CIG manager for the Marin Genealogical Society. He gives presentations and classes throughout the year on a wide variety of subjects concerning computers and genealogy Gene worked at the San Rafael Police Department for 32 years as Patrol Officer, Detective, and Captain. He introduced computers to San Rafael PD, including the use of laptop computers in patrol cars and in the field, helped develop and implement a county wide emergency radio and communication system, as well as county wide information records services. In 1999 he started a consulting business offering computer services to small business owners and to individuals. He and his wife live in Santa Venetia and have three sons and six grandchildren. David Williams is President of the Marin Genealogical Society and is a volunteer at the Family History Center. David began researching his family history 20 years ago as a result of an inquiry from a distant cousin concerning his mother's family, and the search expanded to include both maternal and paternal family lines. Today his data base contains well over a thousand names. The search continues. Born in Monterey Ca., David moved to Marin in 1952. After working in the Bechtel engineering department for 18 years, he became a General Contractor for 20 years before retiring. He and his wife live in Marin and have three adult children. I really enjoyed meeting Ken at one of our meetings that Jerry Moore arranged years ago. I have visited Ken's office to pick up the autopsy report of a family member who died in a motocycle accident several years ago. Ken is a genuinely nice and caring man. I am no longer a Marin County Voter, but were I, I'd vote for him (again.) To all Society members The speaker for tonight's meeting is ill and has canceled her appearance. In lieu of the speaker we intend to have an open forum discussion of topics of interest. It is important for as many members as possible attend since we will be voting on the slate of candidates for next years Board of Directors. Please plan to attend as unstructured events often turn out to be the best. Dave Williams President, MCGS
Thanks, Bill. We all need an extra jog these days...a reminder of what day it is! see you tonight! Susan Trumbull ---------- Original Message ---------- From: Bill Bryant <w.bryant@comcast.net> To: MCGS <maringensoc@rootsweb.com> Subject: [MarinGenSoc] MCGS April 28 Meeting Reminder Date: Mon, 26 Apr 2010 17:56:33 -0700 While reading my daily newspaper I occasionally browse the obituary section, looking--and sometimes finding--familiar names who have passed on. In genealogy this casual approach can be a start to more serious research on the long journey to find our ancestors. Just how to develop a truly effective use of newspaper research is the subject at this Wednesday's meeting, "Extra! Extra! Your Ancestors Are in the Newspaper." The presenter will be Pamela Dallas who is well known in national and local genealogical circles for her expertise on newspaper research, including instructional work on TV and radio. I for one have yet to become fully prepared and involved in finding the genealogical treasures awaiting us in newspapers. This is my/our chance, 7:30 pm at the LDS.
