    3. Hi, there is a John L Shackford in the 1911 census he is 40 and married to Margaret . They have one dau. He says he was b in Southampton , and he is a ship`s steward. There is a marriage on Freebmd and if you got that , it might well show who he is naming as his father .........not always the truth of course. !!! -----Original Message----- From: Joanne Shackford Parkes via Sent: Sunday, September 20, 2015 3:32 AM To: mariners@rootsweb.com Subject: [MAR] Captain John L Shackford (1819-1872) of Eastport, moved to St Thomas Trying to learn more about the latter years of Captain John L Shackford. In 1847 he was master of the Brig Carryl which travelled from New York to the West Indies. By the 1860s he had moved from Maine to New York where he was listed in directories as a shipmaster. In Feb 1871 his wife Elizabeth S Clark Shackford filed for divorce stating that he had moved to St Thomas about three years earlier and had told acquaintances that he had married there and had at least one daughter. In Dec 1871 John L Shackford died in St Thomas (seems to be listed as Shuckford in that death record.) Looking for guidance on how to find out more about his shipping career and any thoughts on how to find the name of his wife in St Thomas and/or the names of their children. Specifically trying to learn if a John Lincoln Shackford (1872-1917) was his son who was possibly born after he died. Thanks for any help you may offer. 3. Eliz - Thank you very much! John Lincoln Shackford's descendants have this document where John Lincoln Shackford listed a John Shackford as his father. In an earlier document from the 1891 England & Wales Merchant Navy Crew Lists 1861-1913 from the steam ship Orinoco, this John Lincoln Shackford lists his birth location as St Thomas so with two birth locations listed, we assume the earlier document may be more accurate. This document led us to the possibility that his father was Capt John L Shackford (1819-1872) who moved to St Thomas around 1886 abandoning his first wife. This is why we are now trying to learn more about the sailing career of Capt John L Shackford (1819-1871). We've found some newspaper articles listing the Carryl that shows John L Shackford as it's master but then the documentation about which ship he sailed on seems to disappear. Have read that in the 1860s about 4600 ships arrived in St Thomas annually but am unsure how to do more research about sailors or people who lived in St Thomas in the 1868 -1872 timeframe.
