    3. Thankyou Paul. I should be able to do something with the Donegal and Pay and Muster lists 1802. I do have the admission for James Bryans son Silas to enter the Greenwich Hopsital School and it did state James served on the Majestic in 1800, but the information for the Donegal will be enough. I shall think about hiring a researcher Edie ----- Original Message ----- From: "Paul Benyon" <pbenyon@pbenyon.plus.com> To: <mariners@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, September 03, 2011 9:04 PM Subject: Re: [MAR] Majestic and Donegal Edie The Pay Books and Musters, which list personnel borne on the books of the Donegal, have survived and can be found at the National Archives at Kew as follows : Ships' Pay Books ADM 35/479 Ship: Donegal 1801 Aug. 1 - 1802 Apr. 30 ADM 35/2194 Ship: Donegal 1802 May 1 - 1806 Aug. 31 Ships' Musters ADM 36/14726 Ship: DONEGAL 1801 Aug - 1802 Apr ADM 36/15680 Ship: DONEGAL 1802 May - 1803 Feb But these are usually fairly large volumes which cover relatively long periods and are made up of several submissions which each contain an index and the names of the whole ship's company of several hundred officers men, along with details of the comings and goings etc. : being bigger than the Majestic I would guess that the complement of the Donegal would be about 625 : http://www.pbenyon.plus.com/18-1900/D/01427.html I see I've made a note of 594 men for the Majestic : http://www.pbenyon.plus.com/18-1900/M/02850.html Regret though that the Majestic was not in commission during the year 1800, being in refit, so no Ships' Pay Books were created for this period, although they do exist for the years on either side, when the ship was in commission. 3. Greetings Hella Many thanks for taking the time to reply to my query. Since I posted the query, I located the text of the book online - initially I couldn't find anything more than the beginning of the book and headings! I eventually found the reference I was looking for and after trying to 'copy and paste', save, and a few other strategies, I discovered how to copy the text - great relief! It was too much to try to copy out by hand. To other listers - thank you for reading my request, but I now have the full text of the reference to my great-grandfather's brother. 3. http://www.sole.org.uk/hasewe.htm Sian, The link above takes you to an interesting little snippet about Inconstant in the 1880s and mention of Royal Marines going ashore in Egypt is made. There are a few places where you may find further information: The Royal Marines Museum, Portsmouth, holds extensive records of Royal Marines and Royal Naval Bands and their leaders. The National Museum of the Royal Navy - I think this is its new name - are also loaded with facts. It may be worth a plug at the RN Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton, Somerset. This sounds a bit odd but they have lots of stuff about RM/RN Bands ante WW1. A few degrees off your Bill Oliver target but you may be able to pad out information to help the search. I have tried googling it, but so far without any success (other than confirming that it exists, of course!). Patrick, your suggestion regarding "band transfers" is very interesting. The band master on HMS Inconstant was Andrea Teseo and I thought that such an unusual name would be easy to track down and might give me a lead. However, it turns out he died in 1883. I haven't yet managed to establish whether or not he had gone to the army before that, but I suspect not given that his (Teseo's) medal roll records are annotated "D.D." with an '83 date, suggesting to me that he died in service. I have often wondered what William Oliver played. (There is a lot of music, much of it brass, in the family.) Does anybody know what a naval band would have consisted of at that time? I don't suppose there's any way of finding out what instrument he actually played, but does anybody have any suggestions of where I might try looking? 1. Re: [MAR] CREW LISTS
    2. Peter Enlund
    3. Dear Max What is on them all depends on the dates you are looking for. I have crew lists from 1833 - 1845 for fishermen sailing out of Greenwich and there is no ticket number on those, whereas in 1848 there are. A word of caution though. The lists are in very large cardboard boxes, in absolutely no order whatsoever and are exceptionally fragile papers. The boxes do not contain every vessel for a particular year range. It is a slow process to look through each box and examine each document and whilst you may be lucky in having the researcher hit paydirt quickly, you could turn up nothing at all and find it has taken many hours to do so. I have spent many hours trawling through boxes, spending on average an hour on each at least. That being said, the port was London. It may be less time consuming for smaller ports. Before you commit, ask what the researcher's own experience has been in this type of search as they should be able to give you a reasonable estimate of what they think each could take. For me, trawling through those boxes, or anything else at the National Archives for that matter, is such a wonderful way to spend a holiday. I will send you some examples off line Good luck. 3. Hello Sian, Possibly the 8/squiggle thing could be '...........Officer Commanding.....etc' with the final letters abbreviated to fit the column? In the 1800s the world of Military and Naval Music was a strange place. It had a history of what could be described as cross pollination. Directors of Music and Bandmasters were often employed by a Regiment or Army Group as direct entries to service based on their musical qualifications and abilities. These men were frequently head hunted by other Units. Famously, in recent history, is the late Col F Vivian-Dunn who was recruited to the Royal Marines Band Service, on a kind of loan, from the BBC Symphony Orchestra as a Lieutenant Director of Music. One of his predecessors, F J Ricketts (aka Kenneth J Alford) arrived at the Royal Marines by way of the Royal Irish Regiment and the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. The point is these influential music leaders took some of their star players with them when they moved - proving us Musoes were doing it before soccer clubs! So, your man may well have gone from RN/RM Band to the RRF as part of a transfer deal and it took a while for his medal to catch up - not unusual in modern times!
