The 1867 Directory DOES list him as a pilot at Swatow - the entries are not all in alphabetical order and I didn't realise I needed to keep looking through the Johnsons. This makes much more sense than that he should suddenly become a clerk. However it means there were TWO H Johnsons around in China by 1867!
