Finally, she was one of a number of vessels driven on shore in Carlisle Bay, Barbadoes, sailing from Newfoundland, during a hurricane on the 11th August 1831. This was reported in the Liverpool Mercury of the 7th October. Alliance's listing ceases in Lloyd's Register after this date, so she was presumably a total loss. Is there an index of ship names? Is there an index of people names? I can find only three libraries here with copies. Two are at universities which do not participate in 'inter-library loan' and the? third is Toronto Public Library which has it tagged as 'Reference" and will also not loan it (even though they have two copies). I've checked into buying a copy, but the prices are off-putting when I am only on a 'fishing expedition' and don't know for sure if any of 'mine' will be mentioned there. If the Index is comprehensive, I will chance annoying a professor acquaintance at U of T with a request to take out the book and photocopy the index for me, and later possibly to photocopy some relevant pages. [Aside: That is what I had to do with Graham Farr's "Bristol Ships". While I can understand the universities' position, it was immensely frustrating to learn that I was the first person to want to take out that book since U of T acquired it - '55 years!!!!' earlier. Hello Lisa, If you happen to know, it might be helpful to know what nationality these vessels will have been, and when approximately they were sailing. A Cornelia Lawrence was reported in the British newspapers between 1855 and 1860. A barque of that name was off Liverpool from New York in early April 1855, under a Captain Knapp, and sailing for New York again in early June, and she arrived back again at Liverpool on October 5th. There are similar trips between Liverpool and New York in April/May 1856, arriving New York 29th June. Still sailing under Captain Knapp she left Liverpool again in December 1857 for Mobile, arriving back in Liverpool 26 April 1858. In the Belfast Newsletter of 30 April 1858 she was referred to as a "packet ship" that had arrived New York on the 22 March. Further references cease with the American Civil War, although "the English brig Cornelia Lawrence" was reported as having been seen at lat. 41.40, long. 64.43, about 500 miles due east of Philadelphia in May 1861. No Cornelia Lawrence appears in Lloyd's Registers for that period, nor is a vessel of that name listed among British registered vessels nor American ships allocated signal flags in the Mercantile Navy Lists of 1859/60. An Alexander M. Lawrence remains elusive. Is there an index of ship names? Is there an index of people names? I can find only three libraries here with copies. Two are at universities which do not participate in 'inter-library loan' and the? third is Toronto Public Library which has it tagged as 'Reference" and will also not loan it (even though they have two copies). I've checked into buying a copy, but the prices are off-putting when I am only on a 'fishing expedition' and don't know for sure if any of 'mine' will be mentioned there. If the Index is comprehensive, I will chance annoying a professor acquaintance at U of T with a request to take out the book and photocopy the index for me, and later possibly to photocopy some relevant pages. [Aside: That is what I had to do with Graham Farr's "Bristol Ships". While I can understand the universities' position, it was immensely frustrating to learn that I was the first person to want to take out that book since U of T acquired it - '55 years!!!!' earlier.
