Most of the article looks pretty sound with McCracken not hesitating in listing his sources; however, there are a couple of glaring errors on in-law families. The error that comes to mind are the parents of Esther BARNES who md. John/2 RICKARD. McCracken, NEHGR 111:172 says her father and mother were Jonathan/2 and Elizabeth (HEDGE) BARNES with John/1 her grandfather. This is in error for Jonathan/2 and Elizabeth didn't marry until 1665/66 and Esther md. John RICKARD in 1651. Esther was a sister of Jonathan/2 - not his daughter. Davis' Ancient Landmarks of Plymouth says John/1 BARNES was father of Esther (BARNES) RICKARD. Anyways, you asked Bill where the DOB (1596) of Giles/1 came from. I have 1597 for his DOB per Torrey, p. 624. I know this would make him about 3 yrs. younger than Judith COGAN. As Giles was Judith's 2nd husband, this difference in age doesn't bother me. I have per the NEHGR COGAN article Judith baptized 1594 and per that article and Torrey she married 1st to Wm. King in 1618. He died c1619 and she and md. Giles in 1624 making her 30 and Giles (if DOB 1597) 27. Hmmmm...... 27 yrs. of age is getting a bit late for the 1st marriage back then. As to Sarah RIKARD, a dau of Giles/1 and Judith, I agree with you and Bill that at this point she is very iffy. Both Savage and Davis' Ancient Landmarks of Plymouth, like the NEHGR article, make a point of saying they aren't sure about her and her marriage to George PADDOCK. Savage gives a DOM for Sarah and George of 1657. Torrey has no entry for this marriage. Soooo at this point I have a surety of only 1 for Sarah in my db. Again thank you for replying via the list with the COGAN article as a source. I love it when people reply via the list rather than just private mail for it makes the list so much more interesting!
