Dear Listmembers: I received in my email box this morning a message with the subject line "Your Genealogical Special Bulletin". This message was the same tired old bit of spam offering a genealogical search engine. Some of you have gotten the message previously. It says: "When you log in you can enter in your ancestors names and/ or information, just like the other engines. This search engine will then bring up a list of the web sites that actually contain the documents you are searching for. Each item on the list is followed by a description of the information contained within. When you click on the link, it takes you directly to the page within the web site that contains the keywords that you entered in. This saves you an enormous amount of searching time." Others have reported they got the same information from this paid subscription that they would have/could have from all the ususual search engines. When I checked the "header" information it appears to come from someone at AOL and the reply to address is different. Just doesn't ring as legit to me. Now they have added something new to their spam. Hopefully folks won't fall for it. They offer that "25% of all new memberships will be donated to the National Disaster Relief Fund of the American Red Cross." This may or may *not* be true. Sorry, folks, I just don't trust these guys. If you feel the need and are able, be sure to donate directly through the channels you see in the newspapers, on t.v. and hear on the radio. Don't be taken in by the many, many scam artists that come out of the woodwork in times like these. Kindest Regards, Lauren Lauren Boyd
My friends, If you get this twice, I apologize in advance. As you know, I am not much for mass emails. But this one is different. I decided to go thru my address box and mail it to anyone I am related to and anyone who holds a special place in my heart. I love the idea that we will all be doing this at the same time, globally. As I went through my address box, I realized that it indeed contains names and email addresses of a network of people living all over the world. My list also includes folks of just about every race, creed and color and I am proud to have relationships with each and every one of you. I do believe that what is going on now may symbolize the beginnings of new times for us all as a global community of diverse people who all are able to peacefully honor our varied traditions. AS I light my own candle, I will consider it to be a beam of hope sent to all of you with the hope that you will reciprocate with your own beam of hope. In so doing, we will create a literal network of light around the work... Won't it be amazing to see what the satellite picks up??? The U.S.A. has asked that everyone step out on their lawns tonight at 10:30 EST (7:30 Pacific) and light a candle. They will be taking a satellite picture of the U.S. and posting it on the news tomorrow morning. Please pass this on to as many people as possible. Remember: 10:30 EASTERN TIME.... 9:30 Central, 8:30 Mountain, 7:30 Pacific If you live outside the U.S.A. please adjust your time to match..... Jana Black

Hello everyone, This has been the week for webpage work :) Our new Domain is all set up (until you guys find my goofs :) and you can now find the MCGS website located at www.maringensoc.org Please bookmark it for yourselves! The CA GenWeb server got hacked at the end of the week and all the files were erased.... yippee :( not.... The site is back up, but what they had backed up for us is several months old at this point so I am moving on to restore it to its most current condition over the next few days. Meanwhile, I had a terrific meeting this morning at Marin County Office of Education and the LOVED our Family History Writing Contest package - thanks to all who have pitched in to make this possible! I will add something to the website about it soon. Last of all, I proposed that MCOE consider sponsoring genealogy classes using their state of the art tech lab in 2002. I wrote up a prospectus, etc. and they were very encouraging. All the details are yet to be worked out, but we may *finally* have in Marin a place where we can really *learn* together to be effective researchers! I will keep you posted. Jana
Hi all, I just learned of a *wonderful* resource for anyone with mid-west Native American research - check this out! http://www.rootsweb.com/~okgenweb/pioneer/pioneer.htm Jana

SENT YESTERDAY: Scots Origins New Data - 6 August 2001 Origins.net (http://www.origins.net) are pleased to announce the addition of major new data to their Scots Origins service; namely the 1881 census for Scotland and digitised images of the 1891 census. 1881 Census Unlike the 1891 census, the nearly 4 million records in the 1881 census on Scots Origins show the full transcript from the source document, not merely index data. This means that the Scots Origins users will have more information at hand when they are searching the census, and more fields will be searchable. A major difference from the 1891 census index, is the facility automatically to be able to view the records for all members of the same household. A free text search facility on place names will be available later in 2001, as will a facility to search on birthplace. The 1881 British census was transcribed by a team of volunteers from various family history societies, led by the Genealogical Society of Utah (GSU). The GSU provided the General Register Office for Scotland (GROS) with the Scottish part of the census, which has led to the GROS allowing EXCLUSIVE internet access via Scots Origins. 1891 Census Images Scotland is the first country in the world to provide to provide fully indexed online access to census records. The availability of the 1891 census images is a major enhancement to the previous Scots Origins service. It is the first stage in the GROSs project to digitise all of its birth, marriage, and deaths registers and census returns. The 1891 census returns comprise over 260,000 images, and access to the Scots Origins database is by credit or debit card, via a secure payment system. The fee of £6 (approx $8.50) for a 24-hour session purchases 30 credits. To view a census image costs 5 credits while to view the index records costs 1 credit per page of up to 15 records. If you have any queries regarding any of the material on Scots Origins, please contact: Jane Hewitt,Origins.net Email: [email protected] Tel: +44(0) 20 72516117 Brian Philp, Deputy Registrar General,(General Register Office for Scotland) Email: [email protected] Tel: +44(0)131 314 4411

Dear Listmembers: I don't want to scare anyone or cause you to leave the list, but need to inform you. I will also remind you that there is no way to receive a virus, worm or trojan horse from the Rootsweb servers. There is a *really* nasty worm out there right now. Details below my signature line. I have not received it from any members of this list, but have gotten it at work. I has wreaked havoc with my computer, but it should be fine soon. This is another of those that uses your address book to propogate itself. I find that most that do this only activate if you use outlook, but do not access Netscape's address book. The attachments are from people you know -- don't open any attachments you had not been expecting. For those of you that think you are safe cuz you run virus software -- remember to update frequently. I had a new computer with a new version of Norton that ran hourly. I have deleted Norton from my computer and now rely on "Housecalls for PCs" http://www.antivirus.com/free_tools/. You can run their virus program over the Internet only. They update twice daily, so can you, if you like. You need not sign up or pay any fees. This I have found is a far more extensive check than either Norton or McAffee have done. If you would rather, you can also purchase their program, PC-Cillin. Happy Trails, Lauren List Admin ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ description of message received with the worm: http://www.antivirus.com/pc-cillin/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=TROJ_SIRCAM.A&VSect=T directions for removal can be found here: http://www.antivirus.com/pc-cillin/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=TROJ_SIRCAM.A If you **know** your computer has been infected and know what you are doing, follow the directions. If you are less familiar -- get someone with computer experience to do it for you. Aliases: SCAM.A, TROJ_SCAM.A, [email protected] Description: This worm is a high-level program created in Delphi that propagates via email using SMTP commands. It sends copies of itself to all addresses listed in an infected user's address book and in temporary Internet cached files. It arrives with a random subject line, and an attachment by the same name. This worm also propagates via shared network drives. Solution: Deleting the Trojan file before performing the steps below will make the system inoperable. If the Trojan has been deleted please rename REGEDIT.EXE to REGEDIT.COM before following the manual removal instructions. If you want to use the fix tool, there is no need to rename the file. To manually remove Trojan 1.Disconnect from the network 2.Run REGEDIT.EXE Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command On the right panel, double click on the (Default) value and remove C:\Recycled\SirC32.exe leaving only %1 %* (double quote, percent one, double quote, space, percent asterisk). 3.Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\RunServices 4.On right panel delete the value Driver32 5.Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Sircam and Delete the key Sircam 6.Go to MSDOS Prompt and go to Windows\System folder. (C:\Windows\System or C:\Winnt\System32) 7.Type ATTRIB S H R SCAM32.EXE to unhide Trojan file. 8.Type DEL SCAM32.EXE to delete Trojan file. 9.Go to the Recycled folder (C:\Recycled) and do steps 7 and 8 to delete the Trojan file hidden in the recycle bin because emptying this folder may not effectively do so. 10.Go to the Windows folder and Search for RUN32.EXE. 11.If present delete RUNDLL32.EXE and rename RUN32.EXE to RUNDLL32.EXE 12.Edit AUTOEXEC.BAT 13.Delete @win \recycled\Sirc32.exe 14.Restart Computer To remove Trojan using fix tool: 1.Download fix_sircam.com and run the file. It will scan drive C: and subfolders. 2.If a Trojan is detected, it will prompt you to delete the file or not. 3.The tool will also restore the registry entries modified by the Trojan. 4.Edit AUTOEXEC.BAT 5.Delete @win \recycled\Sirc32.exe 6.Restart Computer If you need further assistance with this solution, please send an email to [email protected]

Location for the general meeting on 7/25/01 at 7:30 p.m. ("How DNA Research Might Affect Genealogists") will be The Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, 1100 Las Gallinas Avenue, San Rafael. Directions: Take the Freitas Parkway exit west towards Northgate Shopping Center. Turn right at Las Gallinas and continue two blocks. The church is directly across the street from the Marin County Office of Education.
General Meeting July 25, 2001 - 7:30 P.M. Marin County Genealogical Society offers "How DNA research might assist genealogists" with Doug Mumma from Lawrence Livermore Laboratories "For several years, a "Mumma-Moomaw Project" was worked on to assemble a database containing as many Mumma descendants and their spouses as could located from printed books, GEDCOM files submitted by various people and other sources. The number of people in the database now exceeds 46,000 and is continually growing as new data is added. It consists of two primary trees, one for Jacob Mumma and one for Leonard Mumma." "It has been demonstrated that DNA tests of the male Y-chromosome can be used to trace the descendants of a particular man through many generations and that these testing techniques are commercially available. Now for the first time, the tools and opportunity became available to answer some of these questions about Mumma ancestry and so the Mumma Surname DNA Project was conceived. E-mail invitations were sent to a Mumma distribution list of over 500 people to encourage men with the Mumma (or alternate spellings) surname to participate..........." Come hear what they learned about their family!
This was sent to a New York list, the author is unknown, - thought it fit us all perfectly: The Story Tellers..... We are the chosen. My feelings are in each family there is one who seems called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. To me, doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead, breathing life into all who have gone before. We are the story tellers of the tribe. All tribes have one. We have been called as it were by our genes. Those who have gone before cry out to us: Tell our story. So, we do. In finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I stood before now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the ancestors you have a wonderful family you would be proud of us? How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love there for me? I cannot say. It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who am I and why do I do the things I do? It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying I can't let this happen. The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh. It goes to doing something about it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish. How they contributed to what we are today. It goes to respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up, their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family. It goes to deep pride that they fought to make and keep us a Nation. It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing it for us. That we might be born who we are. That we might remember them. So we do. With love and caring and scribing each fact of their existence, because we are them and they are us. So, as a scribe called, I tell the story of my family. It is up to that one called in the next generation to answer the call and take their place in the long line of family storytellers. That, is why I do my family genealogy, and that is what calls those young and old to step up and put flesh on the bones. (Unknown Author)
Sacramento Archives 1020 "O" Street Sacramento The entrance is located at the corner of 10th and "O" streets. Take Hwy 80 east. As you near Sacramento, take the Business-80 (Capitol City freeway) towards South Lake Tahoe. Take I-5 north. Take the "Q" street exit to 10th street. Turn left. Several garages are located nearby on both 10th and 11th streets between "O" and "P"; metered parking is also available. An additional garage is on the corner of 10th and "L", the entrance being on 10th street. Or so I've been told - never been there myself! :-) Cathy "Time spent with cats is never wasted." --Colette
Hi all, Just got off the phone with Linda Johnson in Sacto... we are to begin on the 4th floor. If some of us get there early, tell the guard you are form the Marin GenSoc and Carolyn will have left a message to let us come up. We will initially store everything while we take our tour. Then you will be allowed to take in a notebook if you are using either Roots Cellar or microfilms. If you want to handle original documents, it is pencil and paper only. No handheld scanners, but they will allow flatbed scanning (you provide the scanner) and digital photography with some items by special arrangement! Obviously, it depends on what you want to copy and what condition it is in. Laptops are OK as are Palm Devices. PARKING: the cheapest garage across from the building is on 10th between P & O - it costs $.75 per 1/2 hour (but we will all pitch in so it shouldn't be too bad). The next best bet is the garage on 12th between P & 11th. I am getting excited - hope you are all coming (she is prepared to see 15 of us...) Hello everyone, This message was posted on the USGW-All-L this AM. I asked for and have been given permission to repost it here, intact. It has terrific information letting us know what renovations are going on in SLC at the FHC and what direction they believe research is headed for genealogists. Note, they are increasing the number of computers on every floor and reducing the number of readers... they are putting the CD ROM collection on the network. David notes why they are adding cabinets... My conclusions... as I have told you before... no longer can you effectively research genealogy with out at least some basic computer skills. If you do not have them, you might consider attending some of the classes offered by Golden Gate Computer Society to get them! Jana Black ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From: W.
