    1. [MAR] Ship "Orpheus" of Greenock (Built 1874) ON72374
    2. Neville Pamment
    3. Can anyone help me with information about this ship, built by Steele and Co at Greenock in 1874? She was used mainly in the Java sugar trade but made voyages to the west coast of the USA, Japan, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. I've uploaded an image of a painting of her to the Mariners Photo Gallery site. I've been compiling her history and have quite a lot of information on her voyages up to 1896, when she was sold to the Fratelli Cosulich in Trieste. In particular, I am seeking a photograph of her - I can't find one on the web, though there are photos of her sister ships Eurydice and Niobe. Also, any information on her voyages or history after 1896, when her home port was Trieste, would be very valuable Cheers Ultra039

    1. [MAR] Ages of Seamen
    2. Paul Benyon
    3. We occasionally have cause to comment here on the doubtful age of RN seamen during the 19th Century, and even later, so thought the following comment by a naval surgeon in 1840 apropos discussing the health of seamen in the 1830s, which not only confirms our suspicions, but gives a few reasons why this might be the case....he is discussing the age of seamen and the relevance to health.....and as you see, he thinks that collecting statistics at that date would be a waste of time : "They often serve long in the mercantile, before they enter the royal navy; there are no accounts of their ages but those given by themselves, which are frequently erroneous, sometimes from ignorance or carelessness, sometimes from design. Lads who enter the service, and whose ages are ascertained, are discharged from it at the end of three or four years; many of them then go into merchant ships, to return to the service, if at all, after the lapse of years, when they give their respective ages at any number of years they please. The medical officers of the navy know how common it is for a sailor to grow older by ten or twelve years in as many' months, according to his statements. He is aware that after a specified age he will not be admitted into the royal navy. It is his object to enter it, perhaps to get out of a merchant ship, which he dislikes, because he prefers the public service after.a trial of the other, or that he wants to complete a period of time. to entitle him to a pension; and in either case, if above the regulation age, he states himself to be under it. But in a year or two he has completed the time he wanted for a pension, or tires of the order, and discipline of a ship of war, and wishes to return to the comparative license of a merchant ship. He is then anxious to be invalided, and therefore often feigns disease, if he has none, and to aid his design, overstates, as he had formerly understated, his age; and he will affirm that, though he was only 39 some eighteen months ago, he is now 60 years of age. It would be highly satisfactory in an inquiry like this, to get rid of such sources of uncertainly, and error in the age of seamen, but it is felt, till they are removed, that any calculation of its power on health, during short periods could not make any thing like a near approach to accuracy; it is therefore better not to enter on an inquiry which could lead only to vague, or to false conclusions." Source : Sickness, Mortality, and Invalding in the Royal Navy and Army 1830-36 - Published by the House of Lords 1840 - Accounts and Papers - Vol XVII - which appears in an item in Google Books entitled sickness, mortality, & invaliding.pdf Nice to know it isn't our imagination, although I think we usually have similar problems with boy seamen rather than the able variety :-) Paul

    3. If any lister can help me fill in some of the gaps for Andrew Kerbyson's career, and/or tell me more about the sailing vessels he served in/captained and his voyages, I'd greatly appreciate it. To date, this is what I know: 1866 - Andrew Kerbyson was born near Withernsea, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. 1883, 26 May - he signed on as a "boy"; vessel name illegible, reg. 3. Hello Barry You know, I THOUGHT there was something funny about the official numbers of the first ship. 320 or 326 are very low numbers and they refer respectively to the AZORIAN of London (101 tons) and AMITY of Goole (50 tons), neither of which fits your description. Since this is the 1880s, it is more likely that he was on a vessel with a 5-digit number beginning with 6, which can look like a 0..... The IMUNCINA, ON 60326, 583 tons, of Glasgow, maybe fits the bill much better? She was a barque, built at Govan in 1867 owned by John Donaldson of 165 St Vincent Street. Could that be her? 165 foot long, beam 30ft, depth 17 foot, further details here: http://www.clydesite.co.uk/clydebuilt/viewship.asp?id=13060 There is a wreck report for her fire dated 1889 at http://www.plimsoll.org/resources/SCCLibraries/WreckReports/15653.asp . It would appear from the very little I can see on the 19th Century Newspapers free index search (I don't have a subscription!) that she sailed from Antwerp for somewhere else on 24th April 1884 so that MIGHT fit in with a discharge date of the 26th. Crew agreement for voyage ending 1884 is at the MHA at MUN http://www.mun.ca/mha/holdings/searchcombinedcrews.php (enter 60326 in the search box). The only drawback to this neat theory is that the mystery vessel is described as "Rig 09" and the other vessels - CAITLOCH and NEBO - with this description were both ship-rigged, not barques. It sounds as if you have his applications for examinations so should be able to check whether the name/number might fit. If you wanted to follow up the IMUNCINA's crew agreement, I have found that if you ask the MHA librarians nicely they will check whether the name you want appears before copying a document - it will cost you a small fee for their time, but will save you a larger one if it is wrong. Otherwise Kerbyson and the barque GULF STREAM are mentioned in the Sydney Morning Herald of 27 June 1902. They arrived at Sydney "yesterday morning after a passage of 100 days from Glasgow.... Captain Kerbyson reports having experienced fine weather throughout the voyage. The GULF STREAM brings a general cargo for Sydney and Newcastle and upon discharge will load coal at Newcastle for a foreign port, the name of which has not yet been disclosed." http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/14442585 If you Google "Captain Kerbyson" in quotes, you should find a reference to a 1915 document referring to a Captain Kerbyson in passing. It concerns supplies delivered from Portland to Pitcairn Island free of charge, so may refer to him. Oddly he does not appear in the index to Lloyds Captains registers, which goes to show that it's not comprehensive. There seem to be many Google hits on terms like "barque gulf stream" and the names of vessels with their official numbers. 3. Hello Harold,   A place to look is the Mercantile Navy List. Ships are listed there twice - once in alphabetical order and once in Official Number order.   The online Digital Archives Initiative at Memorial University of Newfoundland has five volumes digitized: 1876, 1880, 1892, 1896, 1921. http://collections.mun.ca/cdm4/menu_open.php?CISOROOT=/mha_mercant&CISOPTR=8093&CISOSHOW=-1   If you download the 1876 volume, STERLING, O.N. 50493, is on page 489 of 582 - built Boston, USA, 1864, owner William Kelly, Liverpool.   N. B.  - In that edition and some others, sailing vessels and steam vessels are on separate lists.   There are several editions online at Google Books incl. 1850, 1860, 1861, 1867.   Regards, Adi   --- On Wed, 5/11/11, Hwabz@aol.com <Hwabz@aol.com> wrote: Hi ~ I'm looking at xerox copies of Lloyd's Captains Registers where I've  found two ships of interest with official numbers (ONs) that are difficult to  decipher. 1. [MAR] seaman's tickets
    2. Anne Speight
    3. Many years ago I had limited progress looking for family members in the lists of Seaman’s Tickets at the PRO. However I am very much the amateur and wondered if anything has been transcribed, or if there are other records that might give indication as to the career of my 3x great grandfather and his son. I am not very confident with what I’ve got – couldn’t work out the ports from which they sailed to and from (except Exeter kept cropping up), neither could I ascertain any names of vessels on which they sailed. WILLIAM ROBERT (SMITH) PINE : born 30th April 1818 Exmouth. Registered (1835-1844 system), but I couldn’t comprehend the ticket number or details given!. I couldn’t find him in the (1845-1854) system but I would imagine he must have been active and then in (1853-1857) I think I found him with ticket number 32955. He married Mary Ann MARSHALL in November 1842 at Starcross (other side of estuary) and they had 5 children all born Exmouth. WILLIAM was at home, noted as mariner on all census occasions except 1851. In 1851 both William and his wife and 3 young children are not registered in Devon. An error or could they have been at sea? William died September 1874. I have a studio photo of this man taken at Exmouth. I believe his father, and probably other family members worked the ferryboat across the Exmouth estuary. Certainly the family home was the isolated house on the sand banks which jutted out into the estuary. WILLIAM ROBERT PINE: born April 1845 Exmouth. 1851 census – no reference. 1861 mariner living at home. Married 1867 London Central – described mariner. Oldest son born Erith,Kent in 1867. Second son born Victoria Docks in 1870. 1871 his wife & sons at Exmouth but William described ‘at sea’. Died 1874, on day of father’s funeral (a drowning accident in Exmouth harbour) Any help most appreciated. Anne

    2. Piers Smith-Cresswell
    3. Hi Karen I think I would be a bit suspicious about the 1896 description of him as a "master mariner" too. First, the chap himself was dead, so it wasn't necessarily how he would have described himself; secondly, his daughter may not have understood the distinction between "mariner" and "master mariner", and thirdly, she may have understood the distinction very well but wanted to present herself as being the daughter of a master, rather than a mere sailor. Certainly he is not in the index to Lloyds Captains Register, though this may not be conclusive of his NOT being a master; he may never have sailed on a "foreign" voyage. Have you had any luck with Gale's 19th Century British Newspapers online (access available through certain libraries) or any Irish Directories? Maybe there might be a notice of his death? Have you checked whether there is any record of a probate of his will or letters of administration? I gather that a great many records were destroyed but that some survive. Findmypast.com seems to have a new Irish section. He is maybe more likely to appear if he WAS a master mariner. Ancestry has some additional Liverpool Parish register documents come online in the last few days including the marriage records and the baptism certificates of at least one child. -----Original Message----- From: mariners-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mariners-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Karen McLaughlin Sent: 12 May 2011 23:29 To: MARINERS@rootsweb.com Subject: [MAR] Washington Cunningham, Master Mariner ? 3. Hi All I am hoping someone out there can help me to find further information about my gt gt grandfather Washington Cunningham who was a mariner - and possibly even a Master Mariner by the time he died. He was probably born around 1835 but birthplace is unknown. According to marriage certificate, his father was George Cunningham, a ship's carpenter. Between 1856 and 1862 Washington appears to have been a 'mariner' based in Liverpool (ref info taken from marriage certificate (1856) + baptism records of 3 daughters (1857/1860/1862). However, I cannot find the family on the 1861 England census. The family must have moved across to N. Ireland because in 1864 a 4th daughter (my gt grandmother - Catherine Rebecca) is born in Strangford, N.Ireland. In 1871, a son is born in Ballyculter, Strangford, N.Ireland and Washington's occupation is given as 'sailor'. By 1896 he is deceased - his name (deceased) appears on his daughter Catherine Rebecca's 1896 marriage certificate and his occupation is given as Master Mariner. If anyone could give me new information or point me in the right direction, I'd be extremely grateful. I visited the records office at Kew but was unable to find Washington Cunningham's name on any maritime index. Many thanks Karen

    1. Re: [MAR] SS BENINGTON
    2. Mick
    3. Hi Thelma The Vessel lost late in late December 1904 enroute to Rotterdam was the Steam Ship Berrington, Official Number 53117. SS Benington continued in the Register up to 1915. To start SS.Berrington was built By Palmers at Newcastle in 1865. She was a 767 gross ton cargo vessel owned by John Fenwick and Son 57 Gracechurch Street (I presume London) the last registration detail I can find is 1899 when she was registered in Howdon. Lloyds Casualty List reports. The Berrington Sailed from the Tyne for Rotterdam on the 28th of December 1904 and was never heard of again. The only report of her loss I can find is in The Times, Friday, Jan 06, 1905 which lists William as the 2nd Engineer. I have placed an image of the report for you on our image Gallery, you will need to apply for membership to the gallery to view a larger image. http://www.mariners-list.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=6 There may also be a Board Of Trade wreck report but I don't have any information on that, someone else on the list might be able to give you directions as to where this may be kept.
