I am looking for any internet site having vital records for Brockton in the 1930s. Does anybody know of one? Looking for the marriage of Marion Grippen to Frank Regan probably in 1932. John E. Rowe
This notice is from the NGS Newsletter. NGS Circulating Collection :-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-: An anonymous donor has made a very large donation to the NGS Circulating Collection, now housed at the St. Louis County Library in Missouri. The donation of about 1500 volumes ranks as one of the two largest ever received by NGS. All of these books will be available via Interlibrary Loan to any interested genealogical researcher. The list of titles is too long to publish at one time, but we have already begun to catalog the books and add them to our online library catalog. In addition, beginning with the January/February issue, future issues of the "NGS Newsmagazine" will list newly cataloged items from this donation until all of the titles have been published. I am trying to determine the origin of the Alice Martin who married George Clark at Plymouth in Jan 1638/39. She was said to be a kinswoman of my Plymouth progenitor John Churchill of Plymouth. All I’ve been able to find is a Martin family genealogy that names Alice’s father as Francis Martin of Saint Andrew, Plymouth, Devon, England with mother Prudence Deacon. This genealogy claims that this Francis Martin’s father was John Martin son of the Christopher Martin of Mayflower fame. The only Plymouth Colony Martin I have found in the 1639 to 1641 period is the Robert Martin who settled at Rehoboth, Plymouth colony. That Robert Martin was a follower of the Reverend Joseph Hull and was a member of Hull’s party to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1635. Robert appears to have departed Mass Bay for Plymouth at the same time that the Puritans ran the good Rev. Hull out. Alice can not be a daughter of this Robert Martin. Who was she? I am at a loss. I have searched Plymouth reference works and find no mentions of other Plymouth Colony Martins. Am I missing them? Were there other Martins at Plymouth circa 1640? Any help will be appreciated. Regards, Bill Churchill
Hi Bob, Below I have entered some information from the Scituate VR which looks as though it might be your line--certainly the later generations seem to be and from there you can probably find ways to check. I don't know anything at all about this family, but there's a book that people seem to refer to a lot and which I see is available in various forms from various places. I'm so confident that the Family History Library has it on microform that I didn't look it up, but that's probably the least expensive way to see it if your local library doesn't have it or can't get it on Interlibrary loan. I saw that Quintin Publications sells it on CD for a very low price--just over ten dollars, but I think there might be a wait. Other bookstores have it as a reprint for more, and the NEHGS version mentioned below is a reprint for about $40--more than other places and probably better quality. You might try the surname lists and boards--probably there's a Merritt out there who owns it and would do lookups and you could find out if it really would be helpful--I actually have no idea, I've just seen it cited a lot. Hello ! have found that my 6th great grandfather, Thomas Sargent, who migrated to Boston, MA from Scituate, MA had a brother, Thaddeus Sargent who married a Susannah(Hannah.Anna) Merret/Merrit in Boston on July 26, 1722 Might this Susannah belong to your Merrit family here? My Sargents have strong ties to Scituate before they moved to Boston and are mentioned in Vital Records of Scituate, MA, pre 1700. Thaddeus and Susannah were at the North Church I believe. I have a copy of the marriage index record. The rest of my Sargents show up at the North church in Boston, and later at the South Church abt 1765, after it split from the North Church. Can anyone help? Did Susannah and Thaddeus(might have been actually called Edward) have children? Who were Susannah's parents? how do the Merrets/Merrits tie into my Sargent family? From your first message I think you probabaly know all this already, but the people you mentioned do appear in some of the sources I have on hand. Your Elkanah, if I have these people straight and my source is correct, is the son of Daniel and Prudence (Parker) Steward. According to a Register article of 1958, "Robert Parker of Barnstable, Mass.," (see pp 197: 198-9) Elkanah was the fourth child of Daniel Steward and Prudence Parker (marriage, MD 34:117, "Barnstable Mass, Vital Records"), and was born in Hardwick, Worcester, MA 12 Aug., 1737 and married Lydia Cobb 7 July, 1761. The younger children were born in Rochester, Plymouth, MA. Daniel was the son of James Steward and Sarah Waite, and that James is the son of a Daniel, who, as far as I can tell, is the first of the line to be documented and is not, in the little I can find, thought to be connected to the James of the Fortune. But I'm not sure I have the right people or understand what the line really is. The Register article gives the date of birth of this Elkanah's father, Daniel, as 7 June, 1707. This is not the date you have, and in the Rochester VR (286) there is "Daniel, ch. Jams (Stuard), July 22, 1697." Actually one date seems to me a very little early and the other a very little late as the first child of the Daniel in the Register article is b. 1727. In any case, I don't understand, and I hope someone can clear up my confusion on this. There's also a James Steward who is mentioned in R. A. Lovell's _Sandwich: A Cape Cod Town_. He was a schoolmaster in 1686 (p. 109) and that's about all there is on him, but I think he's the same James who shows up in the Friends Meeting records. I have no idea how he fits in, if at all, and unfortunately I don't have the magnificent Sandwich VR anymore. I'm sorry I'm short of time now and haven't had time to look for more or try to sort out what I have found, but to answer the question you asked, yes, there are Stewards in the records and they appear to be the ones in whom you're interested.

I am trying to find new information on my Sarah Stuard/ Steward/Stewart who married Samuel Foster. Some say she was born about 1656 and married Samuel Foster about 1676 in Salem, MA. I have not seen anywhere anything new about her or her parentage and as there have been many inquiries about the Stuard surname and various individuals, I wanted you all to know that I am seriously looking for her parents...and siblings..does anyone have this connection or genealogy or any ideas as to where to find more on her..there was also a Mary Stuard in the same timeframe that married a John Foster I am also wondering if they were perhaps sisters as well. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? DearList: Ever wonder WHAT church your ancestor was married or baptised in in England (when your source only says the parish of town or city)? Try the following URL to probably ID the actual name. (I have left it at Warwickshire, but the GENUKI site covers all of England on many subjects.) http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/WAR/images/ Regards, Eugene Hubbard
Hello Listers: My interest in Hull, Plymouth, MA. is concerned with the parents and siblings of the following: 1. SMALLAGE, Zachariah, b. 1695 in Hull, Plymouth, MA. 2. GREEN, Elizabeth, b. 24 Aug 1696 in Hull, Plymouth, MA. They were married 08 Nov 1718 in Hull, Plymouth, MA. 3. SMALLAGE, Benjamin, b. 1690 in Boston, Suffolk, MA. 4. m. 1 Mary GAINS, b. Are there any other searchers on this list with similar interests? Where would records be available for research? Point of contact? The SMALLAGE surname has been spelled several different ways but at that time apparently as above. Thank you for any information or leads in locating confirming information on dates, names, and relationships. Are Zachariah & Benjamin possibly brothers, even tho some records show them born in different towns? Regards, Jane Smallidge Dover, NH.

Dear List: For those who are interested in breaking new ground by tracing their immigrant ancestors in 16th/17th century (1500's/1600's) Great Britain, I recommend visiting the following site: http://www.rod-neep.co.uk/ For instance, one can get CD's on the Harleian papers, and on the visitations to the various shires (among over a 1000 CD's to date). One important CD titled "East Anglian Pedigrees" covers people from multilple shires not generally traced in popular materials. A plus factor for this site is that it uses secure transmission for payment information. 'Gene Hubbard
