    3. Hi, Merriel! Good morning, me again! More on the King Philip's War for these James. The WHITON genealogy on p. 21 tells about the now recognized WHITON progenitor/immigrant James/1 house burning in 1676 during the war. Anyways their source for this info was the Rev. Peter Hobart's Diary. I believe??? some of this diary has been transcribed or published somewhere by someone??? Hopefully someone lurking has more info on this diary. This diary has been used extensively for Hingham records. The WHITON section of Lincoln's History of Hingham, III:289, does tell about James/1 house burning on 20 Apr 1676 but gives no military info on James/2 (III:289) or James/3 (III:290). Page 23 in the WHITON genealogy has who is now recognized as James/2 military info and p. 27 James/3 info. Like we chatted via E-mail I also agree it is impossible for James/3 born in 1676 to have been in that war and that I suspect it is one of the multitude of errors in this genealogy. Nowwwww here is something of interest. On p. 222 it lists the WHITON men who served in various wars. Under the Indian and Colonial Wars it lists only 2 James: James (2) and James (3). Now today with a Thomas being debunked as the WHITON progenitor/immigrant (NEHGR 123:228), this makes the book's James/2 now James/1 and James/3 now James/2 and James/4 now James/3. Soooooooo the genealogy only found evidence of 2 James - not 3. Why they included that bit under the 3rd James about losing his arm, etc... is in error. That info either belongs with one of the other James or he lost his arm, etc... during a later Indian War. Here is a King Philip's site that might???? have help for you: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/topic/newengland/philip/ I don't know if it has a surname index. --- Susan SGTAYLOR1@att.net My Genealogy Website - sgt http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/ ----------------------------------------------- USGW Mansfield, CT - http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctcmansf/ USGW New London, CT - http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctcnewlo/ USGW Norwich, CT - http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctcnorwi/ USGW Windham, CT - http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctcwindh/ USGW Coordinator Plymouth Co., MA - http://www.rootsweb.com/~maplymou/ USGW Plymouth, MA - http://www.rootsweb.com/~macplymo/ ********************************************************* At 07:23 AM 2/18/03 -0500, you wrote: >I’ve meant to ask this question for some time, and now that the Rickards >have >appeared on this list, I’ll try to pose the question which is regarding >veterans of King Phillip’s War. >The Whiton Family in America genealogy by Augustus Sherrill Whiton (which >like all genealogies has errors) states that James Whiton, baptized in Hook >Norton, England in 1624, had his home burned by the Indians in 1676, led by >Chief Philip of the Pokanoket Tribe, to meet the attacks of whom the men >residents of Hingham were impressed into service. >The above James Whiton had a son James, baptized 1651, who married Abigail >Rickard and the genealogy states he also served in King Philip’s War. >Then James Whiton and Abigail had ten children, including a son James; thus >making three generations of James Whitons.
