I know that all land property in the Plymouth Colony was owned by the Crown and held by the colonists in Freehold directly of the King (as opposed to through a Lord as was usually the case in England). I know that Freehold rights (land) could be sold or exchanged since my own early Plymouth ancestors did that. Was necessary to petition the Crown before selling land?
