I came down here to (PHILIPPINES) with my family for a short vacation but unfortunately, we were mugged and robbed at the park of the hotel where we stayed. All cash, credit cards and cell phones were stolen off us but we still have our lives and passports. We've been to the embassy and the police here and they have done the best they can. Our flight leaves in less than 12hrs from now but we are having problems settling the hotel bills and the hotel manager won't let us leave until we settle the bills. I am contacting you to ask for a short loan which I will refund immediately I get my family back home safely. Let me know if you can help. Looking forward to positive response. Some free databases are: Trove, Australia - https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper PapersPast, New Zealand - http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast Chronicling America, USA - http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/newspapers/ It does cost to read articles in the British Newspaper Archive http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/ but you can search there for free and get as far as the thumbnails. They sell short-term subscriptions. The usual format for names in the shipping news is: [Vessel name COMMA master Surname] so searching for "LIGHTNING, Byrne" brings up lots of ads giving her tonnage and sailing dates. (The quotation marks indicate that you want instances where those two words occur in that order.) LIGHTNING was a Black Ball Line vessel. Using this search term (with the quotation marks, but without the square brackets) ["Black Ball Line" Lightning Byrne] will get you building details, images and hits mentioning your man, like this one: http://www.shippingwondersoftheworld.com/wpimages/wp63123471_06.png Try that with all the vessel names you have so far. Hello Angela, Further to my last posting, at the subsequent Court Martial held at Portsmouth on board HMS Gladiator on the 26 August 1799, it was reported that a total of eleven seamen had died on the Ambuscade, in addition to the 1st Lieutenant and the Master.  Their names are not given in the reports, but presumably a further three men died of their wounds subsequent to the newspaper report printed in January, bringing the total dead to 13. Hi Angela, Since the Ambuscade was captured by the French the chances of her Musters and Pay Lists, which would normally have detailed who was on board and the casualties sustained, having survived are remote to say the least. The Musters cease on 31 Oct 1798, which suggests that those in use when the ship was captured are not held by Kew : Admiralty: Royal Navy Ships' Musters (Series I). Ship: AMBUSCADE. Held by: The National Archives - Admiralty, Navy, Royal Marines, and Coastguard Date: 01 September 1797 - 31 October 1798 Reference: ADM 36/14901 Ship: Ambuscade Regarding the Pay Lists which would normally be a copy of the musters, it would appear from the following, that since no break in dates is shown that an attempt "may" have been made to create Pay Lists from information provided following the return of the ship's company to England, in order that the ship's company could be paid off and next of kin paid any arrears due ? Navy Board: Navy Pay Office: Ships' Pay Books (Series III). Ship: Ambuscade. Held by: The National Archives - Admiralty, Navy, Royal Marines, and Coastguard Date: 01 December 1797 - 31 July 1804 Reference: ADM 35/82 Since I don't have access to these documents I can only surmise where you might find what you are looking for, but in view of the Admiralty view on the problem, wouldn't be surprised if what I allude to hasn't survived !! SIR , Enclosed is a Copy of a Letter from Captain Jenkins, of His Majesty's Ship Ambuscade, which is transmitted to you for their Lordships information. I have the Honor to be, Sir, &c. &c. &c. BRIDPORT So it doesn't even mentioned the capture of the vessel ! Hello Angela, What claimed to be a full list of the 10 crew who died on board the Ambuscade was published in the True Briton newspaper of the 12 January 1799 as follows: Dawson Mayne, 1st Lieut.; George Brown, Master; Thomas Powers, Seaman; William Sexton, Seaman; John Brown, Seaman; John Thompson, Seaman; Daniel Britain, Seaman; Massay Campbell, Seaman; John Lewis, Seaman; George M'Comas, Marine.  There were also 37 wounded, including Captain Jenkins who was seriously injured.     3. Hi, This is an extract from a recent posting by Petra Mitchinson to the Cumberland list. I trust Petra won't mind my relaying to this to the Mariners list. Petra is transcribing stuff e.g, adverts and BMD entries, from the Carlisle Patriot. I just thought that its an example of another source of information for anyone interested in the vessel concerned or even as an example of what was going on in 1817. The Cumberland list archives, have all Petra's previous transcriptions of similar stuff, although many of the adverts relate to land and farm transactions. However, there will no doubt be others related to maritime subject matter. Certainly there are quite a few mariners getting married in the area and ex-mariners dying.     3. I am trying to find out more about a merchant navy sea captain who held a US Master Mariner's license between about 1874 (year he was naturalized citizen), and 1896 (when his license expired). I have searched the list archives, and the FAQ but cannot find anything relevant (so excuse me if I have missed it). I have searched the US National Archives web site, but cannot find anything about Master Mariner licenses. I understand that licensing was/is the responsibility of the US National Coast Guard Agency, but can find nothing on their web site about their archives either. The Bremen archives, though are indeed very fine, but in reality all they did was confirm that Feigenbaum was employed by Norddeutscher Lloyd, on a veriety of ships. I was struck, though, that crew lists for the REIHER appear to have been removed from the bound volumes for the period in question (that is, if they were originally there). The suggestion that Feigenbaum's lawyer, William Sanfor Lawton, managed to get hold of these - they were presumably at that time still in the hands of the NDL company itself - strikes me as far-fetched; and lacking in credible motive. More likely removed by an earlier investigator following up the press stories of the 1890s. David

As a Bonus!, have a look at page 484 ("Annual Grants to Widows"). Amongst the North Shields mariners' widows are a Jane Gibson and a Margaret Gibson, also their ages and the numbers of children they had. Are either of those yours? So ... to answer your question ... Yes!, you'll find little nuggets (not whole pages) of information about your ships in many places. Whenever you happen across a new source, just plug in your names and try. Many times you'll come up empty, but other times you'll be immensely pleased with the treasures you find.
