    3. Hi Colin, I found a DESMOND A.D.MALDEN born in Wellington,Western Australia in 1921 could this be your man. Kindest regards, Joe McMillan, South Australia. -----Original Message----- From: Colin Harrison Sent: Sunday, June 09, 2013 4:43 AM To: mariners Subject: [MAR] Fw: True Enigma-Help Please From: Colin Harrison Sent: Saturday, June 08, 2013 1:06 PM To: Mariners Subject: True Enigma-Help Please I have a relative who has too many stories about him that add confusion to the story of his life. Any help in correcting what I say will be sincerely appreciated. His name was Desmond Anthony Drinkwater Paliologus MALDEN. No, that is not a lie. He was born in Australia in 1921 I think. I have seen his passage leaving Sydney with two older sisters in 1922, hence I think he was born in Australia. In 1938 in England he became a licensed radio operator for the Royal Mail. The next records show many voyages in and out of New York in 1939 until the war started. He was on the Lancastra. Was that a Royal Mail ship ? Or just a tourist ship ? In 1941 he was on an unnamed ship in Halifax. Shortly thereafter he was cited in the London paper for brave conduct when torpedoed. The ship he was on was the Port of Portland?? Subsequent papers show him as a lieutenant commander in the Royal Navy??? He was too young??? Later records show him in business directories in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Islands---I am unable to access those directories. Still later he shows up in California in Los Angles on voter registration lists. With this persons four unique given names clearly spelled out every time I can’t believe there would be a second person with that same collection of names. He married Joyce Christian NAISH in Dec 1945 in East Glamorganshire. She was born 23 Jan 1921 in Pontypridd, Mommouthshire. Any clarity any kind sole can bring is most sincerely appreciated, Colin Harrison in southwest Utah ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

Hi Colin, Not my period of interest, but I can tell you where to find the books that should include his name if he was ever an officer in the RN. I would have thought it unlikely that he might have achieved that rank in such a short space of time, but strange things can happen in wartime, so a case of never saying never ! Oh, the books, The Navy Lists for the period Feb 1939 -> Jul 1945 should list all commissioned and warrant officers who served in the Royal Navy which can be found on the Way Back Machine at : http://archive.org/index.php A search on the words - Navy List - should produce well over 100 hits, including many for the 19th Century and WWI, so it may take you a little while to find what you want....most of them should include an alphabetical index....it is some years since I browsed through the Lists for this period so am not too familiar with them now ! But these Navy Lists are in .pdf format and are searchable ! Or, at least those I've downloaded for WWI are, and they come from the same source ie The National Library of Scotland. But the usual caveats apply to any print that has been OCRd for search purposes. A passing thought before I hit the send button.....if he didn't join the Royal Navy one wonders if he might have joined the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA), who employed W/T people for communications, and many of those I used to know back in the 1950s and 60s qualified for officer status in the RFA service, which kept the Royal Navy supplied with fuel, food and stores etc. So not quite an RN Officer. But regret am unable to help you with tracing someone who may have served on board RFAs. Regards Paul 50° 33' N, 2° 26' W http://www.pbenyon.plus.com/Naval.html

    3. hello i suspect the vessel was the City Of Portland. Lt. Commander was not an age thing. The number of ships and need for crew was great. I was once on a vessel during the VN war where every officer was a licensed master. If you go to the american antiquarian society they will have directories. david On 6/8/2013 2:13 PM, Colin Harrison wrote: > > From: Colin Harrison > Sent: Saturday, June 08, 2013 1:06 PM > To: Mariners > Subject: True Enigma-Help Please > > I have a relative who has too many stories about him that add confusion to the story of his life. 2. Hello Colin, I can deal with the easy part of your story. LANCASTRIA (note spelling) was a Cunarder. She was on the trans-Atlantic run from Liverpool to NYC up to 1932 when she became a cruise ship. Your relative apparently left her soon before she was lost. She was sunk by the Luftwaffe in June 1940 off St. Nazaire France while evacuating civilians and troops with the loss of at least 4,000 lives making it by far the greatest marine disaster in the world at least up to that time. The exact number of people on board is unknown, nobody kept a count, they just shoved them on board, but there were 2,477 survivors. I think if you wished he would have another look but this may be all you need ? 3. Thanks to Rhonda & Bev The lead came from NSW Mariners http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/ and the extra history helped piece it together . I found the corroborating evidence on the Register of British ships . http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/explore/migration/british-ships/index.aspx While there were a few other vessels with the name Indus floating around this one fits the bill. 3. Mick Whether it's the same ship or not, but an Indus turns up on the London-Brisbane emigrant route in 1870. 1871, 1872,1873, 1874, and 1876 that I know of. Captains were John Roberts, E P Ellis and E Hunt. 3. Hi Mick - The ship arrives in Melbourne on December 3rd, 1849 from Glasgow, Capt. Putt, hvaing departed Glasgow on the 27th of July. http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/4770743?searchTerm=indus&searchLimits=l-decade=184|||l-month=12|||l-year=1849|||sortby=dateAsc I have traced the departure as well to the Glasgow newspapers. There are a number of references in the Australian newspaper after that arrival. Also, the NSW Mariners site has a number of references to the ship. http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/results.htm?cx=004861337844262330206%3Ayq_2tgjydtg&cof=FORID%3A11&q=indus&sa=Search&siteurl=mariners.records.nsw.gov.au%2Fsearch.htm&ref=mariners.records.nsw.gov.au%2F&ss= Also check Google with "Barque Indus" and "Bark Indus" for a number of interesting links. https://www.google.ca/search?q=%22bark+indus%22&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a#q=%22barque+indus%22&client=firefox-a&hs=lPJ&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&ei=Og-tUY_bNoK8yAH8t4HoAQ&start=20&sa=N&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.47244034,d.aWc&fp=c68dd2e4c43b97&biw=1080&bih=1763 https://www.google.ca/search?q=%22bark+indus%22&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a#client=firefox-a&hs=I5d&rls=org.mozilla:en-US%3Aofficial&sclient=psy-ab&q=%22bark+indus%22&oq=%22bark+indus%22&gs_l=serp.3...1898195.1898195.1.1898490.1.1.0.0.0.0.211.211.2-1.1.0...0.0...1c..15.psy-ab.HxkUzEhVRvw&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.47244034,d.aWc&fp=c68dd2e4c43b97&biw=1080&bih=1763 Hope that helps. 3. Hi, My great Uncle, Herbert Edward Carter, was born in Tooting, Surrey in 1881, and I know went to Peru in 1919, as a passenger. Apparently he was a Master Mariner and later imported bananas from Peru to England. I am trying to find out anything I can about him and his seafaring adventures, and if possible where he ended up. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks, Sharon from Australia

I see someone of your name has a family tree on Ancestry giving date of death Dec 1871 in Bath, and birth 1 Nov 1815 Clare Oxford UK Hi everyone, I am trying (and have been for a number of years) to find out more information about my GGG-Grandfather, Thomas WILLCOX. I have him born in 1815, but that is not definite. He married Elizabeth Pocknell, who was born 1826. Thomas' occupation on 1 of the census' I found him on as a Mariner. The last census I found him on, was the 1871. On previous census', on 1 he's there and on the next, he disappears. Possibly at sea? But I'm just guessing. So, what I'm after is his date of birth (at least the year), when and where he married Elizabeth, and Thomas' death. I've tried the free BMD and the BMD on Ancestry, but found nothing. I do have info on him that he was a Master Mariner and served 28 years. I also have his son, Fredrick, on board a ship on a census, but no Thomas. Can someone help please? ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    1. Re: [MAR] Brig Robina Built at Greenock 1838
    2. Morning Mick, A possible further area of investigation is a father/son connection. Note the comma in the name from 1842. Is it possible that your Anderson's father was in business with someone called Anderson at that time and thought it would make a good first name? There is a good list of ship-builders, and of ships then in building, and also a useful history of the port. I do note however that between pages 66 and 67 is a large fold-out sheet, with what are clearly names of ships and owners, and I think that is what you need to be looking at. Feel like a trip to Edinburgh?
