Hello C.V., Are you aware of "Lloyd's List", twice-weekly maritime newspaper? You can access it for free online and for 1825 and 1826 you will get several hits for her to help you recontruct her travels. (I used 'Butler' as my search term.) On the front page of issue #6123, dated 9 June 1826 is: " Cape of Good Hope, March 23rd The Harmony, Butler, was totally wrecked in coming out of the Knyana on the 13th inst. Crew saved." There. That gives you a specific date. Here's the link: http://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/000549597 In the 1826 edition of Lloyd's Register of shipping, free online, she apears to be # 144 under the 'H" and that gives you a little information about her build. http://www.maritimearchives.co.uk/lloyds-register.htmlhttp:// FindMyPast (subscription/credits site) has a few hits for possible Richard Butler-s in their merchant seamen records e.g. there is one born 1788 in Whitby Yorkshire, another born 1806 in St. Dunmore and a third born 1808 in Dublin. Might be worthwhile buying a few credits there. Regards, Adi P.S. Erm ... if you write again, perhaps you will tell us your name. (Smile) it just seems a bit friendlier. >________________________________ > From: C. The names of some of his other ships were the Governor, the Eclipse and the Free Trade. These were of the John Lidgett and Sons Australian Line of Packets and were all over 1000 tons (1857). Another ship, the John Masterman, was a Government emigration ship (but owned by the Lidgetts) which went to the Cape of Good Hope from Southampton in 1861. Under this advert it says apply to John Lidgett and Sons, Ship and Insurance Brokers. He died 17th June 1861 and left "under £60,000". His wife Ann Jacob and sons John Jacob and George (both ship owners) were the executors. His will might be interesting. John Jacob Lidgett married Maria Elizabeth Scott 7/9/1851 at St John's Westminster. This was a C of E wedding in spite of the fact that Maria's father was the Principal of the Westminster Wesleyan Training College. I couldn't find an obituary, which surprised me. Clare Oxford _UK_ (mailto:[email protected]) >Am seeking more information on Mr. John Lidgett who is shown as a Master Mariner when he married in >1828.By 1851 he describes himself as a Ship Owner, of 13 ships (trading as Lidgett & Co or Lidgett & son).
Hi Have you any access to the database 19th Century British Newspapers? Some libraries grant this. There are well over 200 entries for John Lidgett, many of them to a man of that man who was director of the Star Life Assurance Company. May be the same man, but there is no further information. However, several papers reported the following- With reference to your letter of the 17th December last covering a petition from various British Masters frequenting the Baltic to his Majesty the King of Denmark respecting the early removal of the buoys and beacons in the Sound.....the King...is pleased to grant the prayer of the petitioners.....in future the buoys and beacons are to remain until the navigation is stopped by lee and three additional buoys are to be placed in the part of the Sound called the Grounds Letter from the British Consul at Elsinore to Captain John Lidgett Morning Post March 24th 1834. John seems to have been quite a one for political action, as he also signed a petition to Sir Robert Peel, regarding Systematic Colonization in order to promote trade, increase employment , remove some sources of general distress and improve the state of the country! (Morning Post March 27 1843) He also attended a Meeting of the Friends of British Navigation held to try to prevent the repeal of the Navigation laws, April 4th 1849 reported April 5th One of the ships he owned was the Gratitude, 400 tons, sailing to Port Adelaide and advertised in the Daily news Feb 10th 1848 "well-known fast-sailing British built" I imagine other listers will have looked at the same database for you, but contact me if you would like me to look further he did not apply for a Master's certificate of Service, presumably because he had no need of one in 1851 Clare Oxford UK >Hi Listers >Am seeking more information on Mr. John Lidgett who is shown as a Master Mariner when he >married in 1828.By 1851 he describes himself as a Ship Owner, of 13 ships (trading as Lidgett & Co >or Lidgett & son).

Hi - Some information I found on the Harmony on the British Press, though I am afraid that I found nothing on the wreck. The Harmony was reported in the Morning Post 28 Nov 1825, arriving at the Cape (Captain Butler) from England, July 6th. The ship Harmony arrived with Captain Butler was reported at St. Helena's in the Morning Post on 28 Nov 1825, having left the Cape on the 29th of September, but was also reported as a sailing from St. Helena "The Harmony, Butler, from Rio, the 4th of October." I am wondering if it's possible to find more information on a Merchant seaman David Rattray of Montrose Scotland, Register Ticket 248700. I found his Register Ticket number on Find My Past UK and have also found some of his voyages on Find My Past , between the years 1854 -1857 (Although deciphering the ships names is a little challenging). I am not sure if it is the David Rattray I am searching for, hence the request as to whether there would be more information on him from when he registered. I am in New Zealand, so any information would be appreciated Thanks Jude
