I look forward to sharing the signed document with you all at the next General Meeting. Take care. Carl Black President MCGS
As announced at our last General Meeting, the Society is placing an altar in the Day of the Dead special event happening this Saturday, Nov. 3. Wanting to not only share in this great tradition of the Hispanic Community, we also want to take this opportunity to manifest a somewhat different aspect of who we are as a civic organization in this place and time. I think it is an honorable thing to put some focus on the spiritual side of what we do and what we spend time promoting and embracing - our ancestors, and our families in general. Altars are being erected by all sorts of community groups and indiiduals. It should be quite a show. The event takes place at the Pickleweed Community Center in San Rafael (sorry, I don't have the address). Here are the details of the event itself: 4:00 - 9:00 Community Celebration 4:00 - 5:30 Family Arts 6:00 Procession through Canal Neighberhood Performances : 5:00 Ballet Folklorico 6:00 - 7:15 Aztec Drum and Dance 7:30 Aventura Nortena music and outdoor dancing There will be traditional refreshments. Hope to see you there. Adios, Carl Black President MCGS
Hi all, Words to the wise from the SFBAY-CSGA list... comments so far: "it was impossibly slow in downloading, and the printed output was illegible." "I just downloaded a number of pages from the 1830 census and they were much more legible and in .jpg format I could enhance in Photoshop and they now make great printouts. I wouldn't advise subscribing until they have the rest of the census done.." "almost all the images are online, but they are not yet indexed. The process of searching page by page is slow, but if you have the information from another index it isn't a problem. I would probably recommend waiting until they are all indexed and then pay for your year..." Jana

Hi everyone, Let's see if I can explain here... Usually we have the Nov meeting one week early (the 3rd Wed.) so it is not the eve before Thanksgiving when we are all turkey wrestling :) so I scheduled the meeting for the 21st... Then Stephanie suggested I actually look at the calendar to note that this year, the first day of Nov is a Thursday which makes Thanksgiving actually fall on the 22nd (4th Thurs) tho the 21st is the 3rd Wed.... got that? So, to be sure we honor "turkey wrestling" first, we have moved the meeting date to its usual spot of the 4th Wednesday, one week AFTER Thankgsgiving...... Got that :) :) :) Jana Black Program Chair (rolling her eyes to the heavens....) -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, October 08, 2001 8:41 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [MarinGenSoc] Correction to Correction Sorry, but the correct date for the November meeting is actually November 28, 2001. ==== MarinGenSoc Mailing List ==== For answers to your questions about the CD ROM research library go here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~camargs/cd_faq.html

Queries should be sent to her at [email protected] The corrected e-mail address appears in the text below. General Meeting November 21, 2001 7:30 PM "American First, Scottish Always" Presentation by Cal and Lauren Boyd of MCGS Join us for an evening of discovery of your Scottish roots. Learn which Clan or District your Family name may be associated with. Do you really descend from Mary Queen of Scots? Is there a Family Crest? A tip or two about Scottish attire and "protocol" will be shared. Cal and Lauren, genealogists for Scottish Clans will show you how to plan, using the Internet, travel to the Ancestral lands of your Kith and Kin. You will be given research sources in Scotland, how to be in touch with Clan genealogists and where and when the Scottish Games are held here in California. They will have research books on hand for you to browse through. Cal and Lauren have requested that those planning on attending who would like to know a bit about their Scottish Surnames and where their ancestors may have lived in Scotland send them an e-mail ([email protected] or [email protected]) in advance of the meeting. This will allow time to prepare some information for you and take less time with lookups at the meeting. Cal Boyd has been Genealogist for House of Boyd Society for seven years. Lauren Boyd, Immediate Past President of the Marin County Genealogical Society, has been President of the House of Boyd Society since 1999, Vice President of the Scottish Information Society since 2000, and Chair of the Genealogical Committee for Clan Stewart Society in America since 1996. Lauren and Cal host the Clan tent at the Scottish Games in Northern California about 13 times per year beginning in March with the Calaveras Celtic Festival. The final event for them for the year is a Kirkin' o' the Tartan in Sacramento in late October, early November each year. In the past two years they have traveled on clan business to Stone Moutain, GA; Alexandria, VA; Grandfather Mountain, NC; and Estes Park, CO. They have also, in February/March of this year traveled to Scotland and visited the Ancestral lands of the Boyds.

Dear Listmembers: It's official! October is now "Family History Month." Happy Trails, Lauren Press Release of Senator Hatch SENATE PASSES HATCH BILL TO COMMEMORATE OCTOBER 2001 AS FAMILY HISTORY MONTH Contact: Christopher Rosché - 202.224.9851 Wednesday, September 26, 2001 WASHINGTON - By unanimous consent, the Senate today approved legislation introduced by Sen. Orrin G. Hatch to designate October as "Family History Month." "Millions of Americans are researching the history of their families," said the Utah Republican. "Experts say that in the United States, genealogy is now the second most popular hobby next to gardening. It is believed that more that 80 million Americans are currently actively searching for more information about their ancestors. "It is only natural that we want to find out more about our ancestors," Hatch continued. "What better way to bring families closer together than by discovering more about the story of their own family? Like it or not, who we are today is in large part, a product of our ancestors. Hatch's bill (S.R. 160), which was co-sponsored by Robert Bennett (R-Utah), commemorates October as Family History Month and encourages President Bush to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe the month of October with appropriate ceremonies and activities. "With the advent of the Internet, there has been an explosion of interest in family history," Hatch continued. "Last month alone, more than 14 million Americans used the Internet to research their family history. Genealogy Internet sites are some of the most popular sites on the World Wide Web. My church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has family history information on nearly 500 million individuals on its family history web site (www.familysearch.com)." "Essentially, we are all immigrants to this country. Our ancestors came from different parts of the globe," Hatch said. "By searching for our roots, we come closer together as a human family. S.R. 160 had 84 co-sponsors and was approved by unanimous consent. "Researching ancestry is a very important component of identity. It can lead to long-sought-after family reunions or allow for life saving medical treatments that only genetic links will allow," Hatch said. Hi everyone, IF this is not new, it is new to me.... AND very exciting! Hello Sir Francis Drake Fans! AS many of you who came to the last MCGS Meeting heard, Carl and I were invited to participate in a Project to determine whether SF Drake actually landed at Bolinas' Agate Beach.... progress on the Project is being made. AS we mentioned, it is quite likely that a number of English sailors were left behind and intermarried with the Miwok or other Indigenous Natives in California. I have posted a list of the names of these folks on our Marin County Gen Web site here: http://www.cagenweb.com/marin/nova_albion_project.htm There will be a meeting of the Ethnographic Committee at Marin Art and Garden Center between 1-4 PM this coming Saturday. If you are interested, SHOW UP! There will be signs directing you from the Parking Lot. The Ethnographic portion of the Research is right up a genealogists alley! Come learn how to interview to get results! Jana Black Program Chair
