Hello Carolyn, You wrote:"My man is Anthony COMETTI born 1855 in London, and I now have three pieces of conflicting information about him: This one dated 21 April 1870, for 4 years on the vessel Regina, 204 tons, at Hartlepool, Master -J. Hills." Whence came that information? Ancestry? I don't have a sub so can't see the record you have. I looked in online volumes of Lloyd's Register of Shipping for 1870, 1871 and 1872 but see no REGINA with that master. There is a brig that's close in tonnage (202 tons) but she wasn't a coastal collier.http://www.maritimearchives.co.uk/lloyds-register.html If he had been apprenticed to the master, rather than the owner(s), that begs a question I have been meaning to ask this list:Q? If the merchant navy apprentice is indentured to the master, rather than to the owner(s), does that mean that the apprentice also changes ships when the master changes employers? Do you have an Official Number for that REGINA? Because if yes, you could try to find her 1871 crew lists to see if there is any notation against Anthony Cometti's name about him deserting or being discharged. A good place to start that hunt is the CLIP (Crew List Indexing Project) website:http://www.crewlist.org.uk/data/vesselsalphaview.php?Name=REGINA&SearchType=Exact Regards,Adi
Looked in vain for a REGINA registered at Hartlepool, but note that the reference is "at" rather than "of" Hartlepool. This one looks the most likely, but does not appear in Lloyd's Register: Brig REGINA - 205 tons - Official Number 2656, registered at London Built 1845 at Prince Edward Island, Canada In 1870 listed in Mercantile Navy List as owned by William E Fielding, Davis's Wharf, Tooley Street, Southwark. (that is not necessarily inconsistent with being owned by "J Hills", as vessels typically had more than one holder of shares of 64ths, and MNL only shows one - usually the appointed manager and not always the largest shareholder) This REGINA looks like a collier as William Fielding was a coal merchant operating from Davis's Wharf see http://tinyurl.com/pgxt96k By 1875 MNL owned by Richard McSheen, Great Grimsby and registered there (and by then only 185 tons) Ipswich Journal, Tuesday 20 Oct 1875: Lowestoft Shipping Intelligence: Between six and seven o'clock on Saturday evening, during a strong wind, the brig Regina, Young, master, of Grimsby, got on shore been Pakefield and Kessingland. The crew were rescued by the Kessiingland coastguard with the rocket apparatus and brought to the Sailors Home, Lowestoft. The vessel will become a total wreck. She was from Boulogne for Hull, ballast. best wishes DAvid On Tue, Sep 22, 2015 at 7:27 AM, Mme_N_Carmichael via <mariners@rootsweb.com > wrote: > Hello Carolyn, > You wrote:"My man is Anthony COMETTI born 1855 in London, and I now have > three pieces > of conflicting information about him: > This one dated 21 April 1870, for 4 years on the vessel Regina, 204 tons, > at Hartlepool, Master -J.
