    1. [MarinGenSoc] FW: Family History Month Resolution
    2. Jana Black
    3. -----Original Message----- From: Jonelle Ellis Russell [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, July 13, 2001 11:38 PM Subject: Family History Month Resolution Dear Friends . The following is a portion of a message I received this evening. Those of you who know me are aware that I have been strongly supporting Family History Month since I first learned of the effort. I encourage every one to take this opportunity to celebrate the Heritage of your Family and Community, Our families created the history that is the fabric of our country. I hope you will write to your national, state and local governmental officials supporting " Family History Month" locally, statewide, and nationally. Thank you for your efforts. Jo Jonelle Ellis Russell <[email protected]> I am copying the text of both his resolution and the "Dear Colleague" letter below. Best, Juliana ==================================================================== "DEAR COLLEAGUE" LETTER AND FAMILY HISTORY RESOLUTION TEXT ==================================================================== United States Senate Washington, DC 20510-4402 July 10, 2001 Dear Colleague: It is with great enthusiasm that I write to ask you to cosponsor my resolution that will dedicate the Month of October of each year as "Family History Month." Within the last month some 14,167,329 people researched their family history and 24 million people have used the Web and email to locate or hunt for family or friends with whom they had lost touch. Researching ancestry is a very important component to self identity. It can lead to long-sought-after family reunions or life saving stories like that of Nancy Andjelich Margraff. Nancy's story, found in the book, "In Search of Our Ancestors," by Megan Smolenyak, helps to illustrate the need for public attention to the important subject of family history. Nancy started showing signs of an illness that afflicted her father who died suddenly at the age of 39. At the time her mother was told that her father had a rare illness that caused a cerebral hemorrhage that killed him. After Nancy learned she had this deadly illness, she began corresponding with the Minister of Health in Zagreb, Croatia. He kindly accepted and distributed informational packets that Nancy put together regarding the diagnosis and treatment of her illness. She disseminated the informational packets to her extended family members, many of whom are alive today because they were identified through family history research that lead to the early diagnosis and treatment of their affliction. At present there are some 2,500 genealogical societies in the United States that represent approximately a million people who belong to these groups. One such group, The Federation of Genealogical Societies, represents around 560 genealogical societies and ultimately at least half a million individuals. There is no doubt that the study of family history is growing in popularity and is an important tool in researching ethnic identity and genetic health concerns. I urge you to join me in supporting the millions of American men and women who have researched their family history by co-sponsoring the "Family History Resolution." For more information on this resolution or to add your name as cosponsor, please contact Chris Campbell in my office at (202)224-4412. Sincerely, Orrin G. Hatch United States Senator ____________________________________________________________________ 107th Congress, 1st Session. S. Res. _____ IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES Mr. Hatch submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the Committee on __________________ RESOLUTION Designating the month of October each year as "Family History Month." Whereas it is the family, striving for a future of opportunity and hope, that reflects our Nation's belief in community, stability, and love; Whereas the family remains an institution of promise, reliance, and encouragement; Whereas we look to the family as an unwavering symbol of constancy that will help us discover a future of prosperity, promise, and potential; Whereas within our Nation's libraries and archives lie the treasured records that detail the history of our Nation, our States, our communities, and our citizens; Whereas individuals from across our Nation and across the world have embarked on a genealogical journey by discovering who their ancestors were and how various forces shaped their past; Whereas an ever-growing number in our Nation and in other nations are collecting, preserving, and sharing genealogies, personal documents, and memorabilia that detail the life and times of families around the world; Whereas 54,000,000 individuals belong to a family where someone in the family has used the Internet to research their family history; Whereas individuals from across our Nation and across the world continue to research their family heritage and its impact upon the history of our Nation and the world; Whereas approximately 60 percent of Americans have expressed an interest in tracing their family history; Whereas the study of family history gives individuals a sense of their heritage and a sense of responsibility in carrying out a legacy that their ancestors began; Whereas as individuals learn about their ancestors who worked so hard and sacrificed so much, their commitment to honor their ancestors memory by doing good is increased; Whereas interest in our personal family history transcends all cultural and religious affiliations; Whereas to encourage family history research, education, and the sharing of knowledge is to renew the commitment to the concept of family and home; and Whereas the involvement of National, State, and local officials in promoting genealogy and in facilitating access to family history records in archives and libraries are important factors in the successful perception of nationwide camaraderie, support, and participation: Now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the Senate --- (1) designates the month of October each year as "Family History Month"; and (2) requests that the President issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe the month with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

    3. This is something we can all support! Info on how to make it work are included below... MCGS will sponsor, in cooperation with Marin County Office of Education, a Family History Writing Contest for local students - see the KT for details and GET INVOLVED! Jana CALL TO ACTION FOR DECLARING OCTOBER FAMILY HISTORY MONTH ===================================================================== As most of you are probably aware, in the past several years, October has been designated Family History Month. An idea that originated with the Monmouth County Genealogical Society has since spread into a nationwide campaign with the endorsement of the National Genealogical Society and the Federation of Genealogical Societies. In addition several states have passed official proclamations to this effect. Now we have the opportunity to make this a national event. The Ancestry Daily News has just learned that Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah is sponsoring a Family History Resolution to have October officially declared Family History Month. The resolution has been drafted and a letter has been circulated from Senator Hatch's office to all the other Senators to solicit their support to officially declare October Family History Month. This is a great opportunity for the genealogical community at large to receive national recognition for our efforts. To support the passage of this measure, we want to encourage as many people as possible to contact the Senate and urge them to support and vote for Senator Hatch's Family History Resolution. Let's remind them of the widespread interest in family history and the contribution it makes to our American heritage. Make our voices heard! 1. [MarinGenSoc] TV PRESENTATION ON GENEALOGY
    2. Gene Pennington
    3. My appearance on TechTv's "Call for Help" (http://www.techtv.com/callforhelp/) yesterday was a great experience and I had a ball! I met all of the "on air" personalities for the "Call for Help" program and the "Screen Savers" (http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/) program. Since both programs are broadcast live, it was a very interesting experience as well as an education. Prior to the "Call for Help" show, I was taken behind the scenes and was allowed to interact with the support cast and crew. I had makeup applied which was a real experience - thank God it goes off easily! I met Becky Worley (who opted not to do the segment with me because she was off the day before and was not briefed) so Chris Piriollo and I made the presentation. After the segment I was allowed to sit in as a "guest" for "Screen Savers" and watched the rehearsal and the actual show which broadcast weekdays at 4:00 PM (PST). I sat around on the "Screen Savers" set and visited with all of the crew, support cast and the on screen personalities (Patrick Norton and Martin Sergeant). It's amazing how they look on TV but yet somehow different in person. I am impressed with the number of people it takes to put a show on the air. The "Screen Savers" program has a support crew and cast of about 30 people. That does not include all of the people in the control rooms and the technical support people (electricians, computer support, etc.). I came home with a hard disk drive autographed by all of the on air personalities and the members of the support cast and crew. I'll add it to my display case. It seemed like the time flew by but I guess the time on air for me was about 4 minutes. We were not able to really cover the topics that I wanted to, but the show's producer was concerned about keeping the show interesting to TV viewers so we really cut much of the presentation out. I had to ask myself "What's that say about my presentation?" (-: I protested but eventually realized that it was either the producer's way or no presentation. I'm not sure I'll ever be invited back for another presentation but I asked them to consider having a regular segment on either show about computers and genealogy. We discussed some possible topics and they agreed there was some potential. However, as you can imagine, making a presentation on TV which will keep the audience's attention is much harder than making a presentation to a room of people. If you agree that TechTV should have more segments about computers and genealogy, send them an e-mail at [email protected] You can read the short version of the article I wrote for the show by going to --> http://www.techtv.com/callforhelp/projects/story/0,23008,3336331,00.html or if you are really brave, you can read the complete article by going to --> http://www.penningtonresearch.org/resources/articles/article01-01.htm. 1. [MarinGenSoc] Marin County Gen Web and MCGS websites
    2. Jana Black
    3. Hi everyone (especially Barbara :), I feel very heartened to know you were missing "our old website" :) The good news is: It isn't gone, it just moved! I apologize for forgetting to put a notice on the old Rootsweb server linking you to the new site and have now fixed that upon getting Barbara's post. Now for the rationale.... I suspect many of you know by now of the new Message Board system set up by Rootsweb/Ancestry.com that "replaces" the GenConnect Bulletin board system. Cathy and I have known all along that RW/A said at the time of the buy out last year that the GenConnect Boards were in a different category, so while we are not entirely happy about some of the changes in the system from an Admin POV, we are trying not to throw out the baby with the bath water. Still, I was curious enough about what was going on to do a bit of research that let me know Marin County was among only 6 other counties in the whole state of CA still using Rootsweb as a host for their GenWeb pages. By far, most of the sites are hosted by Compuology, a CA genealogical server devoted to providing free service. I wrote to the CA state GenWeb Coordinator, Richard Wilson to ask about the server and came to the conclusion that it offers everything Rootsweb used to, but more protection for our data plus the cgi-capability for us to put all our own vital information directly on our site where we KNOW it will remain under our direct control. Tara Works, the new San Mateo GenWeb Coordinator and I are collaborating on the creation of what we hope will be pretty much a "re-run" of the old Boards. I bought the software and Tara has the cgi skills ;). Once we get it the way we want it, we will donate it to the CA GenWeb Project for *all* CA counties to use hosted from the Compuology server if they so choose. Richard Wilson has given us the go-ahead for this. Our goal here is to be sure Cathy has the same control she has enjoyed over what gets posted on the Marin Boards plus the ability to correct typos, etc., herself. The new RW/A Message Boards do not any longer allow us this. We have also been concerned that many folks intended to contribute content to our Marin GenWeb pages (a free system) rather than to RW/A (a commercial system). By moving our pages to the CA Compuology server, we will insure ourselves that what is given in Marin will remain in Marin. FYI, if you posted Marin County data to the GenConnect Boards, you OWN the data and can tell RW/A to remove your posts from their new Boards. contact me off-list if you need to know how to do this. We have backed up the almost 10,000 posts that our Marin site has acquired in the last 2 years and once we have the new Boards established and the data repositioned, Cathy, Carolyn and I will insist RW/A remove our posts from their server. Please let me be very clear, we have no reason to believe RW/A will do anything other than what they promise. It is just that little by little our control over our data is being removed and we would rather insure this does not become a problem, ever. I apologize if this is "too tecchie" for you... the long and the short of it is that I have moved the Marin County GenWeb pages OFF the RW/A server and onto the Compuology server... the new address is: http://www.cagenweb.com/marin/ *YOU MIGHT WANT TO BOOKMARK THE SITE* You will see that everything looks pretty much the same, though we are updating and streamlining a few things, and the old puzzle pieces are gone as we create our own new Bulletin Board system. For now, we are keeping Marin County Queries on the RW/A site and linking to the Board, as the search and indexing system offered on the boards still makes it very efficient for researchers to find and be found by each other. As for the Marin County Genealogical Society website, it currently remains on the RW/A server at http://www.rootsweb.com/~camargs/index.html. However, in researching sites, I have learned that most Genealogical Societies at this point have purchased their own domain names, which simply makes it easier to find a Society's site and adds the benefit that Officers will have email boxes for the Society. Carl Black as Society President, Cathy Gowdy as Society Vice President and Jana Black as Society Webmaster have decided to donate the price of a domain name for two years to the Society. We have reserved the domain maringensoc.org for ourselves and *eventually* the web address for the Marin County Genealogical Society website will be simply www.maringensoc.org We will announce this change when it happens as we are currently looking over what the various servers offer us in terms of domain hosting (obviously, we want the "biggest bang for hopefully NO bucks") and email services. It is indeed a whole new world in genealogy!!! Onward... Jana Black

If anyone has info. or can suggest a source I can look into, I'd much appreciate it. He dealt with his progressive physical disabilities and ordeals with courage, grace, intelligence, patience and humor. A Memorial Celebration of his life was held on June 13 in Mill Valley.
