We are leaving on a trip soon and When I try to check mail from remote locations it is difficult to wander through all the spam that has piled up. Will be looking for emergency messages from my kids. I'll let you know when we are back in the saddle. Thanks and keep up the good work. Carolyn Remember, you have a friend in Oklahoma!

    1. [PLY/MA] "History of Bridgewater" Transcription Continues
    2. Dale H Cook
    3. It is my sad honor to succeed the late CJ McNew as webmaster of her Bridgewater, Hingham and Marshfield USGenWeb sites. One resource I have used frequently in recent years is her posting of Nahum Mitchell's "History of Bridgewater." I have resumed the ongoing process of converting the scans of Mitchell into HTML pages. One change that I am making is to reformat the already transcribed pages into a format that resembles the pages in the book. If you would like to have a look, the gateway page for Mitchell is at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mabridge/mitchell/contents.html Follow the link to the resident families index and you can see the new format used for the Ames and Orcutt families. Please let me know what you think of the new format. I am especially interested in obtaining scans of pages for (mostly small) families that, in the residents' index, are marked with a black N, indicating that no scan for that family was ever posted. As I work on converting the already transcribed pages into the new format I'll be asking here if anyone has scans of certain families that I will need for reformatting and proofreading. Fran Ames has already provided me with some of the scans I need, and between those and my photocopies I have most of the major Bridgewater families. Dale H. 2. Hi Pat, The 1900 Federal Cenus asks the question regarding Year of Immigration, Number of Years in the United States and if the person was Naturalized. If you feel the births took place in the Town of Plymouth, Plymouth County, MA try asking the Library volunteers to check the Town Reports for those years. Some of the years listed the births and parents in the annual report. I do not know what year they stopped due to privacy issues. I did a search using [Plymouth Library Plymouth MA] in the search field but when I wrote down the URL and entered it, it did not connect. However, if you do a search the link from the listing for Lookups should work. Perhaps a better computer user will answer with a link in their response that will connect you. The Massachusetts Vital Records index lists surname, given name (if child was named at registration time), sex, date span and County. But I do not remember if that is the exact order. Massachusetts Archives might have these dates on microfilm now. The Archives are in Boston (Suffolk County) and I would post an inquiry to the Massachusetts general board asking for someone who uses the microfilm regularly if they could take a look for you. If you are not sure the county is Plymouth and the surname is not a common one it should be easy to check. If one of the common New England names it would be more time consuming without the knowing the county. These microfilm are also at the New England Historic Genealogical Society and perhaps someone would see the request who researches there on a regular basis. Barbara in Portland, OR

Male, able-bodied, between 16 and 60. These were people on the edge of a wilderness they often believed to be populated with dangerous enemies, exposed to attack from the sea, and not inclined to be overly punctilious about social status when it was a question of defense. The able to bear arms list is therefore almost a comlete listing of the adult male population.

    3. Hi rooters! Can someone tell me what census has the year of immigration on it? Also, if I have names & dates of birth for several children born between 1900-06, what is the best way for me to go about finding out who the parents were? All were born in MA. Pat Marshall Ontario, Canada

    3. I have an ancestor on an early Plymouth “Able to Bear Arms” listing. What was the qualification of being included on the list? Under 17th century English law only a Freeman (freeholder) or above that class had a right to bear arms (i.e. could possess and carry arms by right). All others required permission. I’m curious as to whether the listings represent men of Freeman class? Bill Churchill USA

But for the sake of my blood pressure we won't pursue that. Love your email--what would the male version be? Senile_curmudgeon would work pretty well for me, but it's a bit long.

    3. Hi all, I am a new subscriber to this list, although certainly not new to rootsweb! I would like to know if anyone has access to the 1900, 1910 & 1920 census for Bridgewater, MA and if so could they please check for a Frederick A. KEHOE (KEHO, KEOUGH)... wife's name was Lestina Meara (Cope;and) McNeeland (widow of William McNeeland) born Bridgewater 21 Jan 1862 in Bridgewater. I presume they were married there as well. He was born in Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia but at some point went to Bridgewater, MA. He was there in 1903 when his first child, Amelia was born and in 1904, when son George Frederick was born. It is also rumoured that Frederick A. Kehoe was a member of the U.S. Navy. Anyone know how I would go about checking that fact? Id anyone can enlighten me more on Frederick A. Kehoe & family I would be absolutely delighted. I have the British Vital Records Index, Volume 2 (BVRI 2) as well as both the British & Canadian 1881 census and am more than willing to do lookups in any of them for anyone! 1. [PLY/MA] Anti-Spam Measure on Query page
    2. Dale H Cook
    3. For those of you concerned about posting your email address on a website where a spam spider might find it, I have implemented an anti-spam measure on my query pages. It was inspired by USGenWeb Plymouth County Coordinator Susan G. Taylor. She uses a graphic of her email address on her pages in place of a mailto link, since such links are the primary goals of the spiders. I am now using graphics for the email addresses of those posting queries to my USGenWeb town pages. This keeps machine-readable addresses completely off of my RootsWeb pages. Mine is the only address posted on those sites with a mailto link, and I use a special account with multiple spam filters for those postings. For an example see: http://www.rootsweb.com/~macbrock/queries.html Click on one of the emails to see a magnified version for those who have trouble reading the graphics. All of my Rootsweb and Angelfire pages can always be reached from my master page at: http://www.angelfire.com/ma4/oldcolony/index.html Dale H.
