Hi Everyone I am wanting to find out more about the above person. He was born in Rye in the late 1800's and ran away from home to be a deck boy on the Oregon which sailed around Cape Horn to Valparaiso. At 28 he received his master's ticket and his first command was on a brigantine taking firewood from Baltic countries to England. He ended up in Sydney Australia during the 1914-18 war. He joined the army and returned to Sydney after the war was over. Captain Maitland also made the bell rope for King George V1 and later one for Lord Mountbatten. One bell rope went to the Britannia and the other one we are told in the Royal Naval Boy's Training Establishment as a specimen of work done in the old days and an inspiration for the young ones. He was also known as John Maitland and he was also an author of short stories and had a book published about his adventures around the top of Australia. He was into everything from hunting for gold in Bolivia to pearl diving in New Guinea. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Wendy Cook Wagga Wagga NSW Australia.
