    3. Hi Mick I dont know, but here are some references at the National Archives which I may look up on my next visit at the end of June. With detailed description of Westgate/O'Brien. 1882 Aug 19 CO 137/507/6 Reports that prisoner William Westgate alias O'Brien has been committed to await his return to Ireland. No. 346, folios 31-33 1882 Nov 12 CO 137/507/27 Costs to be incurred in connection with the case of the prisoner William Westgate. No. 381, folios 176-180 Regards Bryan

    1. [MAR] Identifying Rank of Royal Marines Officers
    2. Paul Benyon
    3. Trying to identify the ranks of 2 Royal Marines officers I've been sent 2 photos of portraits of what are thought to be Royal Marine officers, probably from the early decades of the19th Century, which can be seen at : http://www.pbenyon.plus.com/Temp/Temp.html#top ...... List member Jackie adds I have 2 photos of portraits taken of I believe, RMarines. Apparently they are not wearing their dress uniforms, but their dress down uniforms. .. I believe one is a first Lt and one is a second Lt. Should be grateful for any help. I would guess that the arrangement of the buttons down the front may give us some clues, along with the markings on the collar, but I don't have any information which will help me decode what we are seeing. Regards Paul

    3. Lord Frederick Cavendish was the Chief Secretary for Ireland and the other man assassinated with him was Thomas Henry Burke the Permanent Undersecretary. Members of A republication group "Irish National Invincibles". were tried some were hanged some others jailed for the offence. William Westgate alias Michael O'Brien, was not on the list, but I see some info on Google books ( snippet view only ) which may have more detail. Frederick Cavendish was married to a niece of British Prime Minister William Gladstone, and had worked as Gladstone's personal secretary. 3. Whilst indexing crew agreements from the West Glamorgan Archives for my website I came across the following William Westgate, Able Seaman born 1846 Newcastle, the Gladstone O.N. 66391 of Swansea [previous ship] Ibex of London. Signed on Swansea 11th May 1882 Left behind in Puerto Cabello Venezuela 29th Jul.1882. Left behind not for Desertion, Sickness, Death or Mutual Agreement but as the British Consul in Puerto Cabello Venezuela 29th July 1882 stated on the agreement " I hereby certify that the seaman William Westgate was left behind in this port, in my charge he being by his own confession the assassin of Lord Cavendish of Phoenix Park Dublin Ireland on the 6th of May last. In faith in which I hereunder set my hand and Offix the Seal of my Office ~ Rob Conn HBM Vice Consul. Waikato Times Newspaper ~ London 15th Dec ~ William Westgate who confesses to participation in the Phoenix Park Murders of last May has arrived at Plymouth from Jamiaca. He is, apparently, in an imbecile state of mind. 3. Hello Ted Lucky you! Did you manage to get any of the combined indexes as well (ie one or two indexes covering several volumes of the series) or are they just indexed volume by volume? There's some fascinating stuff lurking between the pages of old Sea Breezes, particularly reminiscences of former Masters, and some excellent photos - though it is a pity that photographic reproduction wasn't better in those days! But unless you have access to the index I fear you may be making a rod for your own back...! 1. [MAR] Liverpool Crew List Jan 1826 A - B index
    2. Joan Fawcett
    3. Whislt searching for my elusive John Peter Armstrong I accessed crew records for ships arriving Liverpool for 1826. The following is a list of men named for the month of January (A- B only (c) J. Fawcett) The ships were for voyages prior to that date, the list is technically a MUSTER ROLL and was submitted WHEN THE SHIP DOCKED AT LIVERPOOL, so it is NOT a list of men on the ship when it departed from Liverpool, it was a list of men who WERE on a ship, that arrived at Liverpool. The lists do name deserters, those who died, were left in hospital etc, . The following in an index only, there are further informations in the documents as to engagement/discharge date, the vessels voyage, etc. Name Surname Station Abode Ship Notes Muster Document Date Day Doc # Day Month Year Adam Abirc ? 3. Anne, It is possible if Capt Hall was still active at sea in 1859 he might be on the Lloyd's Captain's List at the London Metropolitan Archives. The index is available on microfilm I think at the National Maritime museum. Ruby is not in Lloyd's register so was probably a small local trader on the NZ colonial register. A good idea of conditions during Capt Hall's apprenticeship is given by Sir Walter Runciman's autobiographical works; 'Before the mast and after.' and 'Collier brigs and their sailors'. Peter

    1. Re: [MAR] crew of the Thunderer
    2. Paul Benyon
    3. Hi Jackie As far as I can see the ship's company of the Thunderer would have been paid off in Nov 1808 and would have gone their various ways when she was dismantled and laid up in Ordinary at Chatham? Those remaining on board, the standing officers, which normally include the ship's Gunner and Boatswain and other naval warrant officers, and suitable seamen, who would remain on board until she was taken over by those breaking her up in March 1814. I must admit that I have never heard of a bootneck (Royal Marine) remaining on board whilst a vessel was in Ordinary : usually they and their Company were discharged to their home Barracks prior to the ship being paid off and I can see no mention of the Thunderer being used for duties, which might possibly warrant their presence on board, and I suspect. looking at the other RM Lieutenants on Steel's List for 1811, that it is another problem one often experiences with Steel's List of the Royal Navy, and that no one has informed Steel when RM officers have returned to barracks, and hence nearly every RM officer appears to be serving on board an RN ship, be that ship in commission or in ordinary, which simply won't be the case if a ship is in ordinary. If someone was still serving on board when she was in Ordinary (in Reserve), then they would have, in effect been working for the Admiral Superintendent of the Dockyard or equivalent officer and their details will normally be held on the Yard Pay Books of ships and vessels in Chatham Ordinary, although I am not familiar with how these probably quite large volumes are laid out. a look in TNA catalogue suggests that the following Yard Pay Books have survived for 1814 ADM 42/105 Chatham Ordinary 1814 ADM 42/265 Chatham Extraordinary 1814 ADM 42/266 Chatham Extraordinary 1814 Whilst it would probably be good research to check these books out I suspect that it could well be a waste of time, and that you should be checking out the Thunderers' Musters : ADM 37/198 Ship: THUNDERER 1808 Sept - Nov which, as you can see, end in Nov 1808, and should hopefully include the date of departure of the RM detachment for RM Barracks. I should be happy to be corrected if I'm wrong, and it would be interesting to know how your research evolves. I don't know if I missed him in the Dec 1814 Navy List, but John Lister seems to have disappeared from the Royal Marines by this date ? In summary, I can believe the Gunner or Boatswain, or other standing officer being on board the Thunderer from 1805-1814, or even longer, but not a Royal Marine officer....they have far more important things to do ashore, such as training their men for all the things that Royal Marines do ashore and can't do on board, and also getting them used to a parade ground again, which doesn't move under their feet ;-) Regards Paul On Wed, 23 Mar 2011 09:32:39 -0400, money@vaxxine.com wrote: >Hi Everyone, >I am hoping to find out what happened to the crew of the Thunderer after its >dismantle in 1814, in particular a RM Lt John Lister. 3. Anne, The Registrar of Shipping and Seamen at Cardiff holds the original register of official numbers. The clip organisation at www.crewlist.org.uk is working through to an index on line. The Merchantile Navy list for some years giving the numbers is available on the web site books.google.com. There was no overall authority keeping track of British Merchant shipping operations. The Board of Trade supervised Crew Agreements and qualifications. Crew lists usually give the seaman's previous ship. HMCustoms kept check upon the arrivals and departures of vessels at individual British ports. Lloyd's Register gave yearly details of vessels insurers or shippers might need for reference. The business community kept track of vessel's movements through Lloyd's List and shipping news in local newspapers. The spread of the telegraph allowed notices of arrivals departures and accidents to be more quickly known through Lloyd's organisation. The Nooing, Minnesota 700 is interesting. It sounds like a Great Lakes trader If so, Captain Hall must have been one of the pioneers on Lake Superior. The copper mountain in Minnesota territory was only exploited in 1844 and since the Soo canal was not opened until 1850 the vessels which carried the copper across the Lake had been laboriously hauled on rollers over the portage at Sault Ste Marie. The copper miners incidentally were mostly Cornishmen and the Neptune had ailed from Plymouth to North America in 1843. Peter

    3. As master he would be able to take wife and children to sea with him if he pleased. The Sultana was a ship of 1004/1128 tons built Richibucto New Brunswick 1847 owned Jardine Liverpool, Hall named as master in Lloyd's Register 1848/49 Ship movements can be traced through Lloyd's List on microfilm at the Maritime museum and also local newspapers, some of which are on-line. The unique official number is useful for distinguishing between vessels of the same name and needed for local customs port books and the crew lists which are held mostly at the Newfoundland Maritime museum.
