Hi Mick, Further to my last, written late at night, I can confirm that Lewis' Topographical Dictionary of Scotland of 1846 is the source for the statement that at Limekilns shipbuilding was "carried on to a moderate extent". Pigot's Directory of Scotland for 1837 notes two shipbuilders in the area - John Miller at Limekilns, and James Whyte at Charlestown. Miller was a certainly well established by 1828, and was a subscriber to Peter Hedderwick's Treatise on Marine Architecture in 1830; but in 1842 his property was seized under Scottish sequestration laws, presumably to settle his debts, and the shipbuilding industry at Limekilns may well have been in difficulties.
