The MCGS third annual "Bloodlines and Lovelines" family history essay contest for Marin's K-12 students has just concluded. Forty seven students turned in essays and the winners will read their essays at our Wednesday, January 28 meeting (7:30 p.m.). Five of these winning essays were reprinted in the Sunday, January 11, Marin Independent Journal on the editorial page. We hope many MCGS members will join the students and their families at this event. Jerry D. Moore, Publicity Chairperson
Jo Ann, Lauren & John: After receiving your input and that of our CIG members, I have our list of topics for 2004 and locations ready for distribution. Please review these and send me your comments/suggestions. I would like to publish this at our meeting on 1/17/03. There are ten (10) topics listed which will cover our ten (10) meetings for 2004. These are not set in concrete and we can modify as needed. Based on the consensus at the meetings, we will continue to have our meetings at both Villa Marin and MCF (Hamilton) on Sat. & Thurs. (switch every other month). I've updated the topics and who will make the presentation so please review them carefully and let me know if there is an error or if you want to change something. I'm flexible and we can make adjustments as needed. There was no specific rationale for setting topics on specific dates other than trying to meet your requests and to imagine which topics would be better presented at MCF vs. Villa Marin. Thank you. Dear Listers: Many of you may not be familiar and many may not yet be in the habit. However, it is a good idea to check the Rootsweb Help Desk site with some regularity. http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com There are many helpful and informative messages posted there from Rootsweb Staff/Help Desk Folks from time to time. If something seems not to be "working right", this is the first place to look and see if there is a big yellow notice about the issue. There are several messages there currently that may be of interest to you. There is a notice about maintenance that is to begin tomorrow (6 Jan 2004 -- Utah, USA date, for the Aussies, etc. among us) that will affect the Bulletin Boards and World Connect areas. The Bulletin Boards are viewed from several areas at once -- ie Ancestry, MSN, etc. As such the server that houses them for all locations will be down for maintenance. If you use these resources, please take a minute to go read the Official Announcement. And if you do not use those resources, you may be interested in the other announcements that may affect you or others you correspond with. As I have mentioned before.... I do not always draw your attention to these messages. It is a good idea to visit the site with some regularity on your own so you remain as informed as possible about issues that may affect your quality of experience with Rootsweb's resources. If you have not already, you may want to book mark or add to favorites the URL for the Help Desk. Kind Regards, Lauren List Admin
Dear Listers and Fellow Marin County Genealogical Society Members: I noticed a while back that the browsable archives for our list did not show our full history. While we could search all the messages using the interactive archives, we were missing some 3 yrs worth of messages in the browsable archives. I mentioned this to Andrew, the current List Master at Rootsweb, and it went on the back burner as he has been swamped with things that clearly have higher priority. Well, this morning when I logged on to my computer, there was a message from Drew blinking at me. :) He has restored/rebuilt our browsable archives to include the full span of the history of the list. We have just passed our 5th Anniversary for this list this month. From what I can tell, the earliest message was posted on 12 December 1998. Happy Anniversary to all of you! As I said in my Holiday Message for 1998: Happy Channukah! Merry Christmas! Happy Winter Solstice! And even Happy Birthday to some of us! See y'all next year, Lauren

The Investors Daily of Dec 4th, 2003 has an interesting article about improving the Soundex to take care of Asian, near Eastern names, etc. to be used for Air Line Checks, double-booked reservations, etc. Soundex was used for Geneologist and law enforcement. the system and data base is sold to the Governemnt, air lines . I thought it was interesting how this had developed. A THANKSGIVING PRAYER FROM THE IROQUOIS (SENECA) PEOPLE Gwa! Gwa! Gwa! Now the time has come! Hear us, Lord of the Sky! We are here to speak the truth, for you do not hear lies, We are your children, Lord of the Sky. Now begins the Gayant' gogwus This sacred fire and sacred tobacco And through this smoke We offer our prayers We are your children, Lord of the Sky. Now in the beginning of all things You provided that we inherit your creation You said: I shall make the earth on which people shall live And they shall look to the earth as their mother And they shall say, "It is she who supports us." You said that we should always be thankful For our earth and for each other So it is that we are gathered here We are your children, Lord of the Sky. Now again the smoke rises And again we offer prayers You said that food should be placed beside us And it should be ours in exchange for our labor. You thought that ours should be a world where green grass of many kinds should grow You said that some should be medicines And that one should be Ona'o the sacred food, our sister corn You gave to her two clinging sisters beautiful Oa'geta, our sister beans and bountiful Nyo'sowane, our sister squash The three sacred sisters; they who sustain us. This is what you thought, Lord of the Sky. Thus did you think to provide for us And you ordered that when the warm season comes, That we should see the return of life And remember you, and be thankful, and gather here by the sacred fire. So now again the smoke arises We the people offer our prayers We speak to you through the rising smoke We are thankful, Lord of the Sky. (Liberally translated) Chuck Larsen, Seneca

Callifornia DHS UPDATE: Department of Health Services Public Count will be closed as of November 25, 2003 due to Budget Cuts. Officially, last Friday, the administrative order was announced that the Counter will be closed to walk-in applications for vital records and six Department employees will be reassigned. Budget 'cuts to the bone' are cited as the reason the Department of Health Services management has decided that the Public Counter should be closed, in spite of the fact that this is one of the operations that brings revenue into the Department. The reasons, we can all speculate upon, but the fact is that this move will not only affect genealogist and researchers, but the public in general. This includes those who need to obtain birth certificates for children beginning school, college registration, and passports. The one light at the end of the tunnel is that most California County offices will continue to be open for walk-in requests for birth, death, marriage, divorce documents. The Dapartment states that the turn-around time will be four weeks. What, if anything, can be done about this remains to be seen. It is hopeful that with the change of Administration in the Governor's office and new appointees, we may see changes in policy. At this point we can only wait and see. We will continue to monitor the situation. If and when efforts on our part could make a difference, I will let you know. I will stay on top of this problem. Dear List Members, An interesting new website was forwarded to me that is a "universal register of all the world's genealogical resources, whether Net-based or not, and whether free or fee-paying." I tested the site with a couple of surnames and got impressive results. Kathy -----Original Message----- There is a new website that has a nice idea - it takes Gen info from many different web sites and then combines/ recombines the data into a nice structered 11 column line chart, allowing 20 families to be combined on a single screen/ page for a quick assessment of whether/which of the 20 families is one you wish to examine, see unstructered page below. Any surname is avail by simply going to the website (http://www.geneanet.org/) and entering a search for whatever surname you wish. The email address for each family is also included w/each Surname (1st Col) for your follow up. There is one feature of mixed blessing - there appears to be a non-US preference or bias of the database. That is good because there is less duplication w/, for example, RootsWeb databases, but also suggesting this database may not yet be fully activated - still, w/559 'Hits' for my surname, the potential is there. There is some duplication also.
forwarding for Ken again. :) Lauren -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: [Fwd: Re: [MarinGenSoc] Veterans - Lest We Forget!] Date: Wed, 12 Nov 2003 23:43:59 -0800 From: Ken Wiltz <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Lauren, Besides the correction of the date of Oct. 1944. What I remember about the POWs was their wounds, the plastic surgery that was done on faces and other parts of their bodies. I had to list all wounds and that was a tough part of interviewing the POWs. I also interviewed Navajo Code Talkers, some who were on TV last night, only 4 still alive out of the 29 who served as Code Talkers, using Navajo language in a way that they themselves designed so that the Japanese could not understand it. Messages were sent to a Code Talker in English, he translated and sent it in Morse Code or voice and it was received by another Code Talker who translated the message into English for his unit. This was a big help to the 7 Marine Divisions in the South Pacific battles. Ken Wiltz .
Hi: I think Ken meant to post his reply to the list, not just to me. Thank you, Ken, for your service to our Country. The work you did at the shipyards before you "joined up" was equally important to the War Effort, I am sure. It must have been both difficult and interesting to interview those that had been Prisoners of War. I will never forget the tale my old insurance agent, Gerald Fitzgerald, told me of being in a German Prisoner of War Camp and how he had survived. God Bless the officer's wife that left mashed potatoes on the back porch for him every time he mowed the lawn. He and his men owe their very lives to her. Date: Tue, 11 Nov 2003 11:58:19 -0800 From: Ken Wiltz <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Lauren, Thank you from a WW II vet. My experience in the US Marines was not like most, as I was one of the 10% who never went overseas. After working in the Kaiser Permanente Shipyard No. 2 in Richmond, CA from September 1941 to January 1944 (where I worked on 246 different Liberty Ships) I entered the Marines on March 14, 1944. This was of course late for most had been inducted before this time. I spent time in San Diego, CA boot camp, Camp Miramar (now the training area for Top Guns), went to Corvallis in a DC-3 (Navy C-47) that took 8 hours of flight time with one hour more landing at Sacramento for dinner in July 1945. Took Air Navigation training there until October 1945 when I was shipped back to California where I flunked out of AirNav school in December at El Centro, CA. After that I was an office pinky (that's what they called us) in charge of record books for members of Headquarters Company, Marine Air Group 35. After the war ended September 1945 I was sent to school to learn to interview and assign veteran benefits to those being discharged. The school was back at Camp Miramar. I was sent to Los Angeles where I worked with others in a Marine office in downtown LA getting benefits for veteran Marines. It was surprising to me just how many reenlisted after being discharged. They had 90 days to reenlist and keep their present rank. I was shipped back to San Diego Marine Barracks where I ended my Marine career with the First Separation Company interviewing dischargees especially those who had been prisoners of war in Japan and other places. I was discharged on August 01, 1946 with the rank of Corporal. Not a very exciting tour of duty, but I served none the less.. Ken Wiltz USMCR #824773
Forwarding an important message. Lauren -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [CASonoma] Veterans in Historic Cemeteries Resent-Date: Tue, 11 Nov 2003 01:04:12 -0700 Resent-From: [email protected] Date: Mon, 10 Nov 2003 20:51:43 -0800 From: "Sue Silver" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Greetings, On the eve of Veterans Day I've been reflecting on the many historic cemeteries in which a vast number of our nation's veterans are still buried. Many, many of those cemeteries are in sad states of repair and care with our civil representatives having ignored their plight and condition for many decades now. As you spend your Tuesday with your co-workers, family or friends, please remember your ancestors who fought for our nation. If you are able, please go to a local historic cemetery and see if the cemeteries where our veterans now rest in peace are in the kind of condition you believe they deserve. If they are not in a well maintained cemetery, take the time to call your local representative and ask that some attention be paid to the neglected cemeteries where these veterans now lie for eternity. Ask them if they would want their ancestors to rest in a place that looks so bad or if they believe the resting places of our veterans should be so disrespected. Please ask them to care, and to help us to show respect for the last "homes" of our pioneer citizens and veterans. Respectfully, Sue Silver, State Coordinator California Saving Graves
Dear Listers: November 11 is known as Veterans' Day in the USA. It was originally known as Armistice Day, which marked the end of WWI -- The War to End All Wars. I believe it is called Remembrance Day in other parts of the world. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Veterans among us for their service to their country. And I also invite all of you to post tales or statistics or what have you about either your own experience as a Veteran or to share about the Veterans of any and all wars, conflicts, etc. that may be found in your family tree. We must remember that Genealogy is more than just collecting names and dates of the dead that came before us, but rather who they were, what they did and how they lived. Writing family stories helps others to get to know those that came before us and also honors their memories. Yours Aye, Lauren List Admin
