    1. [MAR] Farrell Lines ship AFRICAN PILOT

    3. To whom it may concern : Two others and myself were rescued by the AFRICAN PILOT on Sept. 23, 1961 in the Atlantic, about 180 miles N. of Bermuda, subsequent to a U.S. Navy aircraft accident on Sept 22, 1961. I am searching for anyone that may have been a crewman on subject ship, plus photos of the ship. If there is an interest, I can E-mail information concerning the Rescue. I am trying to gather as much information and pictures as possible, to hand down to my children and grand children. Since I am the only living survivor, I feel that all will be lost if my quest is not fufilled. I stumbled across your site while searching for pictures of the AFRICAN PILOT. I am in contact with the son of the the AFRICAN PILOT Captain, Arthur Knight, recently deceased. I am a retired (1975) veteran from the US Navy and served aboard the USS HORNET (CVS-12) and USS CORAL SEA (CVA-43). I appreciate your time in reading my post. Thank you for your time. V/R, PJ Imhof

    3. Hi PJ, There doesn't appear to be a photo on line, but your best source is probably the Steamship Historical Society of America - see http://www.sshsa.org/ They hold a huge archive of American ship photos. African Pilot was built in 1944 as the Mandarin for U.S. War Shipping Admin, San Francisco by Moore DD Co, Oakland, Calif. In 1948 she was sold to Farrell Line, New York and renamed African Pilot. 1963 returned to U.S. Department of Commerce and laid up. 1974 scrapped at Brownsville, Texas. There is a full account of the rescue at http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:P031whXWFP4J:http://www.ss346.com/PDFs/ImhofRescue1961.pdf regards Ted ----- Original Message ----- From: "PJ Imhof" <daddypaddy@att.net> To: <MARINERS@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 01, 2011 3:20 AM Subject: [MAR] Farrell Lines ship AFRICAN PILOT > > To whom it may concern : > Two others and myself were rescued by the AFRICAN PILOT on Sept. 23, 1961 > in the Atlantic, about 180 miles N. of Bermuda, subsequent to a U.S. Navy > aircraft accident on Sept 22, 1961. > I am searching for anyone that may have been a crewman on subject ship, > plus photos of the ship. > If there is an interest, I can E-mail information concerning the Rescue. > I am trying to gather as much information and pictures as possible, to > hand down to my children and grand children. > Since I am the only living survivor, I feel that all will be lost if my > quest is not fufilled. > I stumbled across your site while searching for pictures of the AFRICAN > PILOT.
