In 1846, J R Middleton described himself as a master mariner on his daughter’s baptism record in India. Another reference to him said he was a Captain in the Honourable East India Company’s Service. He was born in 1809, so possibly arrived in India c1829. He married Louisa Leigh in 1834, left India in 1836, and returned in 1844, where he remained until his death in 1865.
