Hi Everyone, You may remember over the years I've tried on these esteemed pages to extract information on the above ship, that my great-grandfather Robert Henry Laws (1828-1891) commanded between 1873 and 1881. Last week my wife and I were watching a re-run of BBC's Bargain Hunt and when Tim Wannacott was talking to the Auctioneer at Goldings Auction Rooms of Market Harborough in Northamptonshire I spotted the portrait of this ship (painted by Frederick Tudjay in 1872) that I last saw hanging on the wall in my Great Aunts house at Fowey in Cornwall. When I was there after her death (I was executor to her estate) it was glaringly missing. We always thought it had been removed by her son, from whom she was estranged, he did not attend the funeral, and sadly both he and his wife have since died. The programme was first screened November 2012, I have been in touch with both the BBC and with the Auction Rooms without success. Can anyone advise how I go forward in recovering it to the Laws Family where it belongs. I hope this is not against policy, but I have a (non-collectable but Ok) copy of "Queens of the Western Ocean" by Carl C. Cutler I'd like to get rid of. I got it only to ID the part of Walt Whitman's poetry that refers to the rescue from the San Francisco by the Three Bells. As Whitman gives no names of ships or men, I'd have had to read his whole output! Not even the Bodleian has a copy. A subtitle of the book is "The story of America's mail and passenger sailing lines". It has illustrations (would it be good to make a note of these for the list?) and lists of ships belonging to different lines. The postage would be quite a lot, it's a heavy book. Please send private mail if you're interested. Clare Oxford UK
On the site of Spanish Libraries there is a Library that has a collection of the Spanish Lloyd's Gazette, from about 1861 to 1868, and also several Military & Naval gazettes. Hi Lisa A Capt Hamilton was in command of the Revenue Cutter Prince William Henry circa May 1806, per the "the Scots Magazine and Edinburgh Literary Miscellany," available in Google Books, when attending the funeral of the Duke of Argyll. And I note that there was an English Revenue Cutter named Hamilton in the 19th Century, if not 2, per King's Cutters and Smugglers 1700-1855, by E. Keble Chatterton : http://www.gutenberg.org/files/17563/17563-h/17563-h.htm There used to be an excellent web site that dealt with the various British Revenue Services, but I don't seem to be able to find it at the moment. Dear Peter, Paul and Peter, Thanks so much for your excellent help with this topic. Your three replies beautifully complemented each other and have allowed me to form a clear picture of which brother was on which Asia, and where! Although Peter Klein's list of some Asia Indiaman crew members didn't include my ancestor John Trounsell, remarkably it did include the witness to John's Will: Sur. Benjamin Johnson! Thanks all, Gill (Langley)
Hi all, I have a marriage certificate for my 4xgGrandfather from Wigtownshire, Scotland in 1795 that reads - John McWilliam, Mariner, in the ?Border? Revenue Cutter Capt Hamilton and Grissal Kelly daughter to John Kelly in South Milson? were legally proclaimed before the Congregation in order to marriage and no objections being made to the contrary they were accordingly married at Village by Mr Learmont? Twenty Sixth February 1795. I am trying to find more information on his occupation and wondering how to find out if Capt. Hamilton is the name of the vessel or the Captain of the ship? The document is a little difficult to read in places but I believe it is 'Border' Revenue Cutter. If anyone could help with information or any places to look for information that would be great - I would appreciate any information you can offer! Thanks, Lisa Wisniewski
