(She was the dauof Eliazar & Hannah Jacson, b. { } Oct. 1702 <the date has been altered from 1 Nov. to an illegible day of Oct.> - VR:32) I decided to check surrounding towns and instinctively went to Plympton first (don't know why) and found them there. They married at Plympton, 29 Nov. 1723 <VR:278>. There are no children listed for them in Plymouth or Plympton, but I'm sure if you check surrounding towns you will come across them. Susan E. One of my ongoing projects is the conversion of public-domain vital records volumes into web pages. Now that Brockton has a USGenWeb page I'd like to put online what I've completed (about 25%) of "Vital Records of Brockton, Massachusetts, to the Year 1850." What I've completed covers mainly the Edson, Packard, Perkins and Washburn families. Before these pages go "public" I'd like to have a few folks proofread them. I have split the work into seperate sections for births, marriages and deaths for those who are willing to work on part of the project. Images of the pages (in GIF format for viewing with a browser) are available so proofreaders won't need the book or CD, and both images and HTML are packaged in ZIP files for downloading and offline proofreading. I hope to finish scanning and converting the rest of the volume over the next few months. If you would like to help with the proofreading please let me know. I will, of course, acknowledge all volunteers prominently on the top page of the VRs. Dale H. I am not disputing what you say, but only suggesting that some other points be balanced with what you have said. Perhaps we should try to put ourselves in the place of the taxpayers in these communities, and of the people trying to run the office. It takes time to do lookups whether or not the search is successful. Someone needs to pay for that employee's time. Why should the people of Brockton have to support the hobby of someone on the other side of the country? Or for that matter support the hobby of someone from Brockton? As to using the books, there are issues of damage, traffic control in the office, and even theft as well as others. A town clerk's office is not a public library. We, of all people, should be conscious of what it is like when public records are lost to future generations. My experience with town clerks in MA has been positive, but I have not had experience with Brockton. Perhaps they are difficult to deal with--you know better than I. But the "problems" which you did mention--and I realize there may be others--do not seem "terrible" to me--they seem like a municipality's effort to control costs which are going to come out of the taxpayer's pockets, and that, it seems to me, is part of their job. I am sure you never abuse the system, but believe me, I know that when a government agency offers free services, some people will exploit the system, and since one never knows who it's going to be, there have to be rules for all.
Hi Pam, Thank you for your suggestions and for validating my feelings! I guess I'm very lucky--in my little county in West Virginia, where I am a lookup volunteer, I can have complete access to the records. So I was a little surprised at Brockton's policies. But I will take your advice and try the Archives and Vital Statistics. I appreciate everyone who took the time to answer my question. Thanks again, Jolynn Pam <pam259@attbi.com> wrote: I hate to put anyone/place down..but it is true...Brockton is terrible to deal with! If anyone could shed some light on this for me, I would appreciate it. I have sent directly to the City Clerk of Brockton for copies of records. They charge five dollars a search, and usually make a very nice document for records that are very old (those that are just recorded in record books and have no certificate). On the down side, their searches are not very consistent. When I sent for a death record for my great-grandmother Nellie Ryan Gibbons (who died in 1950), I was told there was no record on file. Two years later, I sent for a marriage record for Nellie and her husband John Gibbons. I w! as! told there was no record on file for the marriage, but was sent Nellie's death certificate--the one that I was told two years earlier did not exist. This happened again when I sent for a birth record and was told that they had two different ones on file and asked which one I wanted. When I replied that I wanted both (and sent more funds for such), my money was returned with a letter stating that they were not on file!! Has anyone else had this kind of expreience with Brockton? I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks, Jolynn Noel Winland --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! I think you would be better to send for documents from the Mass Archives (1843-1910) or the Vital Statistics office for records after 1910 Pam ----- Original Message ----- From: jolynn winland To: MAPLYMOU-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, July 20, 2002 4:12 PM Subject: [PLY/MA] Re: MAPLYMOU-D Digest V02 #86 I would like to express relief at the defeat of MAH5158. At times everyone has problems obtaining records from any records holding facility. I've heard of other places that are worst. Remember the $5.00 is a "research fee" not a document fee. In Oklahoma Birth Searches are $5.00 and Death Searches are $10.00 with or without results. Sometimes writing back to the Director works, sending a copy of an obit or funeral record helps with the death record request. Fred Frederick M. The following was sent to me and requested that I put on the Plymouth page. A similar bill was defeated here in Oklahoma due to the large volume of mail received at the Capitol mainly from Genealogist. Please contact your State Represenative about the bill. Even if you don't live in Plymouth or Massachusetts please contact the Represenative for the district of your interest or any district. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Hello The Massachusets Genealogical Council (MGC) board http://massgencouncil.home.attbi.com/index.htm held an emergency meeting this evening in Waltham MA to review the text of an alarming, and recently introduced, Massachusetts House of Representatives bill H5158 (see links below for issues, status and contact information). The most pressing aspect of H5158, on preliminary review, is that it would close marriage and death records since 1950, as well as birth records after 1910, to public access - including their indicies! MGC is recommending that all Massachusetts residents contact their Representative and that all non-resident Massachusetts researchers contact a Massachusetts resident to represent their interests - immediately as the formal sessions close on July 31st - but impromptu sessions have sometimes been used to pass such legislation! ( see http://www.state.ma.us/legis/repdis01.htm for districts) The general content of the legislative protest letters should at least cover the following points, be sincere, personalized and not appear in a form letter format: ==================================================================== Dear (Representative Name): The Birth, Marriage and Death records (Vital Records) of the Commonwealth have always been open to the public with few specific exceptions. House Bill 5158, currently reported out to the Committee on House Rules, would close Birth Records after 1910 and Marriage and Death Records since 1950 to public access. We ask that you encourage further study of this Bill by the Committee on House Rules and that you vote AGAINST this bill should it come to floor vote. H5158 would affect every citizen of the Commonwealth. Among other things it would: 1) block access to recent death records so that family medical histories could not be ascertained; 2) increase expenses for persons needing to prove legitimate access to the Vital Records; 3) not affect the risks of identity fraud or theft which does not occur from personal inspection of the Vital Records. Again I/we urge you to defeat H5158.
