Sorry Paul, I really don't know. If I had to guess, it would be that as a bankrupt he probably wouldn't be disqualified from acting as a master, but he might find it difficult to find work as one if his erstwhile bosses didn't give him another ship. This might not be so much a matter of his being disqualified as the mud of the collision sticking, so to speak. He might find a position as a mate, or in extremis, as an AB, but it could be tricky to track him down. I haven't tried looking up the Acts of Parliament relating to masters at this time which may provide an answer - try old Google books under the heading "merchant shipping" Bankruptcy being a legal process, I would have thought that Court records for the relevant state would be the place to look. He isn't in the London Gazette between 1890 and 1920, as far as I could see, so presumably his Australian bankruptcy didn't have to be registered in the UK. I don't know whether you have found this Queensland page, but it may be worth your poking around it: http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/research/indexes.asp Were you still looking for his date and place of death? My search on Trove just now to check the name turned up the Morning Bulletin of Rockhampton, Tuesday, August 21st 1906 contains a notice about a meeting of the creditors of the estate of Charles Teft Lawrence, Master Mariner, which suggests that he had recently died. Incidentally, have you found the newspaper report concerning a case involving a Charles STEEL Lawrence in 1893? Both are master mariners, and both seem to work for Reids - it would be odd if they employed TWO Captain Charles Lawrences. I can't see a Charles S Lawrence in Lloyds Captains register and just wondered whether we had an example of the reporter having got his name down wrong. After all, if you Google "Charles Teft Lawrence" one is offered "Charles THEFT Lawrence", so by the same token, maybe the reporter thought "Theft" and put down "Steal"! Anyway if it is him, he also appears to have commanded the steamer PIONEER. You have given me plenty of leads to follow up that I am on with now. I want to find out what happened to him after his insolvency in 1900. Would it have affected his position as Captain of a vessel? Would he be discharged, and if so would the record of this be with the shipping company he worked for, or be registered in England? I had noted the bump with the Elginshire, but forgot to include it in my request.
