    3. It's me again   After Edward died 24 November 1782, his will gives no indication of what would happen to the ship after his death. There is also an Administration Bond for £400 against Edwards will with an Inventory of his worldly goods, but, I am having problems with Durham University delivering them.  He had a daughter only months old, his son was born 5 months after his death, so he would obviously not know about him. Any suggestions of finding the sale of the ship would help my research.    Michael

    3.  Edward Simmons was Master and owner of a Brig Collier "providence and Mary",  his death was reported in The Newcastle Courant 30 November 1782.  I would like to find how Edward died, I have been informed that he died at sea, but am unable to find any information in the local (North Shields; Newcastle Central; South Shields libraries or Woodhorn Archives).  Any suggestions of how I might find the information would be appreciated.   Michael

    3. Hi Judith Not really the remit of this list as a passenger but for deaths at sea, there is a separate GRO index for same Much would depend upon where they died and whether the Captain reported it as he should have done (they should have in 1956, much earlier many were missed) They are available on findmypast (pay per view or subscriber) and also free on http://www.familyrelatives.com You need to register but not give cc details I had a quick look at the marine deaths and did not find a FREEMAN death in 1956, one in 1957 a John W age 49 ships name Chandler So how good is the information of a death on the Queen Mary in 1956? There are also consular returns, again some available on the above, in theory if at sea on a British Ship they should be registered in the marine returns but could they have been a passenger but died ashore? I would check all to see what if anything turns up Did they leave a will (ie are they recorded in the probate calendars on Ancestry?) There are 15 FREEMANs as passengers of the Queen Mary in 1956, have you checked those passenger lists? there should be a page for such events to be recorded and the Captain to sign, not all are available online but worth checking for I would say Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 29/09/2013 11:10, judith kennerdale wrote: > Good morning, can anyone tell me how I go about finding a death at sea (passenger named Freeman) Queen Mary c1956 please. 3. The East India Company ship ASIA (1780-1798) departed Portsmouth on 12th April, 1796 for Madras and was at Simon’s Bay (South Africa) by 21st July. She was in eastern waters until the end of 1797. The 3rd Rate ship of the line ASIA (1764) of 64 guns was on the North American station from August, 1796. She could have been in the Caribbean in that year. -----Original Message----- From: ScienceSources Sent: Sunday, 29 September 2013 5:27 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [MAR] Asia - HMS and/or East Indiaman? Hello Listers, Is it possible or likely that in 1796 there were two British ships called Asia, one a Royal Navy ship and one an East Indiaman? And both in the Caribbean in that year? I have two brothers, both serving on the "Asia" in 1796, but one was in the RN and the other refers to his ship as an East Indiaman. Any advice welcome! Thanks, Gill Langley

    3. Hello Gill, Further to what Peter Beeston had to say, Charles Hardy's Register of Ships of the United East India Company 1760-1810 (published 1811, p.174) says as follows: SEASON 1795-1796.  ASIA, 816 Tons, 6 Voyage. COAST AND BAY.  (Thomas Newte, Esq.). Capt. John Davy Foulkes. 1  William Dunsford 2  Thomas Mortimer 3  John Yarde Fownes 4  Henry Barnes Sur. Benjamin Johnson Pur. Peter Grant Sailed Ports[mouth] 12 Apr. 1796 Moorings 22 Oct. 1796 Foulkes and the ASIA appear to have first been sworn in 1784, and this was now their 6th voyage for the Company..  You don't tell us the names of the brothers, but perhaps a name or two here might be familiar to you? 3. Hi Gill >From the few notes I've made for HMS Asia 1764-1804, it looks as though she was serving in the West Indies, during the early years of the Revolutionary War against France, which evolved into the Napoleonic Wars 1794-1800 : http://www.pbenyon.plus.com/18-1900/A/00352b.html but whether she was on that station all the time I can't confirm. Regret am unable to help with East Indiaman, although whilst a true East Indiamen sometimes called at ports on the Atlantic coast of South America whilst proceeding to and from the East Indies, I doubt they would normally operate in the West Indies, unless perhaps this was a vessel which had been hired by the War Department to carry troops and stores etc. in the West Indies, where many merchant vessels were used to provide support services to the Fleet and Army, when they made their various forays against French Islands in the West Indies as described here when the Fleet, including Asia, visited Martinique in 1794 : http://www.pbenyon.plus.com/Naval_History/Vol_I/P_216.html Some Islands exchanged hands several times over the 20 years of war, which covered the period 1793-1815, less a year or two circa 1801-3, and 1814-15. Regarding the Asia, should you be interested some Captains' and Masters' Logs for HMS Asia survive, which detail where she went, often with other data, along with Muster and Pay Lists, which list the ship's company for Pay and Victualling purposes etc. A search of the London Gazette may also produce additional info with respect to what the Asia was doing during the period in question, eg as noted regarding the prize money paid in 1800.
