Hi Valerie, Looks to me as though the Hero didn't travel that far downstream from Canton....possibly a few hundred meters or yards down the River Canton, which comes out into the sea near Hong Kong, although all the names have changed these days. Both Latitude (north - south) and Longitude (east - west) are measured in Degrees, = °, a minute = ' = one Nautical mile or 1.852 km or 1.151 land miles) and a second = " = is about 30 meters or about 100 feet, give or take a bit, so 12 seconds would be about 360 meters = so not even a quarter of a mile, if I've got my maths right ? To find a particular point on the map it is necessary to use both latitude and longitude to find that point. To simply use seconds suggests to me that the vessel only moved the 360 meters down stream from Canton, and rather than carry on downstream to Hong Kong and perhaps have problems with pirate junks on the way he returned to Canton in well protected waters to carry out needy repairs. For the record it is perhaps worth noting that whilst our source will have used degrees, minutes and seconds, the traditional measurements, these days they are often converted directly into decimal measurements. Hi Paul, Thank you for your reply and explanation regard 'being in long.12. I omitted a line in my message which was that the report was from Plymouth Feb 20th and not from Canton. An earlier report in the Morning Post Jan 18th 1837 from Custom House says Cleared outwards with cargo presumable from London. Apologies for mistake in my message. In September 1837 the next report says - 'The 'Hero', Hardy July 5 for Swan River - Departures from Table Bay. Later reports say this ship arrived Mauritius March 1838 having left Swan River the previous December. The ship arrived back in London in June 1838, so repairs must have been good! regards Valerie -----Original Message----- From: Paul Benyon Sent: Thursday, November 14, 2013 8:58 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MAR] 'HERO' 64/5115 Capt Hardy Hi Valerie, Looks to me as though the Hero didn't travel that far downstream from Canton....possibly a few hundred meters or yards down the River Canton, which comes out into the sea near Hong Kong, although all the names have changed these days.
