    1. [MarinGenSoc] The Genealogy Angel
    2. This was sent to me by a genealogy "cousin" and I thought you might enjoy it. I thought it was rather neat and should be passed on to all of you. I've often wondered why I got the "genealogy bug" and no one else in my family seems to care as much ...they look at me blankly as I, off the top of my head, run down the family tree from the 1700s to present to explain how we're related to some guy in California that I met on the net. LOL …. THE GENEALOGY ANGEL by Patty Whitney Gravois It happens suddenly, without warning! You are going about your own business when-----BAM!!------your life is changed forever. You are no longer able to resist the strong desire to do something you have never really thought about doing before. You suddenly want to spend all of your time with books, computers, newspapers, old photographs, and lots and lots of dead people. You start to enjoy going to old courthouses and cemeteries. What has happened to you? Are you crazy? How can your life be changed so drastically so suddenly? Well, you are not really crazy, although some people might think so. You have just been selected to be the "THE FAMILY HISTORIAN." It has become my personal philosophy that there is a genealogy angel out there whose sole job is to select one person (or maybe two) to be in charge of protecting and recording each family's history. It seems that God finds family groups to be very important. After all, a lot of the first part of the Bible deals with who begat whom. (Begat sort of means "Who's yo' mama?"--or thereabouts). Adam and Eve are going to be the only people in Paradise who don't have a belly button. Everyone else was begat by someone. Keeping track of who begat whom was probably not a problem at first. Families sort of stuck together. As the world's population grew and families kept expanding, someone had to keep a record of who belonged with what family. St. Peter probably started keeping records because no one on Earth knew how to read or write yet. Oral histories were passed on and people kept pretty good track of their families' oral histories because there was nothing else to do at night and in the rain and snow but talk about the family. Gradually, though, the world continued to expand. Writing was invented, and then reading was invented so people could understand the writing. Some people wrote down who was their family, but others didn't see the point. As people moved around a lot, sometimes families were separated and family histories were lost. Not everyone knew how to read and write. Oral histories were lost. For hundreds of years family histories were lost when the grim reaper claimed those who held the lore in their heads. Then, I think, St. Peter decided to do something about the shameless lack of respect for roots and family history. Each family was to have someone who would become totally focused on capturing and recording the begats of each family. These Family Historians would have the job not only of collecting the present day family into groups and recording their histories, but also of trying to undo some of the neglect of the past. So, don't be surprised if one day you are minding your own business and you suddenly feel a tap on the shoulder but when you look around there is no one there. It is simply the genealogy angel tapping you on the back to say, "You're it." From that day forward you won't be able to help yourself. You are going to have to take on the very important job of Family Historian. Do it well.

    1. [MarinGenSoc] OFF TOPIC: HUMOR: The Night of Thanksgiving
    2. Lauren Boyd
    3. Dear listers: Following my other post, someone from one of the lists I admin sent me this saying, "One good poem deserves another." Happy Turkey Day to all, Lauren List Admin .................................. A thanksgiving poem... 'Twas the night of thanksgiving, but I just couldn't sleep. I tried counting backwards, I tried counting sheep. The leftovers beckoned - the dark meat and white, But I fought the temptation with all of my might. Tossing and turning with anticipation, The thought of a snack became infatuation. So, I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door And gazed at the fridge, full of goodies galore. I gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes, Pickles and carrots, beans and tomatoes. I felt myself swelling so plump and so round, 'Til all of a sudden, I rose off the ground. I crashed through the ceiling, floating into the sky With a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie. But, I managed to yell as I soared past the trees.... Happy eating to all - pass the cranberries, please. May your stuffing be tasty, may your turkey be plump. May your potatoes 'n gravy have nary a lump, may your yams be delicious may your pies take the prize, may your thanksgiving dinner stay off of your thighs. May your thanksgiving be great (and safe)!!

I have appropriately bleeped by use of ** a word that you can all figure out, but should not be archived! If you have not had the experience of preparing Thanksgiving dinner -- this gives a fairly accurate perspective... at least in my experience! Cheers! Happy Holidays, Lauren List Admin ................................ THE NIGHT BEFORE THANKSGIVING Twas the night before Thanksgiving and all through the kitchen; I was cooking and baking and moanin' and bitchin'. I've been here for hours, I can't stop to rest, This place is a disaster, just look at this mess! Tomorrow I've got thirty people to feed, They expect all the trimmings...who cares what I need! My feet are both blistered, I've got cramps in my legs, The dog just knocked over a bowl full of eggs. There's a knock at the door and the telephone's ringing; Frosting drips on the counter as the microwave's dinging. Two pies in the oven, dessert's almost done; My cookbook is soiled with butter and crumbs. I've had all I can stand, I can't take anymore; Then walks in my husband, spill ing rum on the floor. He heaves and he wobbles, his balance unsteady; Then grins as he chuckles "The eggnog is ready!" He looks all around and with total regret, Says "What's takin' so long? Aren't you through in here yet??" As quick as a flash I reach for a knife; He loses an earlobe; I wanted his life! He flees from the room in terror and pain, and screams "MY GOD WOMAN, YOU'RE GOING INSANE!!" Now what was I doing, and what is that smell? Oh, sh**, it's the pies!! They're burned all to hell!! I hate to admit when I make a mistake, But I put them on BROIL instead of on BAKE. What else can go wrong?? Is there still more ahead?? If this is good living, I'd rather be dead. Lord, don't get me wrong, I love holidays; They just leave me exhausted, all shaky and dazed. But I promise you one t hing, If I live 'til next year, You won't find me pulling my hair out in here. I'll hire a maid, a cook, and a waiter; And if that doesn't work, I'LL HAVE IT ALL CATERED!

    2. Lauren Boyd
    3. Dear Listers: I received this from another list I belong to. I looked into having this man lecture to MCGS when I was 1stVP and in charge of programs. We could not afford his fee! I encourage all interested in Scottish genealogy to take advantage of this lecture if you can. I understand him to be an excellent speaker. Perhaps those who attend could give feedback to Susan to see if NCGS might have him lecture at our location. Maybe things have changed and the budget may have expanded since my term in office. :) As we say..... 3. Dear Listers: Forwarding the following at the request of Esther Kooiman, President, Marin County Genealogical Society. Happy Trails, Lauren List Admin MarinGenSoc-L ................................... Subject: Gen Seminar Announcement Date: Mon, 11 Nov 2002 12:39:47 -0800 To: [email protected] ************** Announcing the San Luis Obispo County Genealogical Society Annual Seminar -- and special email-only discount! This event will take take place on Saturday, February 1, 2003. We have two world-class speakers, Hank Jones and Richard Wilson, in addition to lots of local talent. Hank Jones, author of Psychic Roots: Serendity & Intuition in Genealogy Research, is one of only 50 Fellows of the American Society of Genealogy. He's knowledgeable, entertaining, and inspirational. Richard Wilson, our digital guru, heads up the California portion of USGenWeb. Normally, you could only hear these individuals at expensive nationwide conferences. . . . so, organize those carpools, and don’t miss this very reasonably priced one-day event in charming San Luis Obispo, near Pismo Beach on the 101 Freeway, halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Last year, with our expanded program, we drew about 250 participants. We expect 300 this year. Come join a large, enthusiastic gathering of fellow family historians - without the crowds and parking hassles we all associate with large conferences. Extras include complete syllabus, freebie table, raffle, family history displays, and more! For more information and registration forms, see the San Luis Obispo County Genealogical Society website http://www.slonet.org/~slogen/. Email special only: we will give a 10% discount to FIVE OR MORE paid pre-registrations received together in the same mailing from outside our society. This 10% discount reduces the non-SLOCGS-member per-person registration from $27 to $24 per person. Mention code "group visitor discount -- _____________" on each of the five or more registration forms; please name the society or city/county in the blank.

    1. [MarinGenSoc] Announcement: TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF THE ALLEN COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY'S GENEALOGY DEPARTMENT
    2. Lauren Boyd
    3. Dear Cousins/Listers: Passing along a notice of interest to any who may be considering a trip to this wonderful and renowned library. The ACPL publishes PERSI -- an index to periodicals. Kind Regards, Lauren List Admin Various lists..... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF THE ALLEN COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY'S GENEALOGY DEPARTMENT ================================================== The following announcement has been issued by the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana: The Historical Genealogy Department of the Allen County Public Library will close for relocation on Saturday, 14 December 2002, at 6:00 PM. The department will remain closed through the month of January 2003. This is to allow time to move all our materials to our interim location. The current building will be going through renovation and expansion. Will materials be available? All our research materials will be available up until Saturday, December 14, at 6:00 PM. At that time the department will be closed so we can move all our materials to our interim location. When the library opens at that location, we will have all our books, microforms and periodicals ready for research. Why will we be closed? Closing the department will allow us to move the whole collection at once instead of doing it piecemeal. This will ensure that the materials you are coming to Fort Wayne to use for your research will be available when you arrive, offering the full collection for our researchers. If we moved pockets of materials, what you needed for your research might not be available. By moving the whole collection at once it will ensure that the materials you are interested in will be available until we close on December 14th, and when we reopen in late January 2003. Where will the interim location be? The interim location of the Allen County Public Library will be at 200 East Berry St., Fort Wayne, Indiana. Locally, it is called Renaissance Square. It is 5 blocks to the east from the current library. There will be limited free parking available; there is also a pay parking garage across the street and more than 150 metered spaces in close proximity. What will the interim location be like? One of the most exciting things about our interim location is that the genealogy collection will be a browsing collection. All the materials will be out and available for the researcher to retrieve them. Materials will not have to be paged; the shelves will be open. How long will we be in the interim location? The projected time frame is 2-3 years. How can I find out more information? Visiting the library web site http://www.acpl.lib.in.us or phoning the department at 260-421-1225 is the best way to get current relocation information. This is a very exciting time for all of us, librarians and researchers alike. Our goal is to keep our patrons informed and continue to offer the highest level of customer service possible now, in our interim location, and in our newly renovated library. For further contact, please phone the department or email Curt Witcher, Manager, Historical Genealogy Department-ACPL at [email protected] or Susan Kaufman Tavenner, Librarian, Historical Genealogy Department-ACPL at [email protected] Posted with permission: Curt Witcher, Manager, Historical Genealogy Department Susan Kaufman Tavenner, Librarian, Historical Genealogy Department

Dear Listers: As the November meeting is just a week before Thanksgiving... and it is a Show and Tell opportunity... perhaps some of the things that we could share would be family recipes used for this holiday dinner? We could swap them and maybe add something different to our traditional dinners. I might also suggest that if you have recently found a good book -- that is also something you can share about your current research. Just a thought.... Happy Trails, Lauren

    3. Dear Listers: Due to time constraints, I was only able to attend John Trumbull's excellent lecture on the care and feeding of gravestones. I would like to hear from others about the lectures they attended. What did you learn? How did the presentation go? What did I miss? To post to this list use the address [email protected] Or -- respond to my message and hit "reply all" and delete my address so that I don't get two messages. The default reply on this list goes to the sender only. I think the other listmembers would benefit by reading what you have to say. Thanks again, Susan, for all your efforts and hard work in not only pulling together and facilitating this annual workshop, but for also finding the time to present a lecture! Happy Trails, Lauren

    3. Dear Listers: I had intended to attend this meeting, but somehow I missed it. Would some of those who attended please share details with fellow listmembers? Perhaps it will encourage others to go next time. John -- thanks for all you do in coordinating and facilitating these meetings. I know what a job that can be! Was there a list of topics developed for upcoming meetings? Perhaps posting them to the list would be helpful. Also -- any of the listmembers that have suggestions for future meeting topics for the Computer Interest Group can post them here or send directly to John. I am sure he would be interested to hear what they may be and could plan to get them into the schedule of upcoming meetings. If you have not attended the Computer Interest Group meeting before -- it can be very intersting. The meeting location is quite nice and we are fortunate to have it. I am looking forward to seeing your messages on the list. send them to [email protected] Happy Trails, Lauren John Deadman wrote: > > The computer interest group will meet 10:00 A M - Sat.
