    3. Coralynn Brown has just completed the transcription of "Bridgewater In The Rebellion" by Arthur HOOPER, 1880, which provides a list of the Bridgewater men who served in Civil War regiments. Because of the length of the book, the file has been divided into two parts. You'll find it at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jdevlin/index.htm Look under What's New or in the section on Plymouth Co. 3. Eugene, Good discussion, I haven't been able to jump in until now. You are correct - Hannah4 Howland, dau of John3 Howland (John2-1) & Joanna Shove married at Barnstable, 28 Dec. 1732, John Allen not John Fuller. This appears to be based on the fact that John & Hannah Allen named a son "Shove" and that Hannah4 appears to be married in the 1738 will of her father, John3 Howland (although her surname was not given). This marriage is accepted by the society and is found in the Howland 5 generation book, vol. 2. John & Hannah Allen are credited with 2 children, Shove & John - nothing further is known about John, and Shove m. Mary Proctor with no further record, therefore neither of these lines are carried further. As for the marriages of John3 Howland, these were confused in print for many years - Bowman in Mayflower Marriages thought first wife was possibly Abigail Crocker - this error should be noted in our copies and Joanna Shove should replace Abigail Crocker on pg.228. Proof of the Shove marriage was found in a deed dated 20 May 1714 whereby "John Howland acquired land that was "due Joannah, wife of John Howland, whose maiden name was Shove" <North Purchase Proprietors Recs.1:57 as cited in Howland 2:40>. 3. I've really got to fold on this matter...I'm making too many typos.. The person first mentioned as 2nd John Howland should be 3rd John Howland. 3rd John's birth was misqoted from Roser (not Rosier) and should have been 31 Dec 1674. (not 30 Sept. 1672). Sorry, 'Gene Hubbard

    3. Dear Susan and List: OK, Good discussion... It has prompted me to search the Internet for Joanna Shove. I got a very good documented hit right away. The owner of the information has done a thorough job, althought the proper attribution for the marriage of 2nd John Howland to Joanna Shove should read 2nd edition (not 2nd volume) of Mayflower Increasings by Susan E, Rosier. To quote the paragraph by Roser, found on p.71 of IBID, "10. John HOWLAND^3, b. 30 Sept. 1672, Barnstable <MD 5:75>; MSR 613>, d. 14 Feb. 1737/8, 63rd yr, Barnstable g.s. <MD 45:159 (Memorial Insciptions W. The numbers in parentheses refer to listed references. I have things right thru daughter Hannah, whose mother was Joanna Shove (whose mg I cited with improper attributions). Acc. to published records, Hannah's husband was James Fuller of whom nothing further. We then have to address why the Hannah, who married John Allen would have named a son Shove, as did George Gill Howland, a stated son of 3rd John Howland and unlisted wife (acc. to William T. Davis.).... 3rd John Howland married (2nd) Mary Crocker. He did not marry Abigail Crocker at all..neither Davis nor Rosier mentions it. Author Franklyn Howland had to have guessed at the name of 3rd John's 1st wife.... One Abigail Crocker married George Gill Howland, mentioned above. She was the dau. of John Crocker and Hannah (???), b. 1706. I propose once again that Hannah (Howland) Allen was the daughter of Joanna Shove and 3rd John Howland, he the son of 2nd John Howland and Mary Lee... 3. Hi Eugene, et al! I really have no answer for you on your Hannah HOWLAND hunt but do have a bit of info on the Hannah, b. 1708 to John HOWLAND. According to: Franklyn Howland, A Brief Genealogical and Biographical History of Arthur, Henry, and John Howland, and Their Descendants, of the United States and Canada, together with an account of the efforts made in England to learn of their English ancestry, etc (Microfiche of First Edition (1885); Sanford, NC: Microfilming Corp. of America, 1979) in custody of the Memphis Public Library, p. 331. This Hannah was the dau. of John/3 who md/1 Abigail Crocker and md/2 in 1719 Mary Crocker. No mention of a wife Joanna SHOVE. >doesn't seem to be another candidate other than for Hannah b. 2 Feb 1708, >per my examination of William T. Davis's entries in 'Genealogical Register >of Plymouth Families' p.151. He cites Hannah, dau. of John and Joanna >(Shove) Howland b. 1708. Hmmmm.... my copy: William T. Davis, Ancient Landmarks of Plymouth. Part I. Historical Sketch & Titles of Estates. Part II. Genealogical Register of Plymouth Families (Boston: William T. Davis, 1883), Part II, p. 151. Also viewed on-line: http://www.rootsweb.com/~macplymo/plyalpgr_h2.html#howland Mentions no wife named SHOVE for him. It doesn't give a name for his 1st wife and says 2nd wife was Mary Crocker. In fact Davis has no John HOWLAND married to any Joanne SHOVE. Also: Leon Clark Hills, History and Genealogy of the Mayflower Planters to Ye Olde Colonie, Two Volumes in One (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc, 1975), p. 164. Only lists wives of Abigail and Mary CROCKER for this John HOWLAND. Anyhow, the published HOWLAND genealogy says this Hannah was "b. 2, 2, 1708" and "d. 1738, unmarried." Soooo according to this genealogy she didn't marry. Nowwwww Davis and Howland genealogy (both very out-dated sources) and MFPlanters are suspect sources at best. It would probably behoove you to check out the Mayflower publications on HOWLAND: White, Elizabeth, John Howland of the Mayflower, Vols. I & II by Picton Press http://www.mayflower.org/book.htm I suspect a good size public library might have it. --- Susan SGTAYLOR1@att.net My Genealogy Website - sgt http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/ ----------------------------------------------- USGW Mansfield, CT - http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctcmansf/ USGW New London, CT - http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctcnewlo/ USGW Norwich, CT - http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctcnorwi/ USGW Windham, CT - http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctcwindh/ USGW Coordinator Plymouth Co., MA - http://www.rootsweb.com/~maplymou/ USGW Plymouth, MA - http://www.rootsweb.com/~macplymo/ ********************************************************* At 01:55 PM 5/22/03 -0400, Eugene Hubbard wrote: >I have left the earlier messages intact to permit a reader >to follow the discussion. > >Dear Dale and Lists: > >My message was to suggest the connections in order to get a >discussion going. 3. I have left the earlier messages intact to permit a reader to follow the discussion. Dear Dale and Lists: My message was to suggest the connections in order to get a discussion going. I found none in writing by a recognized source. :-) I will give you the Fuller marriage as more - questionable..but one James was b. 27 Feb 1704 and there doesn't seem to be another candidate other than for Hannah b. 2 Feb 1708, per my examination of William T. Davis's entries in 'Genealogical Register of Plymouth Families' p.151. He cites Hannah, dau. of John and Joanna (Shove) Howland b. 1708. I feel most-comfortable with my suggestion that this Hannah was the wife of John Allen per her havin named a child Shove. You are right in that Bowman did not assign Hannah to any parents at the time of her marriage. That was an incorrect attribution on my part. In fact, I believe Bowman only transcribed town records, he did not make genealogies out of the information, so I don't think that is a drawback to my proposition. 'Gene Dale H. 3. One Hannah Howland married James Fuller (banns 21 Nov 1731 in the town of Barnstable) (see Dunkle's transcription of 'Early Vital Records of Barnstable, Dukes, & Nantucket Counties (from the Gustavus Adolphus Hinckley Collection)', ii:355, 357)). The Vital Records of Barnstable published in the Mayflower Descendant (34:18) says she was the daughter of John Howland and Joanna Shove. If she was indeed their daughter, she is certainly the Hannah Howland who married John Allen of Hingham (marriage banns in Barnstable 12 Nov 1732, marrige 28 Dec 1732.) (Ibid.) Hannah (???) was the wife of John Allen of Hingham, acc. to George Lincoln, ii:8 'The History of the Town of Hingham Massachusetts the Genealogies', and the mother of SHOVE Allen b. 28 Oct 1733. Hannah's son's name of "Shove" is the clue needed to attribute her to the appropriate parents. Hannah's brother George Gill Howland also had a son named Shove. I know of no reason why Bowman made the connection he did for the Hannah's Fuller marriage, and did not make the connection for her Allen marriage. Have I missed something? 'Gene Hubbard

    3. Thanks to Coralynn Brown, the Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., death records for the I to M surnames are now on line. Also, I have just uploaded a file with the names of those who joined the Middleboro, Plymouth Co., First Church between 1857 and 1895. The membership roll contains not only relationships, but also dates when members died or transferred to another church. I'll be working next on the earlier membership list that covers the period from 1694 to 1853. After the First Parish in Scituate a second parish was established in South Scituate. When South Scituate became the separate town of Norwell this church became the First Congregational of Norwell. It is now the First Unitarian of Norwell. This is possibly still the repository of the records of the original records of the Second Congregational of Scituate. To illustrate the early prevalence (sp?) of the Congo churchs - While in grad school in Cambridge (almost 50 yrs ag) I read in the newspapers of the burning (not arson) of a First Baptist Church in Boston. The building had started life as the 14th Congo of Boston! Brian Littlefield Ft. Wayne, IN

    3. I have just uploaded the New Plymouth births transcribed by Claire Dietz and the D-G surnames in the death records from Bridgewater, Coralynn Brown's on-going transcription project. I'd like to thank both of them for their extensive efforts. If anyone is looking for family in Essex Co., I just finished transcribing the Old Cemetery in Bedford, MA, and it is now on line. 3. Kendall, The cemetery you are referring to may be the "Men of Kent Cemetery". There is a monument in the cemetery that I believe has a list of names on it. For pictures go to www.21cent.net/scituate and hit the Men of Kent Cemetery link under Miscellaneous. This site also has many pictures of Scituate and a link to maps from the 1940's. For list of names, go to ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ma/plymouth/towns/scituate/cemeteries/meethse.txt Hope this helps. I am interested in whatever information there may be on the Eames family and those related to them by marriage in MARSHFIELD, Autobiography of a Pilgrim Town, to which you refer in your message of May 7. Do you know where I might find a copy. Who was the author and by whom and when was it published? >> Dear Member, Hope you don't mind my replying to the list as I think this may be of interest to others as well. I have two books: MARSHFIELD, A Town of Villages 1640-1990 by Krusell & Bates 1990 Anthony EAMES is listed in the index on six different pages, along with several others by that surname. Found this info on internet: Marshfield A Town of Villages 1640 - 1990, is available at local bookstores, including Jackansons in downtown Marshfield. It is also available from the authors at hramarshfield.home.att.net/marshfield_history.htm The price is $40.00 plus tax (Just a note, z-shops at Amazon.com list this as a rare book and priced at $447. I'd order it from the authors and ask them to autograph it!) You can read more about the book here: http://www.marshfield.net/History/intro.html MARSHFIELD, Autobiography of a Pilgrim Town, 1640-1940 (some water damage) Copyright by Marshfield Historical Commission 1977 "Being an Accounty of three hundred Years of a New England Town; founded by the Pilgrims; lived in and developed by the Royalists; adopted by Daniel Webster & beloved by many of the Ancestors of those who today make it their home. Published by Marshfield Tercentenary Committee, Marshfield, Massachusetts 1940" I have no idea if this book is still available from the Marshfield society, but there are some companies who specialize in re-publishing these old books. My copy is a hardback of about 373 pages, I've had it for many many years and it was damaged in 1988 when my cottage was flooded, but it is still readable and I'll be happy to check the index for your names if you are patient (Like my book I am old and slow!) and I am happy to tell you there are several references for EAMES.
