    3. Hi Maureen I too have ancestors who were boatmen, as well as Coastguards, also a Customs and Excise officer in both Wales and Scotland. I paid National Archives to search for his records, giving all his details and they sent me records of a man of the same name from the south of England. Where did you look to find your husband's ancestor as I think I need to search myself? Kind regards Eunice South Australia -----Original Message----- From: Maureen Ellen via Sent: Monday, September 21, 2015 1:33 PM To: Nivard Ovington ; mariners@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MAR] Boatman ? Hi Nivard, My husband had a boatman ancestor. He served in the coastguard service. It may be worth checking to see if this applied to your man as there was a lot of information about him to be found in the coastguard records. 3. Hi Eunice, I too have coastguard ancestors in eraly Victorian times, and there are a couple of points that occur to me, although you may find these obvious. Firstly, the coastguard service seems to have avoided landlubbers. My coastguard ancestors had RN or MN pasts and records. Secondly, when we got the coastguard record this gave us a source to compare with the Census records bracketing the same date, and then civil records. Thus we have a coastguard record for the Wirral and a census record for New Brighton naming the same man as a coastguard. The children's baptism records agree with the census and the coastguard record. Thus we are fairly happy that we have the right chap.
