Not normally my sphere of interest, but noted the following article in the Nautical Magazine for 1837, page 689, or page 724 per Acrobat, available thru' Googlebooks, which, if the results of the examinations were published, might assist many of those on this list who often appear to be researching masters from the Sunderland region : Sunderland, August 16, 1837. Notice.-To Shipowners, Masters, and Mariners.-Whereas the mutual policies of insurance of the port of Sunderland, known by the names of the Star, Marine, Wear, Britannia, and Neptune, have severally inserted a clause in their policies to the following effect "' That a board for the examination of masters, be established at Sunderland, to be called the Marine Board, which shall consist of five members, to be chosen annually by the committees; and every person not having been previously master of a vessel, to produce a certificate of qualification from the said board, before taking command of any vessel insured therein; and subscribers not to employ such persons as masters of their respective ships without a certificate." This is to give notice, that the said board will sit every Friday, from ten till three o'clock, at their office, No. 1, High.-street, Sunderland, and all persons who intend to take the command, or to offer themselves as masters of ships insured in the said policies, either in the coasting or foreign trade, are requested to make application to Mr. Thomas Thew, jun., at the office of the board, where every information, as to the nature of the examination, &c., will be given; and it is expected that all young men of respectability and character will avail themselves of the earliest opportunity of passing their examination and obtaining their certificate. This is particularly applicable to those who are at present mates of vessels. George Booth, Chairman. Paul Isle of Portland

Hi. I can get into the site and view ships up to F and then it says error in connection. So part of the site is working - I started at the begining and looked until it stopped - but what is there looks good! The rest was downloading (it says it is a huge file that will take a while to do) and then came up that the file was damaged. But the begining is worth a look. Good luck Lorraine

Evening all, A friend is looking to see if he can find information on the following person: "William McDonald born in Scotland about 1806 and went to Australia as a "Mate" about the end of the 1830's. His future wife Mary Casey born about 1820 in Tipperary Ireland was a passenger on the ship he was crewing. Family legends has it that the ship was the James Paterson" Does anyone have any ideas where to start looking Thanks in advance Dave Neilson
I have in the past received help and advice through the list and am now hoping for some help in tracing my husband’s missing grandfather Harry Harland, last noted in the 1911 census as a 35 year old 2nd engineer (born Whity) on the Vernon in Newcastle. Though married and the father of four he appears to have disappeared from this date and was considered to have abandoned the family and nothing more is known of him. Trawling recently through Find My Past’s Merchant Navy seamen 1918-1941 I have come across the following HARRY HARLAND Card type CR2 Rank or rating MRS Appropriation books RSS BT 348 1921-41 Name and official no of ship 152067 Date of engagement 31.8.1922 I have, through CLIP, found that the name of the ship was PARVATHAVARTHENIE and the port of registry Jaffna. How can I find further details regarding this Harry Harland? Is it possible for me to do this from Australia or should I find a researcher? Any help would be much appreciated, Regards Moyna Harland (Western Australia)
Has anyone else had problems accessing the PHOTOSHIP web site.i can`t seem to be able to gain access. Cheers, Joe McMillan, South Australia.

Hi I've just rejoined this list after some years. My daughter will be in the UK shortly and is hoping to do some research on a Manx Master Mariner (1811-1867) and a Manx Ships Engineer (1840-1927), and we'd appreciate any suggestions as to the best place to do this, the Registers she will need to access and how much time would be needed. We have very little information on either of the people, so are looking for any details of their careers, voyages, qualifications etc. Any help would be much appreciated Cheers Mike Constantine Timaru New Zealand
Hi Everyone I am wanting to find out more about the above person. He was born in Rye in the late 1800's and ran away from home to be a deck boy on the Oregon which sailed around Cape Horn to Valparaiso. At 28 he received his master's ticket and his first command was on a brigantine taking firewood from Baltic countries to England. He ended up in Sydney Australia during the 1914-18 war. He joined the army and returned to Sydney after the war was over. Captain Maitland also made the bell rope for King George V1 and later one for Lord Mountbatten. One bell rope went to the Britannia and the other one we are told in the Royal Naval Boy's Training Establishment as a specimen of work done in the old days and an inspiration for the young ones. He was also known as John Maitland and he was also an author of short stories and had a book published about his adventures around the top of Australia. He was into everything from hunting for gold in Bolivia to pearl diving in New Guinea. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Wendy Cook Wagga Wagga NSW Australia.

Mike I would guess that there is a good deal more information on-line these days compared with when you were last on the list, such as Google Books and on-line newspapers etc. I doubt I can help, but in case others can, would suggest that you perhaps mention a couple of names and possible ages and if you've got them or their families in the census etc. ? Research guides can be found on the Mariners List web site, the National Maritime Museum and the National Archives : www.mariners-l.co.uk/ http://www.nmm.ac.uk/researchers/library/research-guides/ http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guide-listing.htm Paul On Fri, 9 Sep 2011 09:05:56 +1200, "Mike Constantine" <mwconstantine@gmail.com> wrote: >Hi > >I've just rejoined this list after some years. > >My daughter will be in the UK shortly and is hoping to do some research on a >Manx Master Mariner (1811-1867) and a Manx Ships Engineer (1840-1927), and >we'd appreciate any suggestions as to the best place to do this, the >Registers she will need to access and how much time would be needed. > >We have very little information on either of the people, so are looking for >any details of their careers, voyages, qualifications etc. > >Any help would be much appreciated > >Cheers > >Mike Constantine >Timaru New Zealand > > > > > > > > >------------------------------- >To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to MARINERS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message 50° 33' N, 2° 26' W http://www.pbenyon.plus.com/Naval.html
