Susan, Thank you for the information. It is quite helpful. I research English Churchill families so I am familiar with the Ottery Saint Mary registers. I discovered Robert while researching Devon Rockbeare Churchills. Robert was a follower of the Rev. Joseph Hull an Anglican non-conformist of the type that later became Congregationalists. I've been trying to put together Robert's family group from Martin researchers on the Martin List but have received conflicting information. I agree when you say many early Martin sources are mixed up. After receiving your message I checked the LDS (IGI M002761) batch file (this is the real parish register listing without all the "submitter" trash) and found a baptism record for your John son of Richard bp 1653. It says he was baptised 20 JAN 1653 and lists his parents as Richard "Martyn" with mother "Eliza." Thank you, I had no way of knowing this was the Rehoboth Richard. I did not find a baptism for the daughter c.1649 but did find several Annis, Anne & Agnes -- those were common female names among OSM Martins. It turns out that the IGI is not complete for OSM so this may be why there is no listing for your Ann/Agnes. Martin List researchers do have conflicting information. Some have Richard with wife Elizabeth Salter and 2nd married to Judith Upham the younger sister of Robert's wife Johanna. The LDS IGI (the real IGI) for OSM has quite a number of Martins but no one I recognize as Robert and no Johanna Upham -- or any Uphams for that matter. I checked the Batcombe, Somerset registers and did not find Robert -- and no other Martins save a single Christopher Martin. However, church registration only started late in the 16th century so Robert's age is pushing a bit the time for registries. Questions: Do you know if there is will/probate for Richard? Do you have background information on Richard Martin? From what I have learned he certainly wasn't in any hurry to assume his brother's Rehoboth freehold. Devon records suggest he had something to do with maritime shipping or commerce -- ship's officer, owner's agent, owner or part owner. One record suggests he captained the bark Blessing. Which class of gentry was Richard? His first marriage 1681 in Rehoboth was to Mercy/3 BILLINGTON and second marriage 1719 Rehoboth to Abigail READ. These are the only issue I have for them at this time. Richard was not only brother of Robert but of Abraham too. The CHAFFEE genealogy says on p. 21, in "book two of the Rehoboth Land Records... Richard Martin acknowledged having given to his son-in-law, Joseph Chaffee, 'ffourteen pounds estate in commonage,' in Rehoboth, which was given him by the will of his brother, Robert Martin." and Torrey, p. 492, says Richard was brother of Abraham. Probably the only sure source of issue for Richard and Elizabeth (SALTER) MARTIN are the church registries of Ottery St. Mary's Church, Devonshire, England. Any children for them would have had to be born before they immigrated because they were probably in their 50 and 60s. The LDS/FHC probably have the church registries on microfilm. You really have to be careful in any data/research done on any early New England Richard MARTIN for there were several Richard MARTIN progenitor/immigrants. Many many early sources have really mixed up on their Richard info by crediting info to the wrong Richards.

I would like to know if anyone has any information about the following CLARKE/CLARK family of Middleboro (abt 1880s). My great-grandfather, Gilbert Tripp CLARKE, did not like to talk about where he was from. On a recent trip to RI, I obtained his death certificate from the North Kingstown Town Hall and found out the following: Name: Gilbert T. CLARKE Date of Birth: October 27, 1882 Father's Name: Okes CLARKE Father's Birthplace: Middleboro, MA Mother's Name: Ellen PAUN Mother's Birthplace: Middleboro, MA Date of Death: March 29, 1954 Then, from the 1880 Federal Census (Lakeville, Plymouth, MA), I found an Oakes A.J. (b. ~1846) and Ellen A. CLARK (b. ~1844)(whose maiden name was PAREN, they lived with her mother, Sarah PAREN (b. ~1801)) and two children, Willard O. CLARK (b. ~1871) and Earnest W. CLARK (b. ~1873). I found a Gilbert CLARKE in the 1900 Rhode Island Federal Census (Providence, RI) age 18, born in May 1882. The Middleboro Public Library told me there was a Gilbert CLARK in the Middleboro Town Records, but did not elaborate other than to say that the 'E' was not on his name in the record. I had intended to travel to Middleboro during my last trip, but time ran out. If anyone has any information about this CLARKE/CLARK family, please let me know. Thanks, Stephanie P.S. Does anyone know the cost of obtaining a copy of birth certificates from the Middleboro Town Clerk?

"... so for what I paid for two one can now get all of them. I die a little whenever someone does this, but..." I had to sigh when I read those words. I think I was the last person to pay the full, high price for those CD ROMS. The day after I ordered them at $99, I saw one of the disks for $39. Well, they were still a good buy. I must say, though, that of those I have purchased (Middlesex, Essex, Plymouth, Suffolk), I find Plymouth the hardest to use. Kendall Mellem
Hi Dale, Yes, it does contain images of the pages from the tan series books which are out of copyright. It does not contain the newer VRs such as the Plymouth Twp. book, but instead has Bowman's Plymouth Twp. VR from MD. Those VR which use MD are presented in text and image form so those are searchable by word whereas the images from the tan series use the index of the book itself. In my opinion these S&R CDs are a very good buy. As you probably know, the bundle of all the MA VR CDs from S&R is available for about half the combined price of the CDs sold separately. If you anticipate also getting into Barnstable, Bristol, and Norfolk you could buy the whole commonwealth set for the price of those four separately. This offer was not available when I bought mine--in fact the individual prices were twice what they are now when I bought mine, so for what I paid for two one can now get all of them. I die a little whenever someone does this, but... I imagine you already have Brockton, Bridgewater, etc., but the CD has Bridgewater in the NEHGS series as well as every word searchable from MD, East Bridgewater and West Bridgewater and Brockton from the NEHGS series. ***-----Original Message----- ***From: Dale H Cook [mailto:radiotest@juno.com] ***Sent: Saturday, January 04, 2003 6:51 AM ***To: MAPLYMOU-L@rootsweb.com ***Subject: [PLY/MA] Search & ReSearch Plymouth VRs CD *** *** ***Do any of you own the Search & ReSearch CD-ROM "Early Vital Records of ***the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to about 1850" for Plymouth County? In the 1900 census Otis Longfellow is a widow with his 5 daughters in Scituate. His wife was Annie (S. ?) Lauer b. in Illinois, her parents were both born in Germany. I would like to find out more information about her. The last 3 children were born in Massachusetts, the last being April of 1896 so she died between then & 1900. He continued to live in Scituate. Any information about Annie would be very helpful and much appreciated. ~ Thanks

My question is are the children of Metacom known other than the one son who was sent to Burmuda with his mother as a slave? TIA Richard F. In late 1719, EPHRAIM ELSBERRY was a servant under indenture to Thomas Rogers & Capt. Thomas Barker of Marshfield. In the Plymouth County Courts, in 1720 Ephraim Elsberry was convicted of receiving cash which had been stolen from John Jones Sr by Rogers' servant Kingston. Ephraim was fined double damages for the cash he had received from Kingston. In addition, his indenture was extended by 5 years beyond the indenture's original expiration (not given in the court record). EPHRAIM ELSBERRY subsequently removed to Freetown MA, where he married Mary Boomer, d. Matthew Boomer II, ca 1727. Ephraim Elsberry is one of my brick walls. Searching for any information on Mary - child of Nathaniel THOMAS and Mary APPLETON. Mary was supposedly born early 1700's (1705-1709). I have one source that states she died early (1714) and another that states she lived to marry Joseph PEPOON in Colchester CT (1725). Thank you. Paul Vogel Mankato, MN 56001
